  • how long do they take to grow

  • You're definitely right about the Expert Village thing. I don't even know why they're still around.

  • Just watching your vid for the first time. I love plants and growing them. I am doing that. 1 30 am I AM going to the pine apple. :) You video quality is good and you have good info. I will sub for sure.

  • It's been 8day and the white nubs have grew into half inch long roots all around the base. Thanks Praxx.

  • Pineapple haters, suck! Great Video.

  • My pineapple was about as fresh as yours but the roots were not as far out as yours, there were still those tiny brown things there but will it grow?

  • @TruthFromTheHeart Even the tiny brow nubs will grow into roots much of the time. Just keep it out of bright light in the beginning to allow it to take root without stress. Good luck with it! :)

  • @Praxxus55712 Bright light as in a lamp, or bright light as in the sunlight?, and also I live in a California and it gets about 56 degrees here at night, could I still leave it outside then?

  • @TruthFromTheHeart Any bright light. Keep it in a shaded area for the first week or two after planting. Then move it into a bright location.

  • @Praxxus55712 Thanks for the info, will it die if it stays in the sun?

  • @TruthFromTheHeart It has less chance of a successful transplanting if put into sunlight or bright light due to the light encouraging the leaves to grow. It can not support leaf growth with no roots. It will draw energy from older leaves, thus killing itself in the process.

  • @Praxxus55712 Alright thank you for the information

  • Awesome, found your pineapple video. Excellent!

  • Giving this a try - Jan 31 2012

    Thanks!

  • do you use any lightening for your plants?

  • My mom say pineapple plants bears fruit once. Afterwards the plant will never grow another fruit and should be trashed. Is that true. I have several plants around my home, and I'm wondering should I keep them

  • @12quillemall5321 The main plant only puts out one but mine is sending out a side shoot from the plant. I'm betting it'll produce fruit. Don't tell your mom I told you this. I don't want her hitting me with a pineapple plant. :)

  • @12quillemall5321 The plant will bear fruit three times that is useful. The first is the kind put in the store like the one in the video above. The second one is used for canning and the third is used for juice. This is because the pineapples will be smaller each time and not as sweet. You can add sugar for the canned and juiced pineapple.

  • what do you think the best weather for this is

  • It was harder to twist ours, it was more fresh and less lose maybe because I live in Maui which is where they grow them :P

  • i'm totally going to do this. million thanks

i thought you just cut it and you dont have to pluck out the leaves. actually mine had a bit of fruit around it...

hahaha i love the part with if you dont like pineapple you're a bad person. so right

    cheers again

  • Awesome information! Great stuff!

  • your right , only bad people don't eat pineapple. perhaps your on to something there. i wonder if the politicians could use some pineapples, seeing as they are ALL of them rotten to the core. excellent video. thanks.

  • Ive been looking for info. on growing pineapple...excellent!

  • lol Loved your video, my other pinapple failed since I followed direction that left some of the fruit still on, now I have to go buy another quick!

  • ok.. ive seen enough video's of people doing pinapples recently so i just had to start one today.

  • Great video! Mine and my 5 year old grandson's 1st experience growing a pineapple. So glad I watched this video. I would have done things completely wrong. So cool when you see the roots. We went step by step pausing the video so we discovered the roots before we watched that part. It was way cool. Thanks for posting.

  • Don't be fooled if your pineapple isn't as big as his in 2 months. It took me over a year to get mine that big, but also I live in cold Michigan. My pineapple almost died this summer so I threw it outside to die and it grew so healthy. Don't be afraid to leave it outside in a sunny spot all summer!

  • what does the flower look like discribe it to me please

  • @biggestphilly1 The flowers are teeny tiny purplish things located in the center of each bump of the new pineapple.

  • thanks for opening my eyes i have three very beautiful plants and cant wait for them to bloom and fruit

  • My sister is terribly allergic to pineapple. I am afraid that might mean she is a bad person, but I'm not sure. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hey Ray my pineapple plant is kind of big now how did you make yours fruit?

