  • This was real humans, playing live...not a remastered synthesizer track to be found!

  • ENERGY!!!

  • We played this song in college at about half the speed and couldn't keep up. Maynard and his bands were the best.

  • Cocaine's a hell of a drug

  • He looks a little (just a little xD) queer... xD =D

  • @Peskunid .....and you sound a lot like a big doofus.

  • What the hell happened to Peter Erskine? I don't understand. He doesn't play with any of this aggression/intensity later on in his career.

  • I have listening to Maynard since the Kenton days and his music still gives me Chills

  • Just a short warning.....I played lead trumpet. 1972 - 1975 Milhi...Band, Wrestling and Football champs...I participated in one way or another in all three. I am a Rhodes scholar....are you absolutely sure that you want this? "Give it one" is only ONE of several songs used to screen you punks. You REALLY think you can do better than me....? Bring it! Maynard is a god...you are probably NOT.

  • One of my favourite Big Bands! And fav tunes!

  • This is Maynard's BEST band ever. When I was in high school most of our jazz band went to Slippery Rock University for one of his clinics in 1978. He was the real deal, and put on a clinic for us as if we were all his own private students. I was a 14-year old keyboard player, and he talked to me like I was a member of his band for years. He had total respect for us and where we were in our jazz journey. I miss him. The world lost a great one when he passed away.

  • I was listening to crappy bands...so i wanted to listen to amazingness.

  • SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT KIND OF MOUTHPIECE HE HAS

  • @a7xpfred He originally used a custom MF style Jettone, but switched to a Monette MF in his later years. Hope this helps.

  • who plays tenor sax @2:12?

  • @twilights4 Mark Colby

  • Did he really only have one lung or is that a myth?

  • @trumpetman309 looked it up - myth

  • at 0:50 the trumpet player starts to play with one hand... TO ADJUST HIS SUNGLASSES!!!

  • still so hard to believe he only had one lung.

  • truly amazing

  • This is WILD I just came across this video and I was actually at this concert as a teenager with all my Stage Band buddies from Western Tech. What a blast from the past.

  • Still a great example of Mastery and Generosity.

  • 13 people didn't see the drum soloist face

  • at the first part of the video i saw like ten empty seats...... why are there empty seats at his concert.... ho and he looks soooooooooooo hip nd nasty ha

  • of course the young and legendary peter Erskine!!

  • I think right after this performance, they had to mop up all the faces the band had just melted! All I can say is...HOLY &#@%!!!!

  • Maynard picked his musicians out of high school and university bands where he put on clinics

  • That is hard core music......... I want to learn to play like him

  • this is a damn hot track

  • No way these guys are human; that kind of epic music can only come from people with superpowers!

  • 12 people don't know what real music is

  • Maynard's talent didn't come out of a plastic baggy. He had his own band at 16, then was picked lead by Stan Kenton. Maynard is one of a handful of leaders who kept a touring band for over 50 years! He adapted to every jazz style: swing, bepob, latin, fusion, jazz-rock and beyon d. No other trumpeter has ever consistently matched his technical abilities.

  • @KB4QAA ALL TRUE ! AMEN !

  • I have played on MFs horn.

  • Excellent! What fun to see all these guys again in vid on YouTube! I had the pleasure of witnessing this particular line-up performing live with Maynard on many occasions... and they were truly fantastic! Such talent. (Dated Joey for a while, back in the day... LOL!)

  • SOPRANO SAXOPHONE!!!!!

  • @sandsurfer55 yea why not?

  • :O fuck. that run at 1:54 is the piff

  • Holy shit, the drummer is Peter Erskine!? I just shook the guy's hand yesterday! He came and performed with us during our Jazz Fest last night!

  • Great! MF was the best......First chair trumpeter is in disguise.....

  • Holy freakin' #^*!! That was insane! I hate that i never got to see the guy live. Thanks for posting this!

  • What a Driving Band!! Wooowww

  • Sorry bout that. Was watching another vid with Eric Traub in it...

  • Mike Migliore, alto and soprano sax ( soloist ) , Mark Colby and Eric Traub tenor sax, Bobby Millitelo Bari sax

  • 2:38 is the lowest MF has ever played in his life.

