  • My grandpa died this morning...Have to go through this on Friday...And guns scare the crap outta me! :( I did it with my other grandpa and almost passed out...I'm nervous :/

    R.I.P. Papa I love you ♥

  • Can someone please tell me EXACTLY what the Firing Commander is saying to his men - from start to finish? Thank you, All.

  • @harpo548

    Firing Sergeants... forward arms!

Prepare to fire... ready, aim, fire!

    Aim, fire!

    Aim, fire!

    Present arms!

    *Horn plays*

    Order arms!

Parade rest! (this got cut off, but you can hear him say "parade")

  • No you still get a 21 gun salute I've done two ceremonies already and about to do one for the 4 star tht just passed away

  • I thought it was supposed to be 7 men with guns not 8, and sorry for the loss.

  • i'll wearing my air force blues(i'm in the civil air patrol) to my grandpa's funeral on Saturday, he was in the coast guard for 5 years

  • Five people are freaking commies.

  • Geez. I Jus Cried At This! So Sad. Thank You To All Of The Fallen Soldiers And The Veterans And Everyone In The Armed Forces For Defending Our Country.

  • i AM ON OUR LOCAL HONOR GUARD.....THIS IS NOT....I REPEAT , NOT A 21 GUN SALUTE.

  • I have had the honor , yes I call it an honor, to have attended several family members Homegoing where Taps has been played. One sticks out in my mind . It was a cold damp day, the Honor Guard was at the graveside and the Rifle Squad had just fired the vollies. Two buglers were positioned at either end of the cemetary. One started and the other echoed. With the overcast weather that haunting sound sent chills that I cant even explain.

  • These are NOT guns... and there are eight (8) in the firing party which is the maximum that a "THREE VOLLEY SALUTE" firing party can be. So 3 times 8 is TWENTY FOUR!!! (if it were correct)

A 21 GUN Salute is reserved for the President of the United States and

videos among my uploads will give you a slide show of one during the last inauguration.

  • ....this is not a 21 gun salute. They are simply firing three volleys, or a three volley salute, if you will.

  • Today, my great grandfather died. He served as a marine in Okinawa, landed on the beaches, came home to a three year old daughter he had never seen before in his life, for he was deployed while his wife was pregnant. 3 years ago, his wife died. Married for 65 years. Today, he dies and can finally return to his wife, the one he so greatly adored for so many years. "Once a marine, Always a marine."

  • i cried when they did the 21 gun salute and present arms at my grandpas funeral 3 yrs ago

  • @larrybyrd100 Thank you for your grandpa's service, but unless your grandpa was the President of the US, he got a 3 VOLLEY SALUTE...

  • to my late marine uncle johnthan. rest in peace

  • Rest in peace Grandpop "Whitey" 25th infantry special operations WWII..your jokes and stories live on forever. You always were and will be my Hero. (De oppresso liber..) 2/15/1923-7/25/1996 Walter C Forrest

  • The 5 people that disliked, are haters, and are souless

  • I think it's beautiful. My grandfather passed and his funeral was yesterday. The Marines came out and did this. I cried like crazy through "taps", but it was wonderful

  • I think it's beautiful. My grandfather passed and his funeral was yesterday. The Marines came out and did this. I cried like crazy through "taps", but it was wonderful.

  • Would like to back hand the 5 people who clicked "dislike"

  • three round volly. Not a 21 gun salute. HUGE difference.

  • Wow, this makes their deaths so much more meaningful.

  • My Uncle Guy got that today :(

  • I have to say thank you to all the men and women that are in service to our country and GOD BLESS THE TROOPS!

  • at my uncles funeral at few days ago they did this and it made me jump .... haha

  • There doing this at my dad's funeral they call it a memorial due to my father's wishes of not having a funeral.

  • This was the most tear jerking part of my grandpa's funeral and every time i hear that trumpet it still chokes me up.

  • I have never made it through one of these without losing it. One of the most emotional moments you will ever experience. Brings it all home.

  • That is a firing party, not a 21 gun salute.

A 21 gun salute uses field artillery or ship's guns which fire 21 times. It is an honour reserved for heads of state.

  • @lwj2 Yes, this is called a 3-volley salute, and the rifle team would typically have 3, 5 or 7 members. When a rifle team has 7 members, there are 21 shots fired (but not 21 guns), which is what gives rise to the confusion. What is very strange about this particular gun salute is that the rifle team actually has 8 members -- i.e., one more than there should be. So, there were actually 24 shots fired!

  • Forever shall he patrol the Wild Blue Yonder.

  • he messed up but it was good

  • By the way, the song playing is "The Last Post", not Taps

  • @ErichSlush - I'm afraid you're a little mixed up Erich. In this video the bugler is sounding "Taps" , not "Last Post". Just as first sounded in July 1862 by bugler Oliver Wendal Norton at Harrison's Landing, Virginia.

  • With all respect for the fallen...

Three rifle volleys may be fired at military funerals, and if you have seven shooters this does equal 21 shots. But this is NOT a "21-gun salute." In the military, a "gun" is a cannon, not a rifle. And any number of riflemen may be used as an honor guard at a funeral service, subject to availability. They will fire three volleys and the total number of shots will be dictated by the number of riflemen. An actual 21-gun salute is reserved for the president.