  • @TheProfessorex I didn't do a thing. I gave it plenty of light and a large pot for it's roots to spread out.

  • @TheProfessorex You put a clear plastic bag over the pineapple plant. Then put an apple inside the bag. The apple puts off ethylene gas. That gas will make it flower and fruit. That is if the plant is 12 to 18 months old. After it starts to flower just take off the bag and apple. It will grow a pineapple. Some times they will grow 2 smaller pineapples. That all you have to do to force it to bloom.

  • @Z71Ranger THANKS

  • Yes I googled it, its true !

  • "Bad people don't like pineapple" LOLOLOLOL

  • i feel dumb for this, but does the pineapple plant die after harvesting the pineapple, does it stop produceing, or does it just keep on going?

  • @raceismendnow I've heard the plant will not produce again after fruiting but I believe it will live and produce more fruit.

  • @raceismendnow the plant will prodoce new ones from what ive read. i'am currently trying to grow one where 6 of them have grown sucessfuly

  • @raceismendnow and i would recomend buying a crow that is green and not damaged check the middle before buying it and if you could pull it right of that is no good pick a different one.

  • Inside what?

  • May be a dum question but will it produce fruit?

  • @1TacticalMedic Yep it did. I harvested and ate it last week. :)

  • @Praxxus55712 You better not have ate that pineapple we've been watching grow for so long OFF camera!! LOL :P

  • whats a good ratio for sand and compost??

  • @darienaybar I use approx 1/4 sand, 1/4 peat moss or potting mix and half compost.

  • i was like o_o

    then i was like -_-

    then he said ninja knives

    then i was like O_O

then I went to the grocery store.

  • Haha! I actually went on googling "bad people don't like pineapple"...

  • for some reason i can't seem to grow one of these, i've tried planting it straight off the fruit and i've tried soaking it to stimulate some more root growth but for some reason i can't seem to get it to work :( i don't think heat is an issue because i can grow mangoes and mandarin oranges just fine in here...anyone have any suggestions? :)

  • @teleman587063 Are you giving it sunlight?

  • @Praxxus55712 i've tried in the shade and under a heat lamp, the first time it just rotted away cause i think i got some water in the centre, but this time the leaves are staying green...just no roots are growing

  • @teleman587063 Wow, are you saying that you can grow mango and mandarin oranges indoors?...

  • @GetDamage I didn't know that was possible... :) I gotta try this next year.

  • @GetDamage for some reason i still can't get pineapples to grow though, they just keep dying...im a pineapple killer :(

  • @GetDamage as long as you have the space and heat, my grow closet is around 30-35 degrees celcius, my mangoes are in room temperature

  • Thanks

  • It's ok! When's the next video?

  • The proof is in the pineapple.

  • Do you have any gardening books that you reccomend? Can you give the author?

  • @Incredibleisaac2 I don't read gardening books. Sorry I can't help ya with that.

  • i never know about that O__O

    thanks :D

  • How often should I water it?

  • @Amphiprionic Water it when the soil starts to dry out.

  • @Praxxus55712

    hey

i have tried what u have explained here 3 times 2 times there was roots on the top but not the 3. time.

i twisted off the top and placed it in a glass with water near a sunny winsow... andmy only result was a top turning brown and no roots was growing at all??

    HELP!

  • @bjarke1000 Keep it out of the sun. Sunlight will force it to want to grow leaves, which it can't do until it grows roots. Trying to grow leaves will drain it's resources and kill it. Keep it in a shaded location for a couple of weeks or so until the roots grow, then give it light.

  • @Praxxus55712

thank u so much :) now i wanna try again :D

    btw love ur vid :D

  • Wow! I loved this vid. You gave so many details and I appreciate that. I actually purchased a pineapple for $1.96 yesterday for the sole purpose of regrowing the top part. Don't worry, we will eat what's leftover too ; ) One question: Wouldn't it be advantageous to put the root part in water for a while before planting to sort of jump start the new root growth. Perhaps adding root stimulating stuff would help too. Thanks for the vid!

