I like your music steve but why do you like bashing the the brits are you decended from southern irish stock. leave the crap out and i will like you a bit more.
All wars are fought over money. And the north beset the south and came upon them like a plague, for fear of loosing their profits. Instead of letting slavery die a sure and natural death as the founding fathers designed. Therefore, to this day, you are a subject. Funny how all the "pinkos" seem to forget that Lincoln was the first republican war criminal. Thank god the democrats started all the rest of the wars till the Bush(s) came along to cleanse them of all wrong doing.
The sad part is we're gonna do this again because I would bet the same reasons that almost led to our extermination then is what brought the need for slaves to rebuild this land after who knows how long abandoned over war. They practically rid this country of survivors of it probably. They're ready to do it to the world again. Who?, Who wanted to lead us back then up until now.
They were around, They're never going away--> "Governments"
So do you think that the recent war is fought for Iraqi freedom or money??? You left your opinion out on that subject!!! The South started making money and the north wanted in. The north wasn't some great emancipating body....that's only what they portrayed. The north did the same things the Democrats have been doin. They sell a person as a product to get things they want. Hence Obama gets all the black votes and a Democrat is in office!!!
I like when he makes the comment about if The South would have won everybody would talk southern. Wrong Stevie!!! The South didn't want any northern land!!! They wanted their own land and country, not the Northern land. I agree the war was over money, but not really all about slavery. If you are ignorant enough to believe it was all about slavery, I guess you think our present war is for Iraqi freedom. It is about oil and cash dumbass!!!
Of course the Civil War was about slavery. The South proudly said so when they started it, in their Cornerstone Speech and Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina declarations of secession. You should really read them---the South's declarations cite "slave" and "slavery" eighty-two times and say "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery---the greatest material interest of the world."
I am a southerner, I grew up on a cotton farm. I am about as far from racist as you can get. Hell I voted for Obama. I know people from Michigan who are more racist than any good ole boys down here. And yes the war was about slavery ( The CSA's right to make their own laws about slavery). I have a rebel flag liscence plate on my truck, I know some black folks that have. Plantations are about the only to our heritage down here, since Sherman burned all our courthouses and record.
Just got back from Afghanistan with a Maine infantry unit. Steve's right, all wars have some monetary driving force, but common folk do have a vested interest in them, too. I would like to see the Cheney's and Michael Moore's fight to the death instead of spreading their respective side's propaganda. Sometime's you just gotta fight those that would kill us for just being different from them, and have.Great song that brings chills. Let's all make America great, not tear her down.
Don't you people realize that you all are doing nothing but fueling the fire? Racism exists every where. It doesn't matter if you are black, white, or what ever. People will always hate one another for their differences. Hate is the strongest emotion in existence. And by continuing to degrade one another and make simple comments, your merely declaring your selves RACIST.
Please don't assume that Cope, Ted and Warrior represent all white southerners. As a white woman, I have lived in two southern states, and find it easy (if not easier) to meet great Black friends in the south than in the north. Painting all people of one race with a single brush is the essence of racism, so I would suggest that perhaps you are racist.
Copendipper667, I live in Georgia and I know exactly what you mean. Californians, New Yorkers, they don't get it because they don't know any southern black people. Yes, some black people are nicest people you could ever ask to meet, but most of them down here, just because of the way their raised (not because of their skin color) are ignorant and hateful. My best friends and I made a system of rating black people based on their attitude. Its called top ten.
I agree with u the warriors code good point but i dont think that that shit will ever be forgotten everybody is to stubborn especially round here where im from i live on an old southern plantation and aint got nuthin to do with slavery but black people down here in the south are assholes and im not a racist but its hard to have a black dude as your best friend
All the Civil War, if there is such a thing as a Civil War, was to get a lot of good men killed. We are still wage slaves, all of this once Beautiful Planet.
Nice that Earle idealises Irish immigrants at the time of the Civil War. No mention though of the Draft Riots where Irish Catholics, enraged by the Emancipation Proclamation, hunted down Blacks in New York and beat them to death, tried to set fire to the Colored Orphan Asylum on Fifth Avenue etc. Over 2,000 were killed and 8,000 wounded, 50 buildings, including two Protestant churches, were burned to the ground. Strange how none of this is celebrated during "St Patty's Day".........
It is obvious that he hasn't a clue about history as the British persecuted the Ulster Presbyterians out of the country in the 1700's. They settled in the southern states and fought the British in the American War of Independance. The Irish Roman Catholics didn't come into America until the 1850's and to suggest that they fought for the South is nonsense unless the South fought for Rome as good Irish Catholics only fight for that tryannical power.
