This wasn't written to be funny. It was one of the last really introspective songs written by Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, after his marriage failed, the band broke up & pressure of being the one writing almost every song, etc. It drove him to heroin & death (and childhood was hard as one of the few black Irishmen from Dublin to be born to a young unwed mother in 1949). The Corrs do a great job singing this, but it isn't supposed to be happy- "This boy is cracking up; this boy is broken down."