  • @Marsx4 Dole really should pay me to be their spokesman. :)

Yep you can use the glass of water method. I prefer using soil because it's less work than changing the water. Yes I am JUST that lazy.

  • Hi there! I'm trying this today! OMGosh, I'm going outside and remove that slice of Pineapple I left on the bottom. The roots under the leaf is cool! Thxs for the info! Oh I live in SOCAL (Anaheim) do you think I can leave it outdoors?

  • @FreidasGarden I think southern California is probably warm enough to grow it outdoors all year. Go for it! :)

  • Hi there! I'm trying this today! OMGosh, I'm going outside and remove that slice of Pineapple I left on the bottom. The roots under the leaf is cool! Thxs for the info!

  • Hi there! I'm trying this today!

  • I love your video! I started this process back in june and it started growing, but now it has stopped. I live in Wisconsin, so I guess it is not the best place to grow a pineapple. lol I water it once a week and it gets sun. IDK what I am doing wrong.

  • @AllisChalmersD19 The plant will stop at times to rest. Mine do this during winter when the sunlight coming through the window is weaker. No problem though. Keep it barely watered and let it rest for the winter. In spring, give it a little fertilizer and it'll kick back into gear.

  • @AllisChalmersD19 if it's winter it will slow its growth rate and increase back in the summer it will also look better heath wise

  • Great video! Thanks :)

  • Great vid. Pictures say a thousands words!

  • PINECEPTION

  • Bad people DONT like pineapple. True. I just started mine so hopefully it takes off. P.S. this is the best video that I have found by far. Thanks.

  • Hi, I tried pulling out the green leaves but there were no roots at all in mine :(

I bought my pineapple from Costco. Don't buy Costco pineapples if you want to do this.

  • bad people don't like pineapple .......... sucks to be you hahaaa funny!

  • how often do you water it?

  • @LuvHealthNConception I water it when the soil dries out. The amount of time varies with heat, light and the speed that the plant is growing.

  • @Praxxus55712 thanks :)

  • can i put it out in sommer??

  • do you think putting it in a glass of water in the beginning is a good idea???? there are some videos that tell me to do that...

    but i dont trust THEM

  • @jcpn222 A glass of water will definitely work. Make sure you change the water every couple of days to keep it from developing fungus. Also don't use chlorinated water. If you have chlorined water, let it set in a container overnight at room temp before using it. Put your top in there with the bottom 2 inches set in water. Put in a shaded area. No direct sunlight while it's rooting. After your top sprouts roots, plant it in soil, set it in a shaded area for a few days and then in a sunny window.

  • you are freaking awesome

  • can you do this in hydroponics

  • @minecraftg81 I'm betting this can be done in hydroponics. I'd love to see it done if anyone wants to post a video response.

  • I haven't seen your channel before but I think I should subscribe!

  • Genius! Love the unconventional approach!

  • Hi Praxxus! I am super psyched to start growing my pineapple!! I started by twisting off my crown and removing the bottom leaves, but some of the fruit came off when I removed the crown. I know when fruit remains attached, it can cause rot when you go to plant it. There isn't much of it attached, but should I cut it off anyway or is it ok to keep it on there? Thanks for the video and your help!

  • @kstern2000 Trim it off if possible. It won't hurt the roots since the roots are under the leaves.

  • @Praxxus55712 Thank you so much for your quick response :) I'm going to get to trimming right now!

  • Hi Praxxus55712 I really enjoy your videos, and have recently started growing pineapples as well.

Have you encountered a pineapple top with the tender new growth cut out?

  • @JBSpringer1 I heard some growers will have the center growing area cut or pulled out of their pineapples to keep their product from being propagated elsewhere. I think that's a bit nutty and extreme but yep I've heard that it's been done. Weird huh?

