The Alexander's nose breaking story is among the least accepted theories, its a myth.
Muhammad Sa'im al-Dahr, got really mad because he thought the statue's face was too life like (which would be considered at that time even more than now forbidden by Islam) so he vandalized the statue and was hung. That is the most accepted theory. Not to get off subject or anything, George Benson is awesome.
Its interesting a blackman works hard on his talent and someone describes it as Raw talent!!such arrogance-All those concepts george uses are studied and he'll tell you he practises Hard
this particular tune is called 'all blues', and yes they are very together. if you happen to play an instrument, learn the chrods, the harmonies, and jam yourself into it. you'll get there sooner or later. youtube is full of great lessons. cheers,
Love how Miles used to base his phrasing on guitar playing, especially Charlie Christian's stuff. Now Benson and guys like Scofield borrow Miles' phrasing. Genius comes full circle.
@DeathCalamaro Miles Davis probably had a lot of influences. In his book he talked about the trumpet as "developing my voice" and he mentions Frank Sinatra in that regard.
@jazz1bro You are afraid hes a pure blackman?Your greeks ill tell you their teachers were Black people from Egypt(herodotus).Just in case you not aware the original Egyptians who built the Sphinx etc were jet black. The light skin mixed came later.George benson is a blackman with a little welsh thrown in!(The nose of the Sphinx was broken by Alexander because it was to flat and African.Shame george did plastic surgery
Wes Montgomery , Joe Pass , George Benson....ALL great guitarists and geniuses . You can't say that one is better than the other . As Blahman stated below.....that's a subjective statement .
I would catch Jack McDuff at the old McKee's DJ Show Lounge in the early 60's when George Benson was his regular guitarist. He had a huge Gibson guitar and people would say he could be a young Wes.
I love what John did with In a Silent Way. He did the song great justice. In fact, I'm going to go listen to the Great Miles Davis version as soon as this video ends. The video got me jonesing for it.
this is a gig a tribute to miles the hole gig is to miles i have the dvd it has dennis chambers, paco delouthia and john maglohln and every one thanx matt
yeah, like every decision miles davis made was based in musicality. miles was a pimp and was often pimped by white boys whose only intention was to gain professional significance through their association with him.
please, explain to me - as I'm certain many of you will attempt to - the emic-cultural, organic-intellectual, or structual-musical motivations of a jazz musician, in the 40s, 50s, 60, or 70s, to experiment with "fusing" their cultural/musical practices with those of "rock and roll".
what white boys are you referring too?? There were a lot of black guys who associated themselves with Miles Davis as well..were they pimping him too or was it just the evil white boys?
MAn, McLaughlin's tone is horrible and he adds all these useless fast licks to the piece. It just runs the simple meditative feel of In a Silent Way. Listen to the original...Miles probably would have smacked him one if he'd played like that in the studio. His spazzy vibrato is pure cheese too. He sounds like he's typing not playing music.
McLaughlin is one of the great guitarists, of that there is no doubt. I just think sometimes he is far more technical than he is groovey. Excuse the poor analogy but I would much rather listen to Bernie Edwards than Marcus Miller for similar reasons
Oh yeah, he also plays those lines on the guitar that make "soulful" players like Benson weep, lol. I think they are the perfect contrast although they could have switched songs just to see, "what happens".
I only wish I had one thousandth of the endurance and career stamina that Johhny McLaughlin had, the talent wouldn't hurt either, lol. Does anyone have his very first record? One listen and you knew that this cat was going to be around a long long time, innovative to say the least is an understatement. Shit I sound like a teenage girl talking about this guy, lol. It's only harmless envy of his "amazingness". I am going to post some vids of my meager attempts at leading bands, very soon here.
I'm a white male guitarist but I see machlaughin as being the perfect white stereotypical musician trying to play soul; He is like someones dad dancing at your wedding
Its alright I am latin guitarist and I think he is doing the "spanish thing" here like a dad dancing at the wedding. The fact is that he does it quite well in his own "English" way. He plays like a master craftsman and sometimes the furniture he makes is more for presentation than for "lounging around" in. He does create timeless enduring pieces though. John has what they call "endurance squared". This makes him timeless and therefore "one of the immortals". We honor each other through music.
This is a great tribute to miles davis, but I would love to have that signal prosessor that john play's on,man what a great sound;and George Benson was simple, but outstanding.
This is almost good as the album "Witchcraft" which has George playing some old classic jazz standards such as All Blues, Love for Sale, etc. Love this version.
nice bass wooden tone too. i like it better when they don't walk over this tune. then it turns into a blues waltz, well 6/8 waltz. loses the character of the tune