  • i'm glad i got to see him live a few times before he died

  • Wow! What a rendition. Peter Erskine, at 23, is powering the band like Buddy Rich. Who is the soprano sax player?

    Thanks, Peter

  • I saw Maynard & this same group in Denton, Texas ,at what was then North Texas State University , around '78 or '79.Got there early & sat on the front row! He opened with this same tune the same way.No matter how much you turn up the volume on your speakers , it can't compare with being there. This was absolutely the best best band he ever put together.I also agree with Brian740, this was an incredible trumpet section. I spent many an hour listening to his records(yes vinyl!) in my room.

  • 12 people are deaf no doubt.

  • 1:17 holy god! Maynard is the greek god of trumpets!

  • Holy crap...this has to be the FASTEST rendition I've this chart I've ever heard!!

  • 1:54 - Maynard 's charts challenged the musicians, the audience and most of all himself! What popular music challenges the listener today? Kids need to take risks, raid their parents record collections. Maynard was a music lover, master band leader and boundary shattering horn player. Maynard Ferguson R.I.P.

  • You never see bands play jazz like this anymore. Even the guys that try to copy it look like a bunch of stiffs. Maynard had Skills AND Style!

    Bring back Rock-Jazz!

  • soo tight! love maynard! would be living the dream to play in his band full time

  • the DRUMMER .. look liked DAVE MONNETE

  • @neody14 Haha He does! Peter Erskine looks very different now a days

  • Peter Erskine at Defon2..

    Jazz Hippies...

    That Hair!!!

  • What A TEMPO like to have been at the rehearsal when they decided it

  • those are the highest notes ive ever heard omg this is awesome its like magic that fixes the ears

  • those are the highest notes ive ever heard omg this is awesome its like magic that fixes the ears

  • those are the highest freakin notes ive ever heard omfg this is awesome

  • omg the high notes made me cry i wish i can play like him someday

  • One hell of an arrangement! WOW

  • I was lucky enought to Meet Maynard Furguson and some of the band members in Austin when I was in College. We found out he was playing at Westlake high school, and we stumbled through a door that was the stage door. They invited us to sit front row and then hang with them as they packed up. We of course helped out. Great experience.

  • sick @ 2:10... Maynard was such a educational force in music in the 70-80s that without him I would have not continued to play music. What a motivator and one of a kind mother!

  • Damn,Peter Eskine went the hell off didn't he?

I wonder if he looks @these post and say, "what the hell happen?"

  • That was f 'ing frantic, baby.....great stuff.

    R.I.P. Maynard

  • I've just found my favourite youtube video!

  • This is about the time I first saw MF live. Changed my musical life.

  • Makes me laugh when I hear people who record with drum machines, samples, synths and Melodyne saying that they're "keeping it real"........

My friends...it doesn't get any more real than this WHAT A BAND......as for Mr Erskine on the drums................THIS IS THE REAL DEAL

  • Maynard always played this song fast at this point in time. After MF was introduced over "Blue Birdland", the band would immediately launch into "Give It One" at break neck speed to pump up the audience. And it sure as hell did.

  • Oh yeah- MF was king of the stage, no doubt about it. I got to split lead with him on one tune at the end of our jazz festival in 1982. What an honor that was then and a memory I'll cherish all my days.

    Rest in peace buddy-

  • RIP Maynard .... this man was a trumpet hero. He hit a high note or two, didn't he? I remember taking my daughter to see him in Tampa ... her reaction was similar to the first time I took her to the NHRA TOP FUEL (which shakes the ground). Maynard was THE MAN!

  • RIP Maynard .... this man was a trumpet hero. He hit a high note or two, didn't he? I remember taking my daughter to see him in Tampa ... her reaction was similar to the first time I took her to the NHRA TOP FUEL (which shakes the ground).

  • Oh man this is brain melting, no need for MJ after listening to this song, actually you always do. Peace!

  • My brass coach said she talked to Maynard when she was a sophomore in high school. He said the reason why he got all of that air was because he did a bunch of Yoga breathing excercises.

  • 12 people are homo sexual ... thumbs up

  • sssuuuuuuuuuuupeeeeeeerr!!!!!

  • Why the fuck are there EMPTY SEATS!!!

