The movie didn't require a lesbian angle. The angst and struggle of two women trying to perfect an athletic exhibition, honing it to performance quality, is way enough of a story. In fact, it insults the atheletic woman by saying they're all "masculine", an image that would tend to quell ambition in many female potentials.
No, the story IS the lesbian angle. And how does this insult ALL athletic women? It's only focused on two women. And they don't seem at all masculine to me. In fact they're extremely graceful and beautiful. You are the one who seems to be generalizing about women. This film is about the romance, and the two women working together, and the sexual tension they feel despite one of them having a husband at home.

The movie is about surpassing self-imposed limits. The two women did not need to be lovers to envision this. In the very few movies made about women athletes, ALL of them have a moment where someone tosses the "you secretly want to be a man" hook. Non-lesbian athletes risk the potential of being automatically labeled such thanks to this signifier; and rather than be hurt by such unfair attitudes, they're afraid to even try out.
On the other hand, I agree it is a remarkable, simplistic film that should have been better distributed. Both actresses were incomparable in both their characters and in performance.
I watched the movie about a week ago, to me it juss seemed like a woman that was not happy at home with her husband, and not beign able to have a child. She found something new to do each day and found herself a new lover. It has nothing to do with being masculine, it was aimed for the gay crowd, as logo put it.

Funny, I thought it was just a light, PG-rated love story between two women.
Go figure.