It is obvious that YOU don't have a clue about history! It wasn't "the British" who persecuted the Ulster Presbyterians, but the Episcopalians. Ulster Presbyterians ARE British (heard of Loyalists?!). Some Irish Roman Catholics fought for the South - Emmet Guards (Alabama); Southern Celts and St. Marys Volunteers (13th Louisiana); Irish Volunteers (5th Georgia); OConnell Guards (17th Virginia); Emerald Guards (9th Louisiana); Sarsfield Rangers (7th Louisiana) etc.
You don't seem to have heard the words - it's about Irish fighting with the 20th Maine, a northern unit. But while you describe general patterns, there were Irish Catholics in the south. In any case, it is based on a novel, as Earle clearly says. To Setzer - I agree we ignore nativism in the 19th C, but he can't fit it all into one song. My guess is that Earle is quite aware of that history, as he has a strong interest in history. He has written about immigration today (CIty of Immigrants.)
MacHaggis...yes. The north should have let us go. My family name is Craig...and I see a lot of similarities between the Scottish struggles with the English, and the War of Northern Aggression.
Historical revisionists make me want to puke in my mouth. About 6% of southerners owned slaves. It's ridiculous to think that the other 94% would go fight in a war that had nothing to do with them. Also, it wasn't just whites who owned slaves- free blacks and indians owned slaves too. If you are so stuck in your mindset- read a book called "The South was Right" by James and Walter Kennedy.
I would also add that, with the exception of Delaware, portions of the states you mention had strong southern sympathies and are not really representative of the north. (Delaware had a strong abolition movement, especially in areas where Quakers had settled, and voluntary emancipation made slavery rare, if legal, in those areas.) It is significant that the Emancipation Proclamation didn't affect those states. And we are probably both asses for trying to talk about history in soundbytes. :)
I do research on the abolition movement, thanks. I should have added the qualfier that slavery was "generally" illegal, but I was answering a very general question, which is why I suggested he read more. My point was that while making either side the "good guys" is problematic, and war is almost always about economics, the movement for abolition was an important part of the picture.
Was the American Civil War not fought over whisky taxation (money!!) and the slavery issue a secondary issue? I'm sure there were slaves in the North!!!
"Frontier" is a relative term; referring to newly settled areas. It kept moving west. During the late colonial and early republic, it was the Appalachian and Allegheny mountains; by the late 1800s it was the western US. It was often poorer folks and recent immigrants who settled on the frontier, because land in the east was filled up. The Whiskey Rebellion was in the 1790s on the frontier in western Pennsylvania (which became part of the north, not the south, by the way!)
The reason the South had to pass laws against blacks and whites associating with each other is because poor whites and blacks WERE associating with each other. Racism was repugnant even then., except to those who needed it to maintaintheir way of life. Being in the minority, they hunkered down and turned it into some kind of holy mission. Holy missions don.t have to make sense.
The Civil War...was faught and had to be faught.....my Family (Native North Carolinians since 1666) faught for our homes...and we agreed that slavery had to end...
But I will not let any man......(Black, White, Or Otherwise tell me how to live...who I should spend my money on...who I should provide for and what I should believe....
and I pray God we can bring this country back to what it was...and live in peace with our brothers
America is a better country now, then it use to be. Don't believe me. Try getting a good job, a decent place to live, as a minority, or a black person in the 1950's. Or try running for president, for that matter. The fact is the old America was a racist country. I guarantee if we had a time machine, no old white guy would want to go back to the 50's and live as a black person, or a minority.
NCBoy...I am interested. Please describe your "haritage." Many will fight and die for families and homes (and the liberty you imply in the third sentence), however I am not sure what you mean by heritage.
Also, why do you use "we" to describe your family's views about slavery. You were born much to late to take part in that particular discussion. "They" would be a more appropriate pronoun.
To paraphrase Tom Paine: tradition/heritage is the tyranny of the dead over the living.
"The circumstances of the world are continually changing, and the opinions of men change also; and as government is for the living, and not for the dead, it is the living only that has any right in it. That which may be thought right and found convenient in one age, may be thought wrong and found inconvenient in another. In such cases, who is to decide, the living, or the dead?"
This was amazing! I've read The Killer Angels and seen the movie Gettysburg, where Kilrain is featured, and I loved this song! I kept leaping up and doing the rebel yell while watching it! XD Also, I roleplay as Kilrain, so it was great to hear this!
not opinion this is the fact that it started because the north put import tariffs(taxes) on all clothes coming from europe(so the south would have to buy from the north) Well the south did not like this because the northes clothes well sucked(NO JOKE!) this is when the south stopped sending the north cotton and separated form the union forming the confederate states if America! This is when the civil war started! (that is how it happened)
I don't see why people keep arguing over what caused the war. It was over 200 years ago, it's over now, and even if we still wanted to talk about it everyone would have different opinions (notice I said opinions) on how it started.
Oh and just to say another thing, you especially cannot have a decent conversation with a yankee hahah (I'm just kiddin.)
