I read the book: most overrated 300 pages of Canadian-leftist garbage I have ever read. Same thing I've seen spewing from Canada and MSNBC, religon baa-a-a-ad. 1984 was what would happen if the extreme left took over, Handmaid is the extreme right. Both extremes are wrong.

I just got done watching this movie on Encore. I tivoed it, it was CRAZY weird, and i can't believe it was made 20 years ago!! I'm very thankful it is not like that here....or anywhere i hope not. It showed the illuminati sign at the end and a few times in teh movie too. I gotta have my daughter watch this weird one. Elizabeth McGovern is a great attress, is she still around?

I read so many referances to that. Sex for bribery etc... What utter bullocks. The whole tale is an essay promoting man-bashing, paranoia and self-righteousness on behalf of the author. Even the sex scene was contrived to demonstrate male dominance. At this point Atwood forgoes the option of artificial insemination to say that in the future surrogates will be raped.

But then we know this from her previous works: it just took a while for the graphic anti-male imagery to vomit to the surface.

I don't like how they did the sex ceremony at all. The book made it seem very emotionless - which the movie is as well - but with a lot less reaction from Offred. Her moaning seemed to remind us that she was having sex - whilst in the novel, it was just as normal as putting on shoes or tying your shoelaces.

The last part of the book says Caucasian people in America and Europe were having lower rates of fertility before the U.S. theocratic state emerged. The realization that white people were becoming a minority coupled with anti-feminism led to the use of fertile lower class white women as mandatory baby machines. This is very scary given the fact that every pro-life ad I see features a blue-eyed white baby and I never go 2 months without seeing a news story about "The changing face of the U.S."
