Vizzutti is not a typical jazz player. He's not a masterpiece in jazz methodic, he's THE BEST TRUMPET PLAYER!!! He's able to play everything with the instrument, his technique and sound is the best of then world!!
I've seen him in several videos and he does not use the mic to his advantage. Notice that the sax came through nice and clear as he was on top of the mic. Doesn't anybody check this crap out before the concert, freakin' amateurs.
I'm certainly glad Clifford Brown and Charlie Parker didn't feel that way when they made their "with strings" albums. Roy Hargrove and Wynton Marsalis have both recorded with strings in past few years. Those are great albums. Most string players probably aren't that likely to have studied the idiosyncrasies that make up a jazz performance, but it is the musician that plays jazz, not the instrument.
@xenorules Can not? They may not have the style, but that's because they haven't trained for it. Doesn't mean they can't work towards it. The solos here are pretty decent. And Allen Vizzutti is killin' it. Jazz doesn't discriminate. Just because orchestras aren't accustom to the art doesn't mean they can't learn. And strings have been incorporated into jazz for years--Clifford Brown with strings, Charlie Parker with strings--to name a couple.
The orchestra is too laud overwelmingly hiding the sound of the soloist trumpet. I can not hardly pick up the high points of the soloist, its the drums and the other background music which prevails.
By No means am i saying that the masterful Ellington is corny. whats lame is the arrangement. Sorry folks.. nice solos though from the saxes. I'll give y'all that much but damn they ruined the tune. Check out the original and you'll hear what i m saying. Peace and love! =0P
I play principal oboe in the Temple Symphony, but was playing 2nd Tenor Sax during this segment of the concert. Vizzutti is one AMAZING player-and person! Doesn't get any better than this!
Ellington CORNY??? That's not even worth addressing. Besides, the point is the great Viz! Ok, so it's a different setting, but the rhythm section swings. Where's the corn?
It's a Strayhorn composition. You're confused about his point. He means the orchestra appearing here in this very video is corny, not that the Ellington orchestra is corny.
I dunno if I give the arrangement any points for "degree of difficulty." It's a really simple string part that sounds like an afterthought to an ordinary big band chart.

That symphony can swing, kinda rare you know. It is a pretty sweet arrangement for orchestra, you dont see that much.

Well, but the strings are just playing pads. The "jazz band" portion of the orchestra carries the brunt of the arrangement.