This is interesting and well worth watching. Both George and John are remarkable players. I watch/listen with admiration for their dedication and their skill as musicians and players. I'm going to see George Benson September 8th at the Liberty Jazz Festival! It's so amazing listening to such great artists with the NY skyline in the backround. I can't wait!
Thanks Jazzbro. I heard a version by Larry Carlton (live at the Hot Potato) with Abe on bass...good stuff. Still, Benson is my favorite jazz guitarrist, hands down.
Where can one find the whole video or DVD? Is there such an item out there? This was great! Was the second part of the Mclaughlin song In a Silent Way?
McLaughlin does play in a silent way. The concert was a tribute to Miles Davis, was hosted by George Duke and took place during a Spanish festival called EXPO 92 - I think it was Spain???
It's a real shame whoever posted this didn't put the rest on. Larry Coreal (spelt correctly??)and Stanley Clarke come after this and play some pretty nifty stuff.
I saw it years ago, but have only found this since. If you find it, let me know...
The thing is that there were guys that could have played this catchy crap all over Miles at the time that he recorded this stuff!!! Blues over Miles? Yeah, it could have been done then, but Miles wouldn't have liked it.
I love GB, truly one of the greats. His talent is is incredible. I think, however, that his taste in music is irrelevant when it comes to an album like "Breezin'"... I think it's based more on good taste in quality of life, if you know what I mean ;-).
He'd be making less, yes, but George was already doing very well before his pop success in the mid-seventies, making quite a bit more than 50o a night even back then.
Too bad Benson is such a wanker. Breezin almost singlehandedly killed jazz for me. He should stick to the blues/bebop mode, he is amazingly talented just has bad taste in music (and shirts, Breezin again).
keep such thoughts to yourself. why don't u tell benson that face to face,by the way breezin was a cover that benson did. evidently you don't play an instrument but the master of idiocrisy!
Benson seems to have very little musical ideas. Much of his solo is constructed with tricks. Compare with a blues solo made by Wes, lot of original and new melodies. Im sorry but this blues solo is very poor. KLPJAZZ
hmm, thanks mikuchy, a critical musical opinion from someone who has Robbie Wiliams on his channel..did you end up here by mistake? theres a good new britney video out..
GB does acknowledge Wes as the master! I'd have to disgree with you to a great degree. While he does use a l;ot of devices to generate excitement. He is not at all lacking in a sense of melodic construction.Unlike most who have to rely on "stolen"transcribed/textbook approaches most of the time. It takes certain life experiences to play anywhere as original as GB, Wes ,and the other innovators. Guess what as the late Tony Scott said "the Black Gods of Jazz" was no mistake!
no tricks, you must not play an instrument, and by the way he was playin accents attributed to wes's style. users post videos because people love these tunes and artist or bands,etc...a tribute is not meant to rock, kik ass, totaly destroy at every turn.that is his interpretation of payin tribute to wes get a life!!!!!
George is a hard act to follow and John McLaughlins piece lacks soul. I mean hullo you got a giant stage and the man is playin sitting on his ass... common!
I agree with TelecasterKid. John became famous because of his collaborations with some big names in jazz and Indian classical. If you scrutnize his repertory you'll hardly find a handfull of melodious pieces and the rest are all high speed note runs with a few musical parts in between.
Mclaughin didn't seem to have much emotion... just like 4 or 5 slow notes and then speed out the ass and then slow again... I dunno... didn't liked him as much as george
There are a few masters of the guitar...George Benson being THE master of his style. If you don't understand that, you know NOTHING about music or guitaring in general.
your welcome.

you can say one plays from the head and one plays from the heart safely.
Benson is a Ear, Heart and soul player, McLaughlin is a head and technique player.
I know this because Benson hits phrases that excite my emotions and McLaughlin hits phrases that make me think.
Pretty simple...now who is better depends on what you like...soul or intellect?
Benson has Both in my opinion..
I like both but favor Benson!..Such raw talent!

It's a real shame whoever posted this didn't put the rest on. Larry Coreal (spelt correctly??)and Stanley Clarke come after this and play some pretty nifty stuff.
I saw it years ago, but have only found this since. If you find it, let me know...

Yep.

I agree with you Raph.If George only played bebop and jazz,he'd still be grinding it out on the road, making 2 to 5 hundred bucks a gig!

He'd be making less, yes, but George was already doing very well before his pop success in the mid-seventies, making quite a bit more than 50o a night even back then.

I can't believe some people slashing GB back !!He is a legend and I love his playing !

KLPJAZZ

hey I didn't write nothing here.I think someone else is in my account.I will change my passworld -.-'
I don't care about jazz or whatever.

Guess what as the late Tony Scott said "the Black Gods of Jazz" was no mistake!
guiaxe1 4 years ago
no tricks, you must not play an instrument, and by the way he was playin accents attributed to wes's style. users post videos because people love these tunes and artist or bands,etc...a tribute is not meant to rock, kik ass, totaly destroy at every turn.that is his interpretation of payin tribute to wes get a life!!!!!

George has great feel and sensitivity on top of a monster technique. Great bass playing as well.

Gotta love Benson adding his bebop style to this version of All Blues. Jazzin' up the blues if you will.

Sounds like Mclaughlin was playing something Scofield-ish from the 'Star People' era...

The song is called In a Silent Way by Miles Davis - and he did it real justice
The album is also called in a silent way. It is a beauty

The song is called All Blues by Miles Davis from the Kind of Blues album!!!lol

Really???? I was referring to the piece after GB - John Mclauglin's version of In A Silent Way.
You should watch these all the way through, you might be suprised!!!

George is a hard act to follow and John McLaughlins piece lacks soul. I mean hullo you got a giant stage and the man is playin sitting on his ass... common!

I agree with TelecasterKid. John became famous because of his collaborations with some big names in jazz and Indian classical. If you scrutnize his repertory you'll hardly find a handfull of melodious pieces and the rest are all high speed note runs with a few musical parts in between.
vijaysequeira 4 years ago
Mclaughin didn't seem to have much emotion... just like 4 or 5 slow notes and then speed out the ass and then slow again... I dunno... didn't liked him as much as george

Whats the name of the song who is John McLaughlin playing here?

It's not John McLaughlin, it's Steve Vai. The song is called 'Doggy Style'

There are a few masters of the guitar...George Benson being THE master of his style. If you don't understand that, you know NOTHING about music or guitaring in general.
Guitarz1970 4 years ago
Perfect contrast... Benson being a traditionalist and McLaughlin a revolutionary.
