Just a short warning.....I played lead trumpet. 1972 - 1975 Milhi...Band, Wrestling and Football champs...I participated in one way or another in all three. I am a Rhodes scholar....are you absolutely sure that you want this? "Give it one" is only ONE of several songs used to screen you punks. You REALLY think you can do better than me....? Bring it! Maynard is a god...you are probably NOT.
This is Maynard's BEST band ever. When I was in high school most of our jazz band went to Slippery Rock University for one of his clinics in 1978. He was the real deal, and put on a clinic for us as if we were all his own private students. I was a 14-year old keyboard player, and he talked to me like I was a member of his band for years. He had total respect for us and where we were in our jazz journey. I miss him. The world lost a great one when he passed away.
This is WILD I just came across this video and I was actually at this concert as a teenager with all my Stage Band buddies from Western Tech. What a blast from the past.
at the first part of the video i saw like ten empty seats...... why are there empty seats at his concert.... ho and he looks soooooooooooo hip nd nasty ha
Maynard's talent didn't come out of a plastic baggy. He had his own band at 16, then was picked lead by Stan Kenton. Maynard is one of a handful of leaders who kept a touring band for over 50 years! He adapted to every jazz style: swing, bepob, latin, fusion, jazz-rock and beyon d. No other trumpeter has ever consistently matched his technical abilities.
Excellent! What fun to see all these guys again in vid on YouTube! I had the pleasure of witnessing this particular line-up performing live with Maynard on many occasions... and they were truly fantastic! Such talent. (Dated Joey for a while, back in the day... LOL!)
I saw Maynard & this same group in Denton, Texas ,at what was then North Texas State University , around '78 or '79.Got there early & sat on the front row! He opened with this same tune the same way.No matter how much you turn up the volume on your speakers , it can't compare with being there. This was absolutely the best best band he ever put together.I also agree with Brian740, this was an incredible trumpet section. I spent many an hour listening to his records(yes vinyl!) in my room.
1:54 - Maynard 's charts challenged the musicians, the audience and most of all himself! What popular music challenges the listener today? Kids need to take risks, raid their parents record collections. Maynard was a music lover, master band leader and boundary shattering horn player. Maynard Ferguson R.I.P.
I was lucky enought to Meet Maynard Furguson and some of the band members in Austin when I was in College. We found out he was playing at Westlake high school, and we stumbled through a door that was the stage door. They invited us to sit front row and then hang with them as they packed up. We of course helped out. Great experience.
sick @ 2:10... Maynard was such a educational force in music in the 70-80s that without him I would have not continued to play music. What a motivator and one of a kind mother!
Maynard always played this song fast at this point in time. After MF was introduced over "Blue Birdland", the band would immediately launch into "Give It One" at break neck speed to pump up the audience. And it sure as hell did.
Oh yeah- MF was king of the stage, no doubt about it. I got to split lead with him on one tune at the end of our jazz festival in 1982. What an honor that was then and a memory I'll cherish all my days.
RIP Maynard .... this man was a trumpet hero. He hit a high note or two, didn't he? I remember taking my daughter to see him in Tampa ... her reaction was similar to the first time I took her to the NHRA TOP FUEL (which shakes the ground). Maynard was THE MAN!

My brass coach said she talked to Maynard when she was a sophomore in high school. He said the reason why he got all of that air was because he did a bunch of Yoga breathing excercises.

@kimani69870 Probably. My dad looks like that back when he was in his 20's. (My dad grew up in the 50's and 60's) It just made everyone awesome from that time. :P

It's so hard to believe it been almost 4 years since Maynard passed away. I still have trouble accepting it. There is a reason we all love him so much, and it's not just his incomparable playing.
I saw this band in '77 in Houston. Peter Erskine absolutely killed it on the drums, gave like a 10-minute solo I'll never forget. A year later he was already with Weather Report. Man.

Thanks for posting this video. I stumbled on it by accident. I was at this concert as a participant in the festival (I was in grade 10 a the time) and it changed the way I viewed jazz - it was a blast.
I think Maynard's best trumpet section was the one a few years ealier with Lynn Nicholson, Don Hahn & Stan Mark. This one was also quite good. Nicholson was a monster.
This was real humans, playing live...not a remastered synthesizer track to be found!

While a small mouthpiece like a "Jet Tone" might assist in adding a small boost in range, it would tear up your chops over time and limit the sound you can get. High range comes from a combination of fast air that is blown not pushed, a large mouthpiece (not too large) to let the airstream through and some natural ability, (embrochure control).

This song was used as Wheel of Fortune's pilot theme back in 1974 with Ed Byrnes and Susan Stafford.

This is the shrieky gobshite of all time. Music sure took a turn for the worse with this crap. Just when I thought Shirley Bassey was execrable!