Well, nice performance by Steve yet again. Copperhead Road's still my favorite.
If you're speaking of the American Civil War, it was in the 1860's, which is not 200 years ago. The fact that we are still talking about it shows how momentous it was. And remember, this war was recent enough that my grandfather told me stories about it that he got from his grandfather who was there. There were people alive during the 1960's Civil rights era who were born slaves. We need to keep talking about it, because it's important. We may disagree about it, but God help us if we forget it.
I'm Scottish and we've been at "war" with the English forever. We're different than they are (and theiy're not all bad LOL) but we are a different people. Maybe Southerners feel that way about teh North?
There are N/S differences, but US history is complex - a patchwork of ethnic and cultural groups immigrating at different times. I suggest you read some US history before defending the south as the underdog! Zinns A Peoples History of the US, is a good underdog perspecitve. The north did not have clean hands, in the slave trade or after the Civil War. Yet the south was defending a feudal system that you might want to criticize in the English. The poor were most of the dead on either side.
As far as my ancestry goes my family was all from the South. I can't find a single yankee in my bloodline. I have 3 direct Confederate ancestors and about 6 collateral Confederate ancestors. One side of my family were poor white Southerners and the other side were pretty afluent Plantation owners. Most of my family coming from Alabama and other Southern states moving on to the Southern state of Texas in later years but I do have plantation owning ancestors from Virginia.
If you have that many plantation owners in your ancestry, then you must Black blood in you ( By the the way that's cool with me. I do not care people are people, and we all have red blood.) somewhere, Because it is a fact that the plantation owners, let us say did enjoy the company of black women. Like it or not, that's just the way it is, and was.
For the fools of the North it was about slavery. For the fools of the south it was about state's rights. For the bastards that started the war, it was about POWER. The South didn't want to bow down to the power of the criminal banking system, and they were punished for it. Slavery was already dying before the war started. If anything, the Federal Government's agression caused more fools to rise up and defend slavery. Lincoln didn't give a shit about slavery.
hell fire, the yankees were trying to control all the money, dumb ass, steve becareful you dont betray your upbringing, fuck abe and fuck the yankee bastards
states rights was justification for war. this is different than the cause of war wmds for example. all wars are fought for money and or land from which one can make money off of.
On the last sentence, you are correct. State's rights is what got the poor white man to take up arms to defend a rich plantation owner's right to own labor, which in effect drove down the wages of free labor. The average white person in the South got little from slavery but lower wages and poor standard of living. But this state's rights canard drove them to fight to defend a system that did nothing but fuck them over. And that's what's wrong with the South now.
Your comment is so totally bull. Poor whites in the south didn't get rich after the war either so who will you blame now? Try the federal government that left it to northern carpetbaggers to rape what was left. The south fought for the right to choose locally and not from dips like you in love with the nanny federal government supplying your means as well as your regurgitated thoughts. How dumb is it to fault "rich plantation owners" and then "that is what is wrong with the south today"? WTF!!!
The war was about the state right to slavery. Read the various states articles of secession. They explicitly mention how their property rights were not being protected in the north, ie how northern states passed laws that prevented slave catchers from bringing escaped slaves back. Moreover, Jefferson Davis wanted a more centralized government in the south than the federal system of the USA, ie, less states rights. Read a book you stars and bartards
I don't think it was so much about slavery as states rights. So i guess i disagree with him. Not that slavery didn't play apart in it..but border states like West Virginia, Kentucky, and Maryland still had slavery through out and for a brief while after the civil war.
West Virginia was required to have some clause about abolition in its constitution when it became a state. Maryland adopted the similar clause. In WV, there were very few slaves. Only Kentucky and Delaware held onto slavery at the end of the war. And my ancestors were New Yorkers who bought land in Northwestern Virginia. They had no allegiance to the planters in the Virginia tidewater, and they had no use for slavery. So they joined the union army and union militias.
The Confederate Flag flew over Slavery. While this is true, the same can be said of the u.S. Flag. The u.S. Flag flew over slavery a full 70 years before the Confederate States of America came into existence. The Confederate Flag never flew over the Ships that brought the slaves over here. To top it all off, the Confederate States of America freed her slaves in 1863; the Federal Union didn't do it until 1868 with the passage of the 13th amendment.
yall are about 2 call me a racist but i really dont care.Y cant blacks let slavery go?Ok it was bad, my family owned 3 plantations, but i didnt, and not one black man livin in america has every been forced to work a cotton field.I aint gona apoligize for slavery cuz iv never owned a slave, just like uv never been a slave. The confederate flag flew over slavery for 5 years, while the US flag flew 4 100 years.Get over it,we realized our mistake and now its been fixed. lets get on with our lives.thank u
