Everyone in naruto relies on ninjutsu, yes they have long range attacks but everyone uses ninjutsu..this video is the sterotypical version of a ninja. my guess is that the "flash grenade" was a weak bomb containing metsubishi blinding powder. Once thrown, the bomb would shower the vicinity with sawdust, pepper powder and coal dust. If you were unfortunate enough to have your eyes open, you would be virtually blinded for the following 8 hours.

Your Ninja can kill someone for good, and it depends on the individual ninja's own skills and your clan's bonus + chi arts development. I had a highly skilled one that was extremely deadly that I sent ahead of my armies to kill important generals / daimyo.
