The major point being missed here is that the Air Force flies the AC-130 Gunships, but other branches have C-130s that are used for their different roles. The Air Force are the only ones that fly the gunships.
Army doesn't fly the A-10, the USAF does. Marines also have C-130's, F/A-18's, MV-22's, EA-6B's, F-5's(in the adversary role.) C-12's, a C-20, UC-35, and will be getting the F-35B to replace the AV-8's.
The AC-130's appearances in the 2007 Transformers film and in Call of Duty 4 cemented its position in my mind as the most badass aircraft around today.