  • i love ur sense of humor, :) subbbbbbbd!!!!!!!

  • My son and I are trying this at home and he told his science teacher what we are doing. She thinks it would be a good science project for him to do, would you mind us making our own video using your method. We would give you credit as a reference, of course. Love your videos!

  • @littlefoo20 Go for it! Have fun and I hope he gets extra credit for it. :)

  • Awesome!!! thanx for showing the world how to plant and grow fruit :)

    Keep the videos coming !!

  • Mine has been planted for 2 months and it has just started to lay out it's leaves like 3 weeks ago but I not intentionally cut off that part but its growing and feels securevand stuff

  • dude! that's awesum! :D

  • I cut the top off of mine and left it sitting in a bowl of water for a week and a half on my stove then when it was still green after that time and i noticed it starting to gather mold i planted it in a large planter with store bought potting soil it's been almost 2 years now and no fruit or flower yet but PLENTY of large strong new leaves. I keep it inside in the winter and put it outside during the summer.

  • You are awesome.

  • I dont need intervention I need to sell all my small ones and just keep my 3 big ones I have since some are doing something odd with growing more out the sides

  • Wow love your videos :D This one is particularly interesting because I love pinnaples :D I might try to grow a tree out of one soon but with fall around the corner, and because I live in Quebec, Canada, you think it can work?

Btw I found your videos because I was searching for tips from growing a avocado tree, have your even grown one?

  • @technogotika You can grow these any time of the year if you're growing them indoors. Mine grow even in the winter, which is snowy and bitter cold outside. The sunlight coming in the window is more than enough to keep them alive and happy.

ps: I've grown an avacado tree before. I might try again if I find a good pit and have the space. My house is filling with plants faster than I had planned. :)

  • Hey I posted a video of my pineapple plant after two days I was wondering if any body that knows about pineapple plants could look and comment thank you

  • How much water do I give mine ???

  • Hi Ray,

Just planted my 2nd pineapple yesterday, after the first one got moldy at the bottom. Today I see this one has also got some mold at the lower leaves. Does this mean my pineappleplant is going to die? And do you know any way of preventing this?

BTW I didn't give the plant any water yet, since the soil (mixed with sand) was still a bit moist.

    Thanks Already!

  • @thijsaldus It's impossible to know where the mold came from. Keep the soil moist but not soggy and keep the plant out of direct sunlight for a couple of weeks. It should root by then. After that, set it in the brightest location. Direct sunlight usually keeps mold in check.

  • @Praxxus55712 Thanks for the answer! I'm keeping it out of the sun (not that there is much here in the Netherlands), but i'm just wondering why that helps?Especially if direct sunlight keeps the mold in check when the plant has rooted.

And what do you think about using vinegar? I heard it could get rid of the mold, but maybe it can also get rid of my plant as well ?! :-P

  • @thijsaldus I suggest leaving it out of direct sunlight for the first couple weeks after planting it because if it's in direct sunlight, it will try to grow. Being without roots, it will take the energy it needs from the leaves it has. This will kill the leaves, which will in turn kill the plant. It needs shade until it puts down roots. After a couple weeks it should have it's roots and can draw what it needs from them and not the leaves.

  • so cool thank you

  • are you white or hispanic ??? mabye mexican or from italy ? what are you ??? native american ???

  • @unitedstateskingdom Yes, thanks for asking. :)

  • @Praxxus55712 can i grow them in september

  • @unitedstateskingdom I grow them indoors year round. If you grow them indoors you can grow them anytime.

  • @Praxxus55712 what temature ?? and can you do it for mangos too

  • @unitedstateskingdom Regular house temps are fine. I can't say how to grow mangos since I haven't grown one yet.

