@fmbighair it's no coincidence that luther brought them to ur mind, he was actually one of the 1st to have that fast cadence with R&B, listen to "never to much", not as fast to us, but for them times, that was a really fast cadence for R&B, a style influenced by Bone thugs, Beyonce, and much more.
@benjamindollar04 thanks for the heads up, just checked out Never Gonna Be, idk, didn't really think it had a fast cadence even by 80's standards, not a real strong song either. There's not really a strong chorus but i DID love the guy doing roller disco in the video :) I actually think Luther's strong point is on the slower sweeter songs where he can sort of stretch his wings a bit.
That sample wasn't only used by positive k but also by Funky four plus 1 - Thats the joint and some other R&b song But my face lit when i heard the sample drop
Love the show man, big fan, love hip-hop. I did not expect the drum n bass history sample, 'nother favorite genre. Each episode's samples blow me away. Keep it up.
yo you gotta keep making these i look forward to your top tens everyday, especially because i am an up and coming rapper on a new label thats is to be released later this year (731 records) , and you have gave me quite the variety of samples and tuned my ear to a lot of the old school tracks and classics and now my love for music has tripled so thanks and if you can lemme know the song that dr.dre and eminem sampled off of the song title is kill you eminem
NICE!!! Coca Bottle Baby by Edwin Birdsong!!!, without that Daft Punk would have never produced Harder Better Faster Stronger (which son a Grammy [Alive 2007 Version]) and in turn Kanye would have never produced Stronger (which also won a Grammy). Cool how so much can come out of one song. Great Vids man.
@funktuall Great point, and I've wondered that myself. Not just Edwin Birdsong but every single artist who has ever been sampled. I've not always know that music had these "samples". My interest for what songs used samples was actually from "Stronger" after my friend showed me Daft Punk's record and heard what was being sampled. It made me think of what other great artists were left "forgotten". Certainly an issue that should be discussed amongst the many award shows out there.
@funktuall Yet, it could be said that it is a good thing that either the origional artist or record company gets royalties for the sample. Also, most of the artists do put what is being sampled in their booklets.
It's "so rare" and amazing when someone gets to take their passion and have a platform and audience to share it with. I hope you enjoy making these videos as much as we enjoy watching them. Much love brother.
Gotta love when a clearly East Coast cat gives it up for Above the Law...wait I think that was the last edition...I'm a fan of this series...helping me get through the work day
Awesome vid as always funktuall however I need to say the "amen" break is used like crazy in Jungle, not so much DnB (although lots of drum n bass tracks have used it too.)
the beginning of number 5 also sound like that song where the guys she caught me red handed creepin on the bathroom floor, man i forgot the name of that song
There's an 18 min video on the Amen break 'the worlds most important 6 second drum loop'. Worth watching .........but the narrator no where near as much fun as this guy!! :-)
Hossam Ramzy is not the wirter of the song .. the song is very old. made by the famous BIggest arabic composer:Abdel wahhab and sung in the 1950s I think...wow, not impossible 2 dcades ahead people will believe this song is made by Jay-z and originally by Hossam Ramzy
man you are a beast me and my wife sat up and watched every one of your vids you are the true def of a DJ mad shouts to ya from Dj Forthcomin from V.A.

Uphill Peace of Mind by Kid Dynamite. Check out Kool Breez's channel. He posted that song on Breaks,Beats, and Bullshit. I think it was on vol. 18 or 19. There's also a post for the full version by Carol Grimes and Frederick Knight as well.
you know, i play these songs all the freaking song while im cleaning or chilling and my kids and there friend just sit there lookin stuck dumb, because the songs i play r the ones that their listening to today. lol
woah woah woah wait a second the last one you did was a original that was used by daft punk then used by kanye but!!!!! I have been looking for the original to daft punks harder better faster stronger I praise you sir you actually just helped a lot of people find out that smaple, you do a sweet job uncovering hidden samples in music
What "I know you got soul" also sampled for a song called "glamorous life" not by sheila e, but another person, "you got it! the glamorous life, you got it, I'm living the life" Or something like that
That jungle brothers sample at 7:54ish was also used by NWA for "If it aint ruff it aint me". "Ren is a villian and you are just a hostage so whenever Im steppin cover your head like an ostrage" Niggaz been waitin for this suckas been hattin for this know why cause so many are realatin to this" MC Ren NWA old school fo sho! Have you heard of them? I sincerely urge you to check em out if at all possible. Artists/groups implemented include: Christine McVie, The Fatback Band, Disco Dub Band, Apostles, Brother Jack McDuff, Mandrill, Spanky Wilson, the list is virtually endless!!!
Magnificent compilation bro, i savour all of your videos, im as much of a digger and a true funkateer as you! But I must reluctantly point out a minute detail that you missed! :P Sorry. The drum break at the beginning of "Im Glad Youre Mine" by the Reverend Al Green, is the beat sample of a Massive Attack number called "Five Man Army", Classic tune, and woefully neglected! Peace, brov and keep reeling out the optimum funk cuts!
I'm glad you brought that up and encourage people to mention all samples outside of Hip-Hop. I do not listen to Massive Attack but DAMN, they sampled a lot of great tunes. I gotta get on them soon.
A taste of honey was also used by the funky 4 + 1 (sugarhill records) the song was called:"thats the joint". keep them comming, i love it!!! greetings from Holland!!
I heard somewhere that Positive K did the entire vocals by himself on that song "I Got a Man" (that means the female's vocals too!!!). Anyone know if that's true?
I think that first Hip-Hop artist that used sample #5 was group Funky 4+1 with their song "That's the joint" (1980). It's on YouTube so check it out. I love it
I don't believe Kanye West's song "Stronger" has a single sound from "Cola Bottle Baby". It's true that Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (incorrectly cited as "Harder Better Faster") was sampled, but only Daft Punk's vocoded lyrics were used -- not anything from Edwin Birdsong's track.
Just as a note, that one song you played, "Amen, Brother" by The Winstons, is actually a faster version of The Impressions' song "We're A Winner". Ironically, The Winstons toured as a backup group for The Impressions.
Sidenote: Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield were in the Impressions back then too.
I am from the era (The Days). One of our theme songs was "We're a Winner" by Curtis Mayfield, in 1967. the winstons came out with Amen in 1969. curtis Mayfield and the Imperials also came out with "Amen",well before the Winstons. One For your books. I love what you are doing. "Keep on Keeping on Bro".

I think that first Hip-Hop artist that used sample #5 was group Funky 4+1 with their song "That's the joint" (1980). It's on YouTube so check it out. I love it

Daft Punk sampled from Cola Bottle Baby, they sampled almost everything on the discovery album
but seriously funktuall you are funkalicius man love your vids

O.S.T.R. famous polish rapper used this sample :D

Go back to 1967, Curtis Mayfield We're a winner. Not 1969, The winstons. You'll be surprised. Telystar
