  • machine porn... lol kick ass CNC

  • sweet

  • 0:44 verry dangerous!! never NEVER take of chips with your bear hands!!!! NEVER

  • does it cut iron as well?

i mean same thickness and feedrate ... but instead of plastic cut iron...

  • I love this, reminds me of all the old slant bed CNC lathes they used to machine large diesel cams and crankshafts at ThyssenKrupp when I worked there.

Do you have this blueprinted? I'd love to see some footage of the back side of this machine and to get plans if possible. I've been trying to figure out where you got those bearing screws but can't find any like that, where did you get them?

  • why does it have to go all the way back for a tool change?

  • Wow, Awesome machine. I'm trying to do something similar, but I did not plan on making the turret as that typically adds a great amount to the cost.

Is this open source? Do you have a project page? I'd like to see how you built the turret so that I can gauge the expense it would add to my project. Thanks for your help...

  • well done is all I have to say

  • Impresionante , MUY MUY BUENO

  • cnc's are incredible. I've always been interested in the way they work and I guess they're one of those incredible inventions that only stops when the imagination stops:)

  • Incredible job!

  • The auto-turret and ballscrews got me, that's way above and beyond your average DIY mini lathe :) What is your software capable of? Can it run the majority of regular G-code? Canned/repetative cycles, tool nose radius compensation, etc? I'm impressed, great job!

  • I know this isn't today's video, but I just find it.

This great work, amazing machine. Congratulation.( take care of your hands) I know it I had a little lathe-accident . So be careful. 1 more thing. The tool changing would be faster on y-axis. take a too long two times to go on x- axis. There and back.

  • First of all, really good job! It looks really nice!

I/we (my job) need to build something similar to this. We have a huge monforts lathe, primarily running small pieces of plastic. Something in this size seems to be perfect for what we do! We would need a bar feeder and some separation system for cut pieces though. I will look at this for inspiration when I CAD our lathe! :)

  • do you have prints? and if so will you email me about them at minmachining@yahoo.com?

  • This is amazing, but im really surprised that motor is strong enough to turn the chuck. It sounds like the spindle slows down when the machine is making a cut, how would it handle with a harder material...?

  • Who the hell dislikes this, politics students, art students, language students? Show yourselves

  • I knew a guy who cut his finger off that way.

  • Great work man. Hope to build something as great as this one day! What did it cost you in materials if you don't mind me asking?

  • Very nice lathe. For a bed that long it does miss a tailstock though.

  • @slome815

Uh I didn't realise I made the same comment 8 months ago.

  • Outstanding.

  • Nice work! I love the CNC human hand?

Safety is for those who've already milled, drilled, turned, bored, grind, sanded, hammered, sawn, burnt, bit, filed or nailed, a finger!

    That makes all of us...

No seriously, epic machine and my hat off to you sir!

  • you ever hear of this great invention its called a brush use that to remove chips

  • Absolutly fantastic. I am blown away. THat is the kind of thing I want to see on youtube. Something real that actually works. Great job. I'm very curious how many hours it took to design and build and how much did it cost?

  • god the things i could build with that!

  • Its like a giant version of Jonny 5's utility doohickey.

  • Awh man your getting it dirty!

  • Very impressive, your a very smart individual !

  • Absolutely fantastic what a excellent job you made of it.

  • Very nice job! I'd love to be able to do something like that.

People please, the man has been a machinist for 30+ years. If he wants to clear away some plastic shavings with his hand big deal. He obviously knows the risks, understands them and has done just fine all these years. He doesn't need the armchair safety geeks from the internet to warn him of the dangers of being around machines.

  • amazing tool.. stop moving the camera please!!!

  • donde puedo comprar una torreta asi

  • Hi, just wondering if you plan on selling any of these machines? I need arround 3. And if so cost? Or if you can sell complete plans for it? Thanks - Ricky Cruz cncautotec@yahoo.com

  • WOW!

  • Damn. And I thought I was a bad-ass.

    Nice job!

  • yea wright home build its manufactured

  • can you machine steel too?

  • It's a nice lathe, It could use a tailstock though.

  • imagine getting your cock caught in that. ouch!

  • were did u get the plans to build this?

  • Man...if a lathe is spinning...never put your hand on it!!!!! EVER EVER EVER!!!...what you did, someday, will give you an accident...

As for the lathe, very nice.

  • Sweet

  • i just want to know how you got the rails accurately placed

  • This is why some people are called engineers and some don't know how to set the time on a microwave oven. Impressive work!

  • so you can make gun barrows?! impresive...

  • nice machine!!! can i asked what motors you used, especially for the main spindle, and did you make the indexer and locking mechanism?

  • amazing Lathe design, which works great, Do you have any trouble with chips or shavings getting into your linear bearing slides or your ball screw shaft? Also your turret tool changer design is number 1.

  • very nice machine! can I buy one?

  • NIce WorK congrats.

  • by the way NIce work

  • you dont like your fingers man?