@TheWarriorsCode Whites mistreated the black they whipped them hit them starved them to death you idiot now I am not black but you know what, they were forced into slavery even sold, smuggled, and even stolen from their families. Mabey you should go back to school and mabey even read a freaken history book. Are you trying to look smart or trying to save your family name because for us smart people that know what happened to them know that saying that is an offensive and also a racial remark.
@TheWarriorsCode I'm from Australia, but I have the same problem with black aboriginals here. They moan about us whites enslaving them and mistreating them and they want us to apologize, but none of them still living today were forced into slavery or mistreated, and none of our white generation made them slaves or mistreated them. They all need to GET OVER IT. IT WAS 250 YEARS AGO FOR GOODNESS SAKE!
That is a dumb staement. Two wrongs, do not make a right. Any one aver tell you that? Come on Cowboy, Use you head for something, besides holding your hat, and your hair.
the civil war fought because the south couldn't afford to lose the south's high income from cotton and tobacco i agree with ya robertellis3 the reason why there is no way the war was about slavary is because if you actaully a black history book you will find that the slaves were treated worse in some places of the north than in the south and people in the north had slaves too im not sayin that slavery was right cause it wasn't
also im a redneck from virginia born and bred in the southren way of life i fly two confederate flag on my pickup because i am honoring my ancestors who fought in the civil war. im not a raccist i have many black friends. all of which are offended by my flags
u know lincoln was quoted as saying "If i could end the war without freeing a single slave i would".robert e.lee owned ZERO slaves while both sherman and grant owned several dozen.Slavery was later added as the "theme" if u will to give northern soldiers a moral motivation. The war broke out cuz the south suceeded and that only happened cuz we had no say in government.EVERY southern state voted against licoln and he still won.anybody remember "no taxation without representaion?"
its the stupidist thing in the world when ppl say the confederate flag is rascist and the war was mostly about the tarrifs and taxes the north was putting on the south and also states rights!
Some people just don't know their history. There was more to the Civil War then Slavery, then money it's those damn texts books in schools full of Bias. Not looking at things from two sides but one.
All I'm going to say is that the South was the least democratic of all the regions of the country. It was an oligarchy of large farmers, who owned lots of slaves, but the mass of people were poor whites, who were given all sorts of propaganda about how bad the slaves were. The Civil War was when the large farmers who using the poor whites to maintain their class privilege.
"If I let them leave, then who will pay for the country?" - Abe Lincoln
The south was being unfairly taxed. a northern controlled congress put high tax on exporting cotton and put tariffs on European goods, forcing the south to sell cotton to the north and then buy northern goods made with that cotton. Grant, not Lee, owned slaves until the it was illegal. Lincoln threw 2500 law abiding journalists in jail and had armed troops take over the NY Times and NY post. Who was more democratic?
This guy is right. The War for Southern Independence was about money. The south had one of the world's largest economies, and Lincoln wouldn't let that go, despite that fact that in a true Federalist gov't, a state can pull out at any time they like. But hey, why should the lives of a tens of thousands of Irish draftees matter the Lincoln? All of the rich people paid their way out of service. What was that about oligarchies and unfair treatment of lower classes..?
tell me why lincoln paid to send some back to africa when they went back they sold each other again. i love this song. this song is about an irishman who came to the south just like my fam so screw the haters if you don't like it don't listen it's real simple. let those who do enjoy it do so in peace thanks
hate to burst your bubble but he is fighting for the north in the song, joshua chamberlain was a yankee. but hell interprete the song the way you want to hear it, if it were my choice the character would be from texas.
If you are you know good and full well why that is, and if not its because the American Civil War(War of Yankee Aggression) is the seminal moment in the history of the south.
Either way Steve Earle is an amazing talent with a good heart.
To all of you who speak ill towards the Confederate flag I have a question. What flag flew over the slave ships out of Africa in 1800? What flag flew as America was stealing half of Mexico in the Mexican war? I still love the American flag but also the Confederate flag..And I'm a Yankee!
Steve is right, the war was about states rights, their rights to own slaves. I'm from the south and love the south, but it don't mean everything we've always done was right. Good song too!
It wasnt just about the right to own slaves. The North was destroying the Southern economy by imposing sanctions against their import of textiles from overseas factories, mainly in England. The North wanted them to buy from them. The Union only took up the cause of abolition in 1863 when Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, because he was losing at the time, to get more blacks to join his army instead of the Confederacy and to try and garner European support.
The victors write the history and few people ever take the trouble to learn the real truth. I'm glad your sharing this suppressed information! The civil war was the first time the constitution took a major blow. The south had the protected right to secede under such conditions.
