I tried a glass cutter on a 66x44 vanity and destroyed it! It was thick glass and whenever I tried to snap it, a crack ran across the glass! Screwed up the whole piece! DON'T try cutting thick big sheets of glass! I am so mad now...These videos are for thin glass only!
Does a diamond tipped knife work better then a wheel? I found it hard to make a neat scratch with a wheel type cutter, it was either a deep gouge (which caused chipping) or no scratch at all. The only way I got consistent results was when I covered the glass on both sides with clear packing tape and hot glued the straight edge to the tape. It would then snap cleanly with the tape still on.
both hardened steel and carbide wheel cutters work great, the carbide stays sharp longer. Though you can theoretically make a nice scratch (thats what all these tools are doing) witha diamond knife or file, it is a less controllable process. It sounds like from your descrioption that you are usign a dull tool. A new wheel cutter should, with moderate pressure, create a smooth, small, unchipped scratch. adding a cuting fluid, even kerosene, will helpminimize scratching.
. you CAN NOT use a knife,You need a glass cutter. We sell them for 20 bucks. There is more then one size glass..You have 1/16th glass which in the business we call window glass. Then you for 1/8,1/4 and 1/2. Goes thicker but you wont need it. Most common are those four. 1/4 glass is used for store fronts on and so forth then you have your Lami (laminated) if any of you guys have any questions contact me!
no you need a carbide tip because it is extremely hard and makes a deep clean cut. they also makie glass cutters with carbide wheels that roll over the glass to cut it and the you pinch it and it breaks
I bought myself about 500 piece tool set for the dremel, im very into starting stained glass designing now, can i use my dremel for this project as well as other glass designing?