  • So it seems like the leaves in the center of my plant are rotting and the few leaves in the center are easily pulled out. is that a sign of rotting? i followed you instructions and stuck it in soil after i pulled it off the pineapple. thanks

  • @ctran503 I hate to say it but that generally means the plant didn't make it. Don't give up though! Once you get one to root and grow, it's going to grow fast and look great.

  • DUDE THAT IS COOL!!!! =D

  • This is so nice! I wonder if you can do this when cold season is coming, I mean, does your plant resists winter?

  • Well sir you got me, I don't like pineapple. Your fact stays true, as I am not a nice person. But I will be trying this planting method eventually.

  • I <3 <3 <3 PINEAPPLE!!!

  • @guitargczr699 You cant love pineapples as much as me I got this idea from him to grow them and I somehow ending up doing 8 of them at once thinking most would fail and that back fired on me and all 8 of them lived and 4 of them turned to be monster sized and the others just grow slower due to the small pots there in.

  • @wotldthe2006 haha that's awesome!

  • @guitargczr699 Well I take it back I got 9 now one just started to grow another pineapple out its side now I got 9 I have no idea where they will go but thank god its only a small one

  • @wotldthe2006 Ok it's intervention time. :)

  • Thanks for the very informative video. I think I will have my 7th graders do this for the year.

  • @ng31200 I don't know what help you want from me. If your pineapple top is forming roots then that's excellent. There's no way to speed it up or increase it once it's started the process. Just give it time.

  • Hey my friend planted a pineapple but didn't pull the leaves like you said it's already in dirt and we saw some changes but will it still put out roots.

  • @kjsfirefighter I don't know. I've never tried it without yanking off the leaves. I'd say there's a good chance it will be ok. Just keep it out of durect sunlight for a little while until it seems like it's starting to grow.

  • (cont)

Also should it be in direct sunlight right away or just inside to start. Thanks for the videos they are very informative and entertaining.

  • @heylawnguy I would leave the plant totally alone until green growth starts showing in the center. Then it's ok to trim the dead leaves back a bit but be careful not to jostle the plant. This could disturb the roots. Keep it out of direct sunlight until it starts showing some new growth. This may take a few weeks. Sometimes it will just die for no reason. Don't give up. Try again ok? I've had one die too. It just happens.

  • Hi Ray, I recently discovered your videos and channel and have been obsessed with all things praxxus ever since. I watched this grow a pineapple video and decided to give it a try, and as it so happened dole pineapples were on sale this week. I followed your easy instructions and am now at day three. The pineapples leaves are all turning brown as you stated in the video. Should I be trimming the brown parts off this early into the planting or wait until new growth starts popping up. Also shoul

  • Also if you know of anymore cool stuff like pineapple plants we can do inside please let us know!

  • Thank you so much for teaching us! That is so cool. After watching your video I went and bought 4 pineapples and planted all 4! I am so glad I watched your video. My friend's boyfriend bought her a pineapple plant and I wanted it soooo bad but I couldn't find one anywhere. Someone at a plant shop told me to grow my own but I had no idea how. I looked it up on youtube and the 1st video made it look like a long hard process but yours didn't. Thank you so much!

  • @ambergerringer You planted 4?? LOL Holy cow you are going to have a forest of pineapple plants if they all survive. The cool part is at last one should make it. Keep it out of direct sunlight for the first few weeks or so until new green growth shows up. Then you'll know it rooted. Good luck and have fun with it. I hope they produce pineapples for you. :)

  • Awesome! So exited to this, i probably didnt pay attention, but temperature wise, could i grow it outside? I live in southern california, temp is usually 90- 110 during the day...

  • @JudyinMarte I'd be willing to bet you could grow a pineapple outdoors easily in Southern California year round if it doesn't frost in the winter. Go for it! :)

  • @Praxxus55712

Ray i just went out to buy air pump for compost tea, on my way back i entered my local farmers market. guess what i found for dirt cheap price ? pineapple.