well as a history major i guess your both alil right/and wronge... states rights was the main issue which includes slavery and tarriffs.. but also had to do with disgruntled southern dems who had split their party which allowed for rep victory... also england/france would never have supported the southern cause because of their slavery policies.. lincoln wasn't tring to get black soliders, not why he signed the EP, and blacks wernt allowed to fight in the south till the last years :P :)
A little weak on France&England, some in power did want to support the Confederacy, your reasoning that it was due to the use of slaves is incorrect and purely revisionist history, it was a tactical decision after the Crimean war. Expanding their empires was priority #1. Anti-slavery would be a mask worn later. England built several war ships for the south that sank 58+ northern commercial ships with losses over $6.5 mil(1865 dollars), the US won in 1871 a Geneva settlement of $15.5 mil in gold.
This was a great novel, but it was put into a turgid movie. His son writes horrible novels, which are made into even worse movies, movies that would disagree with Steve Earle's assertion on the causes of the civil war. Steve Earle is a person from my background who believes in much of what I believe.
The Confederate Battle Flag represents all Southern, and even Northern, Confederates regardless of race or religion and is the symbol of less government, less taxes, and the right of the people to govern themselves. It is flown in memory and honor of our Confederate ancestors and veterans who willingly shed their blood for Southern independence.
How terrible that a once-great musician like Steve has become a full-blown, babbling communist who hates America and will waste most of his energy on undermining the very freedoms that allow him to sell records and express his warped and jaundiced views as he does...his music used to be SO good, but now it's basically depressing, annoying, and lame. This particular song is beautiful, though; the album version is much better than this live one.
What a flaming idiot you are. The freedoms you speak of with so little understanding apply equally to all. That includes even babbling, America-hating communists (in which Steve Earle is definitely not numbered). People who speak opinions which do not agree with yours (or anyone else's) do NOT "undermine freedom", they PROVE that freedom still exists.
That's the same as saying that Islamists' arguing or killing in order to enact sharia law only proves that freedom still exists, or that allowing a pro-slavery lobby to flourish only proves that freedom still exists...at some point you have to recognize that not all expression should be encouraged, because the free exercise of certain ideologies--such as socialism and Islam--leads to absolute tyranny.
You're not arguing honestly. Legit limits on freedom of speech (yelling 'Fire' in a theatre, etc) exist. Sharia and slavery are undemocratic and unconstitutional by nature, ergo not legit. Earle's right to speak out against right-wing is totally covered by the 1st amendment. Earle is not burning the constitution, or calling for dictatorship or theocracy.
Get a brain you lying vermin. Earle is a communist, and a hypocrite at that--your classic limousine liberal who rails against capitalism as he relishes his royalties. Communism IS slavery, and unconstitutional in its denial of freedoms. Steve now sucks in many ways, as do you. Move to Cuba if you love poverty so much.
Bonehead fascist Bush/Cheney-lover. Shoulda known. Hope you enjoy the NSA reading your emails. Without warrants. Courtesy of Bush and the do-nothing corrupt GOP majority in Congress who passed the Patriot Act. And you're worried about communists!? So much for the US constitution, you hypocrite. I'm outta here.
Democrap squealing babies wail: "They didn't 'connect the dots'!!" We start 'connecting the dots', and they wail: "They're spying on us!!" Liberals squeal we should invade Darfur and East Timor and Tibet to free those places, but when we do it in the Middle East of course we're villians...such ludicrous ignorance...
Another cheap, bullshit, hypocritical argument. Foreign police actions are hardly a popular Liberal position. And when Clinton sent troops to Somalia and Kosovo, the GOP screamed "nation-building" and "not our business". And Iraq is different? If so, WHY DID THE RIGHT F*CK UP THIS WAR SO BADLY? WHY DIDN'T YOU SECURE THE BORDER AND SEND ENOUGH TROOPS?
The whole thing would have been over and done with long ago if not for the Marxist Democrap weasel enemies within our own citizenry/leadership, handcuffing our troops and giving so much aid and comfort to our enemies that the sub-human Muuuuslim animals actually rely on the American left as their cheerleaders, and redouble their efforts with each Harry Reid/John Murtha speech and each issue of the New York Times--that's why!
Give a neocon enough rope, and watch him hang himself with it. So that's what you think of the people the troops are dying to defend and create democracy for? That they are "subhuman Muuuuslim animals"? That would be funny if it wasn't so fucked up and pathetic. You are your own best counterargument.
Hmmm...oh, I see my horrible error now--yes, you're correct, all of the nice Muuuuslims in Iraq are those that we are liberating from Islamic tyranny, including the Al Qaeda and Ansar al Islam and Hezbollah sandmonkeys that behead innocents and walk into nursery schools with bombs strapped to themselves...how wrong I was to make a distinction between combatants and would-be members of a fledgling democracy!
You lack basic cognitive function, buy...keep searching and you just might find the conservative man that will endure your folly long enough to school you in some basic wisdoms, such as that liberal weenies like yourself are kept free only by the efforts and risks and sacrifices of rough men better than them who are willing to lay their lives on the line and do violence to evil forces such as the Islamists...happy Memorial Day, son
I like your music steve but why do you like bashing the the brits are you decended from southern irish stock. leave the crap out and i will like you a bit more.

