This is my favorite sailing video perhaps because of the music and speed of the boat but the technical comments below are interesting that I must read up on them. I've only sailed hobbie cats and recently a 35' sailing boat but this looks pretty fast cutting through the waves like it does.

It's the foil on the keel that lifts the boat's hull/water line above the water reducing drag and increasing speed.

@jbarrystan The keel foil actually has very little hydrodynamic effect. As a canting keel, the primary function of the keel fin is to support hanging a very heavy bulb to windward. The dagger boards that the VO70's have are what keep the boats going straight.

As far as the lift and how they fly, these boats are built with reaching in mind. there are ballast tanks in the aft quarters to help move weight. Also the boats are built with a higher volume in the bow to avoid burying of the nose.

Well, that's not totally true. The latest Maxis derive some of their technology from VO70s but the 70s are a specialist boat. They are optimised more for reaching and running whereas Maxis have to be good on a beat.

The flip side is that maxis should be faster because of their much greater waterline length. It's possible to imagine the 615nm Sydney-Hobart being done in a 24 hr period or less. I think this will happen eventually but I don't know when. There are many variables.

well though most of the technology is derived from the Vo 70's many of the maxi's IE "Maximus" boats take the concepts to the next level, and while they are faster due to the waterline length, their proportions are also different, a maxi has to be able to perform the same ability downwind, and combine that with an ability to charge upwind, which in my opinion makes them a superior machine by far

While the Maxi's have many virtues and benefit from the addition of hydralic winches etc etc, it is lacking in one key area in my opinion....it has not lapped the world.

The Maxi is the dream because she is polished and stabled then treated to the odd sprint.

The Volvo 70 is treated similarly then laps the world at a canter.

The VO70s are quite different from the 60s. They are actually about 1000kg lighter and carry no water ballast. They have a canting keel anyway. They also have lighter materials for the rig meaning that it has less inertia and doesn't slam, making the boat more sea-kindly and quite bit faster. The 60s were good for up to 485nm/day but Ericsson 4 set a new world record of 602 in the last race.

This is amazing because catamarans only got over 600nm/day in 2000.

Yes but far less so and this is evident by the fact that they don't suffer from delamination to the same degree as before. I realised this after I posted. The boats tend to plow through waves rather than falling off them and this is a function of lower weights in the ends. It has been a target of designers for decades, even during the IOR period. Boats with low weights in the ends are faster and the new rules, which allowed for new materials made the boats faster and more seaworthy.

Unless there are two Pumas, Puma is actually ABN AMRO2 repainted. On the basis of what you are saying, I think there must be two.

I don't know where Pirates is. You can see detail differences if youve got an eye for detail. Puma is a Kouyoumdjian design. Pirates is a Farr.

That race they used vo70 for the first time, since the race 08-09 Delta Lloyd was one of the boats that raced in the 05-06 and what I know, since I worked with the race, is that Delta Lloyd is a 70. Hot Diggedy Damn--YES--how fast were they making and could they have a little more sheet up!!? I've watched this 7xs now and that boat was surfing!! The front third was clear on some occasions. If memory serves, this video was shot off the coast of Austrailia. The Black Pearl was doing 38 knots. That's about 45 MPH! You could water ski behind the boat (if you could survive the waves)...