The guy was selling 8 pineapple for £2.00 it was way too many pineapple for me but as it happened a Chinese woman walked and asked for the price before he could answer i told her, then she asked if there is anyone willing to share i said me, she gave me £1.00 with my £1.00 we bought 8 and shared 5 for me 3 for her.

  • (cont)

So why i'm i telling you this you ask ?

Well i remembered this video and i just planted one ( following your instruction)

i just hope i get better result than the tomato.

  • @theracemixer You should plant them all to make sure one takes root. Sure beats tossing it away. I would have snagged all of them, cut them up and froze them for winter. Nothing cheers me up like pineapple in the winter!

  • @Praxxus55712

Its raining now, i'll pot the rest tomorrow or when the rain stops. You know the last time i potted more seeds than i needed we both know what happened : )

I don't think freezing fruit is required, my local farmers market is only 100 yards from my house.

any my local supermarket is 20min walk from my house thus i can get fruits all year round flown around the world. Mind prices are sure going high.

  • 9 people have stock in pineapple farms and are angered at the free pineapples

  • @dionkar336 Dole employees maybe? :)

  • @Praxxus55712

Probably, seeing as Dole has recently jacked up their pineapple prices to $5-8 a pineapple. Sell a couple thousand at that price, you are making lots of money. By helping us grow our own, you are seriously undermining the pineapple business!

And for that, I thank you

  • @dionkar336 lol

  • Awwwww I so want to do this, though as much as I love pineapple I think I`m developing an allergy ..... it makes the back of my throat itch when I eat it and my hands itch if I handle it .... Poop

Perhaps when I have quest over it will give me the excuse to buy a pineapple so I can grow one .... it makes a really interesting looking plant!

    Thanks again for your videos

I hope this doesn`t make me a bad person :P

  • @blackraven1515 Naw you're not bad at all. Even if you can't eat pineapple it's really a fun plant to grow. It's a fantastic conversation piece. People ask what it is and when you tell them they take a double take and say things like "You're kidding! Really? That's so cool! Give me your wallet!" and other fun comments. :)

  • @blackraven1515

I have good news! You are NOT allergic to pineapple. The itching is normal, as pineapples contain bromelin, which breaks down proteins. Anyway, pineapples contain chemicals that are irritants in larger doses. Just limit how much pineapple you eat at once and you will be fine. :)

  • @dionkar336 Thanks! Thats cool to know ... I found that cooked pineapple is generally ok and if I eat only a piece or to im generally ok as well but I would worry that the more often I ate pineapple the worse it would get!

I suppose it would be ok to indulge now and then :)

  • THANK YOU!!!!

  • if I search anything on Youtube I always end up getting back to you

not saying it is a bad thing.

  • @johnburton799 That sounds sort of scary. LOL

  • @Praxxus55712 scary but true

I am trying to grow a pineapple and it has roots.

  • Love this! I will be trying this ASAP! Is there any special indoor lighting you have set up for your indoor plants?

  • @Violet1974 I built a makeshift cfl lighting fixture. There's a video somewhere on my channel that shows how. Works like a charm! :)

  • do i grow inside or outside

  • I bought another pineapple tonight. When i peeled back i found roots just as you said. I am not sure why the other one didn't initially have roots, but we will see. I figure i might need 2 for polination?

  • @crochunter627 Mine produced a fruit and I never saw a flower. How odd is that??

  • @Praxxus55712 Thats really interesting. Perhaps i don't need it after all? Well, I need an excuse to have two because maybe secretly I think these plants are just really cool. :)

  • This may sound weird but I just noticed your voice kinda sounds like Tom Hanks.

  • @12349876danielle LOL I gotta take this as a total compliment because I am a Tom Hanks fan. :)

"Momma always said life was like a box of pineapples..........."

  • I am currently growing tumbler tomatoes, sweet genovese basil and courgettes in pots so this should be a great addition. Thankyou I really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to watching all your other videos, as I explore growing plants more and more.