I'm pretty sure that Steve Earle borrowed this tune, as it's very similar to an old American tune called Cherokee Shuffle.

So do you think that the recent war is fought for Iraqi freedom or money??? You left your opinion out on that subject!!! The South started making money and the north wanted in. And yes the war was about slavery ( The CSA's right to make their own laws about slavery). I have a rebel flag liscence plate on my truck, I know some black folks that have.

Well technically @boats752 you're right - it was about the states' right to hold slaves. It's a difference without a distinction.

Please don't assume that Cope, Ted and Warrior represent all white southerners. As a white woman, I have lived in two southern states, and find it easy (if not easier) to meet great Black friends in the south than in the north. Painting all people of one race with a single brush is the essence of racism, so I would suggest that perhaps you are racist.
nilradem 1 year ago
Copendipper667, I live in Georgia and I know exactly what you mean. Californians, New Yorkers, they don't get it because they don't know any southern black people. Yes, some black people are nicest people you could ever ask to meet, but most of them down here, just because of the way their raised (not because of their skin color) are ignorant and hateful. My best friends and I made a system of rating black people based on their attitude. Its called top ten.

MrSetzer 1 year ago
You don't seem to have heard the words - it's about Irish fighting with the 20th Maine, a northern unit. But while you describe general patterns, there were Irish Catholics in the south. In any case, it is based on a novel, as Earle clearly says. To Setzer - I agree we ignore nativism in the 19th C, but he can't fit it all into one song. My guess is that Earle is quite aware of that history, as he has a strong interest in history. He has written about immigration today (CIty of Immigrants.)

MacHaggis...yes. The north should have let us go. My family name is Craig...and I see a lot of similarities between the Scottish struggles with the English, and the War of Northern Aggression.
craigclanof4 1 year ago

darlincommitme 2 years ago
I do research on the abolition movement, thanks. I should have added the qualfier that slavery was "generally" illegal, but I was answering a very general question, which is why I suggested he read more. My point was that while making either side the "good guys" is problematic, and war is almost always about economics, the movement for abolition was an important part of the picture.
darlincommitme 2 years ago
Was the American Civil War not fought over whisky taxation (money!!) and the slavery issue a secondary issue? I'm sure there were slaves in the North!!!
MacHaggis1745 2 years ago
Slavery was illegal in the north by then... tnough money certainly is an issue and as Steve says, slavery was an economic issue.
darlincommitme 2 years ago
And you may be mixing it with the Whiskey Rebellion, which was earlier. That was a smaller rebellion on the frontier, not between north and south.
darlincommitme 2 years ago
Can you explain the "frontier" please?
MacHaggis1745 2 years ago
"Frontier" is a relative term; referring to newly settled areas. It kept moving west. During the late colonial and early republic, it was the Appalachian and Allegheny mountains; by the late 1800s it was the western US. It was often poorer folks and recent immigrants who settled on the frontier, because land in the east was filled up. The Whiskey Rebellion was in the 1790s on the frontier in western Pennsylvania (which became part of the north, not the south, by the way!)
darlincommitme 2 years ago
The reason the South had to pass laws against blacks and whites associating with each other is because poor whites and blacks WERE associating with each other. Racism was repugnant even then., except to those who needed it to maintaintheir way of life. Being in the minority, they hunkered down and turned it into some kind of holy mission. Holy missions don.t have to make sense.

