i rather use hich pass filtering to recover those tones back wich were down fitered by the lowpass filter inside the snes.
trough the lowpass filter can deliver great bass sound but the hich tones will be eliminated.
it would,ve be great if it was possible to amplifier the hich tones for the 5 speakers but filter out the low tones, whereas for the subwofer i wish to only amplifie the low tones but filter out the hch tones, for theoritically delivering the best 5,1 surround ever!!!!
Nice - best advice ever - to carve away the low-end from instruments that don't need it. Cleaned up my mixes a ton and let the "real" bass shine through where it was needed.
Bro, can we get more vids from you in particular??? I find it very easy to grasp the stuff that you teach, your explanations on whats going on, and why, are clear and precise... If you have more vids on Youtube please post a link... Thanks
I recorded a sit down interview with an older woman telling her life story. I had a wireless lav on her, but I forgot to plug it in until 1/2 way through a 2 hour interview. So I have 1 hour of really bad audio from the camera mic. It's there, and it's audible, but it's pretty bad and I have to assume I won't have the chance to re-do the interview. Any tricks using EQ or Gain to get the audio close to the wireless (that sounds great by the way)?
Hey Bro this question has nothing to do with this video lol but is there any possible way to use my VST plugins in Pro Tools 9? Because i have a shit tone of awesome VST plugins (Over 1,000 no joke) that i dont want to just let go to waste.. I was a 100% Logic junkie until i tried PT9 lol.... Let me know ASAP PLEASE
Very good tutorial! I usually find that "sound" people are either reluctant, impatient, or just plain terrible at communicating stuff like this. Total CLARITY!
Do you have any advice on guitars being "out of phase?"
I'm a beginner, but I can learn quickly when things are explained this well.
I'm using cubase, but I can understand the general process easily enough, if I'm shown it in other programs.
@andrewarbogast1 It applies to everything that needs it, but only use this technique AFTER you understand the relation of the instruments to the original mix first. Once you have an idea what is doing the cluttering, then you can start to single out tracks and start EQ sweeping what you need to. Generally, guitars and anything you'd have to pan should have a high pass filter to keep it from muddying the bass guitar, kick and vocal (stuff that isn't panned)
@mendel621 If you're using the stock eq, pull up eq8 and you'll see that you can determine which node you want to put the Hpf on (usually the either the first (furthest to the left) node). You can also of course set a Lpf as well (again usually furthest node to the right (to cut the high's)).
Also, fyi, if you click on the vst you can turn hi quality on/off...which makes this eq sound even "better"!
I already knew all these things but I really appreciated that video, I viewed it entirely and taught me that I wasn't the only crazy person filtering out my lows everywhere :)
Hi. I have recorded vocals and acoustic and etc with sm57 there are lots and really2 alot of background noise.. is there any possible solution to mute or lower down the background noise . i also did tried to recorded with low gain for the mic but when i max my volume the background noise still can be heard VERY2 clear
. When you are recording, try putting a noise gate on your mic. What this does is cuts out exterior sound under a certain volume and records what is above a certain volume. It should easily pick up your voice and guitar if you are standing anywhere near your mic. But yeah, try putting noise gate on your mic. That should do the trick. Hope I helped.
Very important and valuable tip! When I found out about this it was like I had found the holy grail :-) Your explanation is top notch! I guess we're going to be seeing a lot of you :-)
I'm using Audacity. Which sucks, because it does two things: when I'm recording, it adds very quiet sort of clicks, NOT like a metronome. And secondly, when I'm recording a second track ofver the first, it has gaps in it so it goes out of time more and more as it goes on.
Thanks, I kind of already knew that. (Wow, that's ahrd to say without sounding bitchy!)I was just expressing my frustration that I can't afford better.
I agree with jonsie7 and the clicks could be from your computer not having enough power or possibly from your internal harddrive being too slow.
Your problem MAY be fixable with the stuff you already have but, at worst, with about a $100 investment you could get the issues cleared up.
The one nice thing about a lot of low-cost recording interfaces is that they come with a lot of trial software to play with! Cubase LE, Reaper, Reason LE, etc.
Wouldn't mixing all the tracks together and then cutting it out at the same frequency accomplish the same thing? Or would it mess with things that shouldn't be messed with?
I don't use any at the moment, making my own music is more of a wish than a reality.
No, it's best to cut on each channel individually because each track will be unique in what is required to cut. For example, if you have some very heavy metal guitar palm muting, you're going to WANT that low end whereas if there was an acoustic guitar in the same track (for say an intro), you probably would want just the sprarkly top of the guitar playing. Hope that clears it up.
logic studio here. (was pleasantly surprised to see logic on this channel)
good tip by the way, that's one of those things i knew about and use all the time when mixing live but have been forgetting to use when recording.
you should go a bit more into detail about carving out frequencies for the various instruments on a complex mix, and how sometimes you want to bring down parts of some to make room for others. i know about this, but that'd be a really great thing for the musicians of youtube.
This was REALLY helpful for me (and my friend). We are recording our own album right now, and we started just as this channel did (coincidentally)! All the tips so far have been amazingly useful (especially this).
Yeah, I found it pretty easy to use and we're getting the hang of it pretty quickly. I wish I had a mac and logic though. But this is good if you have a standard pc and its cheap.
I used ScreenFlow for the mac. AWESOME software. This was my first time using it (i used to use ishowU) and it's so intuitive and flexible for this sort of thing.
I just used the built in mic and webcam on my imac for this vid! If you're referring to what mics I use for recording...i have about 40 mics total. They're all useful in different ways - like different colors in a crayon box.
A really interesting video! I use Audacity for my recording because it's all I really have the money for right now. However I did just inspect the effects menu and did find a High Pass Filter option, which was a surprise :D
I think Audacity is really good and it can even run on little netbooks and stuff w/o a problem. I see that you can use vst plugins with Audacity, as well, so your choices for eqs opens up greatly! There are TONS of free vst plugins out there that sound amazing (might have to do a future vid about my favs?).

barefootfiona 2 years ago
the reason it goes out of tiem isnt the softwares fault .. its to do with your soudn card ... its called latency
its the legnth of time the audio signal takes to be processed from your mouth/mic etc.. to the Software ..
the better the sound card (wether external or internal) the lower the latency can go ...
if that made no sence feel free to ask agen :)

I haven't recorded anything with the newest version of it yet, but so far, I haven't had those problems, so maybe it's not the program.
