It's a pretty silly Straw Man to draw equivalence between people who favor nominal tax increases on the top income earners with communists in North Korea and East Germany, or a progressive tax code to Communism.
The income in sweden/norway/france/denmark is 25% lower than the US. This is because much of their economic system isnt invested in the stock market. It's invested into the government.
If we want to tax 50% the incomes will go down because the government loses money in interest on loans, while the stock market has gained 6.5% a year the last 200 years.
Norway actually has a higher per capita income, and all of those countries have a higher percentage of their GDP invested, according to the CIA Factbook.
For USA, Sweden, Norway, France, Denmark:
PPP per capita GDP; 47K, 38, 59, 33, 37
Percentage of GDP invested: 14%, 19, 21, 22, 22
However, the "average" US income is concentrated in the upper class, not the middle class.

The middle class is better off in every one of those other countries you mentioned.
And if the right is concerned about personal responsibility, why is that always limited to the poor and middle class. I see zero responsibility taken by the banks, zero responsibility for those who started two failed wars. It's the height of hypocrisy.
All I've learned from this thread is that America is full of paranoid conservatives that don't understand the meaning of Communism, Socialism, or the concept of efficient and fair markets. If by "socialism" you mean 'common sense fiscal conservatism' then you're right about Canada. Not one of their banks, insurance companies or investment brokerages failed during the economic crisis, and not one of them had to be bailed out. Canadians also have higher savings and lower debt than Americans, a lower per capita federal debt, and equivalent tax rates for the middle class.
There isn't anywhere in the constitution that allows congress to force the citizens to buy heallth insurance. This is crazy that our elected representatives are doing this. It's about time they realize they work for us and not the other way around.

Putting back regulation is correct path forward.
We need to keep the economy free, but yet the businesses in it responsible to least a core set of standards.
The President is taking exactly the correct approach here, but needs to address taxation next.
Next step:
We need to get back to a particular part in the era of honest conservative economics, called progressive taxation.

@shpilk The problem with regulations is that it makes an even less even playing field. The big corporations can manage to pay off politicians and regulators so that the regulations don't effect them -- small, starting businesses can't.
It's irresponsible to say that the economy tanked because of deregulation. Yes, it was one of many causes, but regulating more isn't the magic fix.

Actually, if used properly, rather than abused, the Constitution CAN protect taxpayers from fraud. Simply pass a bill that prohibits any companies or organizations that have been convicted of fraud from receiving any contracts or grants for a period of several years.
Seems simple enough.
Howevever, prohibiting a company from receiving federal funds by name, just to put on a political show is a sure fire way to have a bill overturned in court. If that was the goal (which it was), fine.

Capitalism is the private ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of goods and wealth.A free market is a market without economic intervention and regulation by government except to regulate against force or fraud. The income in sweden/norway/france/denmark is 25% lower than the US. This is because much of their economic system isnt invested in the stock market. It's invested into the government.
If we want to tax 50% the incomes will go down because the government loses money in interest on loans, while the stock market has gained 6.5% a year the last 200 years.

If by "socialism" you mean 'common sense fiscal conservatism' then you're right about Canada. Not one of their banks, insurance companies or investment brokerages failed during the economic crisis, and not one of them had to be bailed out. Canadians also have higher savings and lower debt than Americans, a lower per capita federal debt, and equivalent tax rates for the middle class.

Seriously, you're gonna rag on him about bi-partisanship? He bent over backwards to work with Republicans. They repeatedly stabbed him in the back, shaking his hand, and then going on FOX and calling him a socialist. He tried to get their support on so many things even though he didn't need it (Democrat majority remember?). That's bipartisanship.
All they did was use it as a tool against him. If the bipartisanship is dead, it's because Repubs weren't willing to compromise on anything.