America is a better country now, then it use to be. Don't believe me. Try getting a good job, a decent place to live, as a minority, or a black person in the 1950's. Or try running for president, for that matter. The fact is the old America was a racist country. I guarantee if we had a time machine, no old white guy would want to go back to the 50's and live as a black person, or a minority.
cwcwful 2 years ago
NCBoy...I am interested. Please describe your "haritage." Many will fight and die for families and homes (and the liberty you imply in the third sentence), however I am not sure what you mean by heritage.
Also, why do you use "we" to describe your family's views about slavery. You were born much to late to take part in that particular discussion. "They" would be a more appropriate pronoun.
To paraphrase Tom Paine: tradition/heritage is the tyranny of the dead over the living.

The quote I referenced:
"The circumstances of the world are continually changing, and the opinions of men change also; and as government is for the living, and not for the dead, it is the living only that has any right in it. That which may be thought right and found convenient in one age, may be thought wrong and found inconvenient in another. In such cases, who is to decide, the living, or the dead?"

Oh and just to say another thing, you especially cannot have a decent conversation with a yankee hahah (I'm just kiddin.)
Well, nice performance by Steve yet again. Copperhead Road's still my favorite.
amerikanerMarinen 2 years ago

MacHaggis1745 2 years ago

Lincoln didn't give a shit about slavery.

states rights was justification for war. this is different than the cause of war wmds for example. all wars are fought for money and or land from which one can make money off of.
kimlimbo 3 years ago
On the last sentence, you are correct. State's rights is what got the poor white man to take up arms to defend a rich plantation owner's right to own labor, which in effect drove down the wages of free labor. The average white person in the South got little from slavery but lower wages and poor standard of living. But this state's rights canard drove them to fight to defend a system that did nothing but fuck them over. And that's what's wrong with the South now.
westphalianprinz 3 years ago
Your comment is so totally bull. Poor whites in the south didn't get rich after the war either so who will you blame now? Try the federal government that left it to northern carpetbaggers to rape what was left. The south fought for the right to choose locally and not from dips like you in love with the nanny federal government supplying your means as well as your regurgitated thoughts. How dumb is it to fault "rich plantation owners" and then "that is what is wrong with the south today"? WTF!!!
UfatRtard 3 years ago
The war was about the state right to slavery. Read the various states articles of secession. They explicitly mention how their property rights were not being protected in the north, ie how northern states passed laws that prevented slave catchers from bringing escaped slaves back. Moreover, Jefferson Davis wanted a more centralized government in the south than the federal system of the USA, ie, less states rights. Read a book you stars and bartards
ZANGZANGDANZ 3 years ago
I don't think it was so much about slavery as states rights. So i guess i disagree with him. Not that slavery didn't play apart in it..but border states like West Virginia, Kentucky, and Maryland still had slavery through out and for a brief while after the civil war.
Good song though..i like it.
libertyM60 3 years ago

Who was more democratic?
robertellis3 3 years ago
This guy is right. The War for Southern Independence was about money. The south had one of the world's largest economies, and Lincoln wouldn't let that go, despite that fact that in a true Federalist gov't, a state can pull out at any time they like. But hey, why should the lives of a tens of thousands of Irish draftees matter the Lincoln? All of the rich people paid their way out of service. What was that about oligarchies and unfair treatment of lower classes..?

justinruns 4 years ago
It wasnt just about the right to own slaves. The North was destroying the Southern economy by imposing sanctions against their import of textiles from overseas factories, mainly in England. The North wanted them to buy from them. The Union only took up the cause of abolition in 1863 when Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, because he was losing at the time, to get more blacks to join his army instead of the Confederacy and to try and garner European support.
ChrisF116 4 years ago 3
The victors write the history and few people ever take the trouble to learn the real truth. I'm glad your sharing this suppressed information! The civil war was the first time the constitution took a major blow. The south had the protected right to secede under such conditions.
0BarefootMama 4 years ago 3
well as a history major i guess your both alil right/and wronge... states rights was the main issue which includes slavery and tarriffs.. but also had to do with disgruntled southern dems who had split their party which allowed for rep victory... also england/france would never have supported the southern cause because of their slavery policies.. lincoln wasn't tring to get black soliders, not why he signed the EP, and blacks wernt allowed to fight in the south till the last years :P :)
chunkybutt420 4 years ago
A little weak on France&England, some in power did want to support the Confederacy, your reasoning that it was due to the use of slaves is incorrect and purely revisionist history, it was a tactical decision after the Crimean war. Expanding their empires was priority #1. Anti-slavery would be a mask worn later. England built several war ships for the south that sank 58+ northern commercial ships with losses over $6.5 mil(1865 dollars), the US won in 1871 a Geneva settlement of $15.5 mil in gold.