  • Their hair gave them superpowers on the trumpet

  • @TheChaseair well im glad i have an afro lol

  • @TheChaseair - Hilarious! True, and hilarious.

  • @TheChaseair and their sideburns. thats where 80% of superpowers come from man

  • at 0:19 those people must had partial hearing loss from MF horn.

  • @robux1 I had the honor of seeing Maynard live and he did hurt my ears a little. But, it was a good kind of hurt like when you have a sore in your mouth and you can't stop biting it. It was like AAAAAH Hit it Maynard! (ouch. fuck yeah)

  • While a small mouthpiece like a "Jet Tone" might assist in adding a small boost in range, it would tear up your chops over time and limit the sound you can get. High range comes from a combination of fast air that is blown not pushed, a large mouthpiece (not too large) to let the airstream through and some natural ability, (embrochure control).

  • @KCJazzKeys not to mention a load of practice.

  • @KCJazzKeys Hmmm...large mouthpiece?...sounds like you play trombone or something... ;) I had a feeling it was you before I even looked at your profile, Paul. lol

I agree with you on air, but you can tear your chops up on any mouthpiece if you're playing incorrectly. Also, everyone's physiology is different so mouthpiece size is subjective...but, if you're playing very efficient, then you'll be able to sound good on a smaller mouthpiece (as I found after taking lessons w/ Bobby Shew). :)

  • Pure talent on steroids .

  • @alohatravel1: His horn was a Holton (not Holden). FWIW

  • Sh*t that is fast and Peter Erskine kicks the band throughout. I think this is Maynard at his peak. He nails all the high notes. Great band on a great chart!

  • I saw him for the first time in Seattle as a high school freshman (1977, I think the same year as this performance). If you could only have seen this band live, WOW!! You ALWAYS cleared your schedule when Maynard came to town. BTW, the mouthpiece is a Jet-Tone, a personal Maynard design, and his trumpet was made by a company called Holden, and was also designed by him. Trumpet players walked out of a Maynard show with a boner a mile long.

  • ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice soprano solo

  • what kind of mouthpiece and trumpet is he using?

  • Sweet Jesus! At that speed, the song should have lasted only a minute! Check out our version, played at a more normal (what is normal?) speed...

  • i wish i could have learned how to play trumpet from him =o

  • Maynard Is the best

  • Maynard Is the best friends

  • Its not only the intensity from the speed or even stunning high notes but also Maynards "tone" at those high notes.

  • what a speed!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!

  • Groovy

  • GOOSEBUMPS!!!

  • @kimani69870 Probably. My dad looks like that back when he was in his 20's. (My dad grew up in the 50's and 60's) It just made everyone awesome from that time. :P

  • pete eriskin be killin them drums! damn!

  • Manyard Ferguson is a terrible example for trumpet players... I love it :)

  • @JazzManXIII totally true but who cares!? he kicks ass

  • 0:52 the trumpet player. Inside the trumpet guys head "Yeah let me adjust my glasses while playing a crazy hard lick....I wonder what the wife is making for dinner..." =)

  • Ah, yes - the famous Jet Tone buzz in the lower register. Meh.

  • @elviswasSTRUNGOUT "Jet tone" -probably the best description I've heard of his sound

  • @MightySaturn5 I kinda prefer "Laser tone." But both "jet" and "laser" do well. A thick focused beam of piercing, screaming sound. Awesome!

  • @Dlectronic lol, I kind of like that too...have a great day

  • jeez, how slick is Peter Erskine's fill at 2:05

  • oh yeah... crazy slick. you must be a drummer to pick that out and appreciate it

  • @trane1959 oh yeah... crazy slick. you must be a drummer to pick that out and appreciate it

  • @speze859 thanks, not a drummer though

  • also notice the pelvis thrust on the high notes lol

  • This is my second cousin by marriage.

  • wow.... that piece was burnin'.....

  • Every time I need a shot of energy I pull up this video. It's better than Red Bull AND Monster!

    Nothing like the MF Band!

  • he gots the cooolest tone ...cant stop listening....pull me back....sooo good.

  • They're playing this SO fast. I think I prefer the slower version on the LP. Still - good stuff!