  • super super super

  • GENIUS.

  • Very nice.

Watch that delrin swarf. You don't want to get that in your nice ballscrews, it will reek havoc.

  • do you have the plans?

  • what program you used

  • ........ I have just become smart enough to know how dumb I really am .........

  • Dude!!!!

Your flipping amazing, can I be your apprentice.

  • me to

  • i thought i were quite clever in the workshop. if you have built all this yourself, then i was wrong! superb!!!!

  • Congratulations for your machine! Good job!

  • Oh, is it synchronized so it can cut threads? If so, damn...

  • Thats what i call craftmanship... So amazing and well done!

  • Still looks to be better than a Haas.

  • Very nice...

  • WE DEMAND PLANS

  • wow! Awesome! You should have showed us the parts though! :)

  • Well I'll be buggered! What a fantastic job!

How long did it take to build? Regarding the comments on putting your hands in there. When I was in my apprenticeship we used to stop the chuck and remove swarf with our bare hands Crappy old beasts that took forever to slow down. Better to learn what you can and can't do than cower from it.

  • or just hook up an electric brakeing system ; )

  • Hey great job on that - most impressive :)

  • thats awsome.... great work.... where did you get all the parts?? where did you start??

good luck in building more.... : )

  • great job on the machine!

  • could u possibly post me the plans for this wonderful machine

  • beautiful work but gang style tooling is FAR simpler and cheaper than a turret and would do the same job.

  • Top job! This is an excellent machine! I flinched when your hand went in there before I realised it was plastic! Even so, a brush would be safer. Hope you're wearing goggles too? ~ ('.'~)

  • pls don't put hands on rotaring elements

  • Yeah that made me cringe!

  • do you have the drawings of it ?

  • Great piece of work. If you sell your turret I would like more information. Steel? Live tooling in your future?

  • make my one and i will make you a website :)

  • how much cost you

and how much cost if you buy lathe like this

  • it has dirt on it now.... start again! :P j/k

    nice work!

don't get into the habit of knocking scrap off with your fingers. i know it's plastic, but it's easy to start doing it with metal, and then all kinds of nasty stuff can happen

  • A magnificent achievement!

I assume that it is all stepper motor driven without feedback. Are stepper motor lathes practicable in the real world of making parts? As most commercial lathes have either AC or DC servo drives you have to think the answer is no, but is this really true? Are you limited in cut size by your spindle power or your stepper torque?

I especially liked the tool change mechanism in the fully machined housing with tight internal radii.

  • Good Job!!!

How much does this machine and all the things that are needed to run it cost in dollars($)?

  • Lathe looks great, but for goodness sake quit moving the camera!

  • Beautifull... How much money have you spended on it?

  • Incredible machine!! but dont use your hands please!!! It´s very dangerous. I had an injure with my lathe... Please caution

    Congratulations

  • Thanks dg, very good safety point. I only cleared the Delrin chips for the camera, I've been a machinist for 30+ years and I still have all my fingers and toes. :)

KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM TURNING MACHINERY!!!

  • good advice. i like the setup, do you have any plans for up and coming machinists?

    pretty solid design.

if you do have plans i would greatly appreciate getting a hold of them.

and what was the approximate cost?

  • @dumpstercnc Good to hear! Next time you clear away swarf, you might lose a finger! Instead, use your toes, they're for balance, but not as important for dexterity! :)

What were the pieces that were made? What stops them getting damaged as they fly off the stock ? Can you come up with a better way to remove them, so they don't fly off randomly at such high speed?

  • @dgalvarez

wow - using hands is a bit silly. If you must clear rubbish use compressed air instead.

  • Very nicely done.

  • This is a "AWESOME" machine!

    American Made!

Now that used to mean something to us all.

    I dont like Import's!!!!

I rather do what this guy did!

Signed a Tool,Die and Mould Maker..

  • how many fingers u have? XD

    great job.

  • Fantastic!

  • lol! go for the gusto!! bar feeder, sub spindle and live tooling baby ow!

  • What software is controlling it? Nice Job!

  • Awesome! Only an American would be so arrogant to build their own cnc machine! I thought Americans were so stupid, they couldn't spell cnc, never mind build one from scratch! Just kidding-great work!

  • Wow, exstremly impressive. I´m wondering though, is it possible to machine aluminium and steel with high tolerance and a good finish?

  • Your machine looks awesome ! Great job !

  • great job man

  • that is an incredible piece of work; hats off. how did you cut the hirth joint on the tool changer?

  • Looks Like A great machine. Good Job!

What speed controller did you use? What Motor and HP?

  • Treadmill motor and controller from Surplus Center. Its rated at 2.5hp but that's way off, more like 1hp or less, but works great geared from 6700 rpm at the motor to 1600 at spindle.

  • does a nice job cutting black delrin.

  • Nice job! Well put together. Maybe you've got a web site where you can share with us the construction of this machine?

    Many thanks for uploading

  • Congratulations looking really good, a nice peice of kit you have there...