The Confederate Battle Flag represents all Southern, and even Northern, Confederates regardless of race or religion and is the symbol of less government, less taxes, and the right of the people to govern themselves. It is flown in memory and honor of our Confederate ancestors and veterans who willingly shed their blood for Southern independence.

it's a symbol of an enemy nation that attacked the USA - and lost. the flag should be put to rest along with the rebellion.

Nope. I don't think that they wanted fight anyone, but they would only identify with the southern poor.

This man is insane! He is not worthy to even sing about the great 20th Maine Regiment!

And by whom exactly were you given the authority to make that judgment, vato?

Tell an entire generation of Hungarian Jews that WWII was about money, Steve...the heroin fried out large chunks of your cognitive faculties.

This particular song is beautiful, though; the album version is much better than this live one.
philosopheromone 4 years ago
What a flaming idiot you are. The freedoms you speak of with so little understanding apply equally to all. That includes even babbling, America-hating communists (in which Steve Earle is definitely not numbered). People who speak opinions which do not agree with yours (or anyone else's) do NOT "undermine freedom", they PROVE that freedom still exists.
searcherboy 4 years ago
That's the same as saying that Islamists' arguing or killing in order to enact sharia law only proves that freedom still exists, or that allowing a pro-slavery lobby to flourish only proves that freedom still exists...at some point you have to recognize that not all expression should be encouraged, because the free exercise of certain ideologies--such as socialism and Islam--leads to absolute tyranny.
philosopheromone 4 years ago
You're not arguing honestly. Legit limits on freedom of speech (yelling 'Fire' in a theatre, etc) exist. Sharia and slavery are undemocratic and unconstitutional by nature, ergo not legit. Earle's right to speak out against right-wing is totally covered by the 1st amendment. Earle is not burning the constitution, or calling for dictatorship or theocracy.
searcherboy 4 years ago

Democrap squealing babies wail: "They didn't 'connect the dots'!!" We start 'connecting the dots', and they wail: "They're spying on us!!" Liberals squeal we should invade Darfur and East Timor and Tibet to free those places, but when we do it in the Middle East of course we're villians...such ludicrous ignorance...
philosopheromone 4 years ago
Another cheap, bullshit, hypocritical argument. Foreign police actions are hardly a popular Liberal position. And when Clinton sent troops to Somalia and Kosovo, the GOP screamed "nation-building" and "not our business". And Iraq is different? If so, WHY DID THE RIGHT F*CK UP THIS WAR SO BADLY? WHY DIDN'T YOU SECURE THE BORDER AND SEND ENOUGH TROOPS?
searcherboy 4 years ago
The whole thing would have been over and done with long ago if not for the Marxist Democrap weasel enemies within our own citizenry/leadership, handcuffing our troops and giving so much aid and comfort to our enemies that the sub-human Muuuuslim animals actually rely on the American left as their cheerleaders, and redouble their efforts with each Harry Reid/John Murtha speech and each issue of the New York Times--that's why!
philosopheromone 4 years ago
Give a neocon enough rope, and watch him hang himself with it. So that's what you think of the people the troops are dying to defend and create democracy for? That they are "subhuman Muuuuslim animals"? That would be funny if it wasn't so fucked up and pathetic. You are your own best counterargument.
searcherboy 4 years ago
Hmmm...oh, I see my horrible error now--yes, you're correct, all of the nice Muuuuslims in Iraq are those that we are liberating from Islamic tyranny, including the Al Qaeda and Ansar al Islam and Hezbollah sandmonkeys that behead innocents and walk into nursery schools with bombs strapped to themselves...how wrong I was to make a distinction between combatants and would-be members of a fledgling democracy!
philosopheromone 4 years ago
You lack basic cognitive function, buy...keep searching and you just might find the conservative man that will endure your folly long enough to school you in some basic wisdoms, such as that liberal weenies like yourself are kept free only by the efforts and risks and sacrifices of rough men better than them who are willing to lay their lives on the line and do violence to evil forces such as the Islamists...happy Memorial Day, son

dumbass. defending you're country doesnt mean bombing women and children overseas. the last war that meant fuckall was WW2.