  • You just don't hear music of this caliber that often. Wow.

  • This was "The Boss" as I heard and remember him and his best band, numerous times at my High School (Rocky Mount Senior High in North Carolina)

and surrounding venues (NC State, East Carolina Univ., ect..) at the height of his popularity and influence. I was a Clarinet major my 1st year majoring in Music, but taught myself Trumpet on the side, and was soon playing Maynard's charts as Lead in our College JazzBand. Why? Because I HAD too.

Today, at 51 years old, I play better and higher than ev

  • fuck yeah

  • It's so hard to believe it been almost 4 years since Maynard passed away. I still have trouble accepting it. There is a reason we all love him so much, and it's not just his incomparable playing.

  • @bimmerfun The phenomenal Maynard will live forever in the hearts of his family anf friends through great clips like these !

  • I never had the chops ( ebouchure) for screaming. but I could keep tempo. 1979

  • I saw this band in '77 in Houston. Peter Erskine absolutely killed it on the drums, gave like a 10-minute solo I'll never forget. A year later he was already with Weather Report. Man.

  • rest in peace glad i saw him live memories will last a life time

  • i' sitting here totally speechless... wow... Maynard was a great showman, too

  • I wonder if the hair gave these people super powers with their instruments. Oh, I hate Toronto....

  • @DasWuddItB That made him affordable to many organizations. And that is what he wanted. To bring his music to as many as possible. I booked him and brought him to my old HS twice. Don't think I could do that with the Phat Band. $7500 -vs- $25000.

  • No one and I mean no one comes close to his showmanship and his musical abilities...He's the Master Blaster!!!!

  • What is the last note? a Double G?

  • @saxdrummer92 Double A

  • Stan Mark--in those days was Gods own lead trumpet player--brilliant!

  • Comment removed

  • just found out my university marching band is playing this in the fall 2010!! im totally stoked! :)

  • There's nobody like "the boss"...forever and ever

  • Maynard is Maynard...

  • Peter Erskine = Animal from Sesame Streat? I'm just sayin' !

  • @catfishsteve didn't you see animal play with buddy rich, he was not a very good drummer.

  • @selector111 ; this is true, it was more of a visual, I guess. Peter Erskine is amazing!!

  • DAM GOOD!!!

  • hell yes! this IS MUSIC!!!!!

  • KICK ASS!!!

  • Peter Eriskin was killing those drums.

  • omg hes amazing. i met him! hes my inspiration to keep practicing trumpet

  • Peter Eriskin on drums.Great

  • @beagleman123456789 I didn't realize that was Peter Eriskin. Have you heard the tune "Pete is a four letter word" by Stan Kenton? Find it, play it.

  • Amazing how high he can play no matter how hard i practice still cant hit most of those notes aha

  • "Streets of Jazzfrancisco". Great big band jazz from that era. Maynard was a one-off at any time on the road of jazz.

  • Does this vid seem oddly fast to any one else? I've never heard this song played at this tempo.

  • @Richterscale : of course, they're showing off!

  • cooking!!

  • Mark Colby on tenor sax

  • I've heard that there is and album that both maynard and urbie green appeared on...can anyone confirm or disaffirm this?

  • This tune is really fast!!! That is beast!!! Go Maynard!! Keep on playing!!!

  • He's dead dude!

  • Wow. Way to ruin the moment.

  • @jailermark lol!

  • Thanks for posting this video. I stumbled on it by accident. I was at this concert as a participant in the festival (I was in grade 10 a the time) and it changed the way I viewed jazz - it was a blast.

  • Great trumpet one of the best of al time!!!!

Hirt wil always be the best though

  • awesome band. Try playing the pep band arransgement. Killer!

  • this was before the drummer charlie manson got arrested i take it

    maynard rocks

  • heheheh he's my music teacher in my school now pretty cool

  • I think Maynard's best trumpet section was the one a few years ealier with Lynn Nicholson, Don Hahn & Stan Mark. This one was also quite good. Nicholson was a monster.

  • Hellz ya

  • This song was used as Wheel of Fortune's pilot theme back in 1974 with Ed Byrnes and Susan Stafford.

  • That soprano sax solo was badass.

  • he only breathes about twice