  • He/She broke a note. Beautiful in its own right.

  • @mattissoc00l

Aye. It happens. Even at Kennedy's funeral the bugler cracked a note. The papers all attributed it to emotion, but the bugler later admitted it was due to the weather. Brass instrument mouthpieces are a nightmare to play when it's cold out.

  • The saddest, yet proudest moment ever. I don't even know if I want it played at my funeral. Beautiful though.

  • Both my grandpas served...

Justin Ernest Lacy... United States Army... Rest in peace.

  • They did this at both of my grandpas' funerals.

    RIP:

Daniel Carlton Sanders, United States Air Force

Steven Henry Mayfield, United States Marine Corps

  • When I'm at one of those services, it's hard not to flinch- even though you know what is coming.

  • I've been to thousands of military funerals and have taped hundreds and even I flinch when they shoot - and yes, I'm well aware that it's coming.

  • @vivaloriflamme

Yeah... I don't know. For me the flinch has to do with the finality of it all. Like each shot proves they're really gone.

  • ya true. They use artilery like for presidents and shit

  • if thats the case then they call it that beacuse 7 men each fire 3 times do the math 3 times 7 is.............21 good job and it doesnt even matter he served his country and thats how it is repect that

  • they did this at my great grandfather's funeral. I cried my eyes out, damn bird flu killed him, he was in the services when he was young. My close friend, Cameron, is going to war in Semtember. I will miss him dearly

  • I hope he comes back alive

  • They are unpaid, volunteer AMERICAN veterans, monko-san! Active duty honor guards are not available everywhere.

  • All of those men have long been retired. They were his fellow servicemen during his time in the military.

  • I say this only because while im paid, im a volunteer AMERICAN veteran. I work hard to make sure that my area has a shit hot Honor Guard.

  • Comment removed

  • I was 3 years old when my uncle Charles

passed on. I couldn't understand why everyone was crying. It was my first funeral. My mother showed him to me in the open casket, I said, 'Mommy he's just sleeping. But when we were at the cemetary and they did the 21 gun salute,

    I STARTED CRYING!

  • god bless not only america but the world

    god bless the world

  • I served on the honor guard several times while on active duty, would see the loved ones jump when we fired and then typically lose it. When my grandfather was buried I was going through the cadence in my mind I KNEW when the rifles would fire yet I flinched and totally lost it when the salute was fired.

ALL gave some, some gave ALL. Let us always remember.

  • I had to go to one of these for my my cousin who died in the assault to take falijia:(

  • This is a VFW honor guard. I am on the honor guard here in Utah. We were all given Air Force uniforms the wear, but most of the guys wear the uniform they served in. It does not make us look uniform, but it does make it so we represent all the services.

  • god bless america

  • They did this at my great grandpa's funeral last week. It was sad cuz they were takin role call and they started saying his name and there was no response because he's in Heaven with Jesus. Im sorry if this offends you if you don't believe in God or in Heaven

  • I'm sorry for your loss and yes, this is often a very sad situation to view.

As I close this note I'll also give my private prayer for your grandpa wherever he might be and for you and your family, that He gives you strength as you journey through these most trying times. If your God might rest his hand this day, may He rest it comfortably with you!

  • They did this at my grandpa's funeral in 2005 too, it's strange, you know the shots are coming, but you flinch anyways. God Bless our troops!

  • @cenastar567 Don't apoligize its the truth

  • @cenastar567i am truly sorry for your loss, however it amazes me how your generation has been brainwashed into not believing in God. You should Never apoligize for believing in God. That's what your great grandpa fought for! now it's up to You to fill his shoes. get out there and do it!

  • @cenastar567 my dad's friend did this for my uncle many years after vietnam when he died

  • @cenastar567 Dont be sorry for what you believe in and what you feel is right. Stand up for it and be proud.

  • @cenastar567 dont be sorry.sorry for ur loss.they HAVE to respect that u do.it makes me almost cry because my ulncle is in the army.and because i love it so much

  • @cenastar567 You should be ya candy ass

  • veterans unite.

  • Im sorry to hear that...

Thatd be funny if after they shot, youd hear the shriek of some bird

    Haha

    Hah

    ha...

    Okay maybe not

  • they usualy shoot blanks

  • If they shot real rounds, they could end up hitting someone or something.

Bullets do come down when shot in the air you know.

  • Whats this song called it remind me of the fallen men served to fight for our coutries LET US BE FREE

  • The song is called Taps. It's commonly used on military installations to signify the end of the workday and at military funerals. This song is often difficult for people to listen to if they have attended the funeral of a loved one who has served in the military.

  • Nothing could truly signify the end of something better than taps can. End of the day, or end of a life, gets the mood done very well. and very heartbreaking if you can hear a true bugler play it. Ashame, the military needs more buglers as so to respect the fallen.

  • Taps was written by a father who lost a son in the civil war i believe it was. After the battle, he walked onto the battle field while the wounded and dead were being taken care of, and played it.

  • My grandfather's funeral was today and they did all of these military rites for him. Taps...it was so very moving, to say the very least. RIP to all of our fallen and deceased comrades.

  • I'm not gonna lie,I love war in every way and form man can make it. But this song always makes me just a little bit more human i suppose

  • it's the way of nature... humans were born to fight. humans have fights, arguements, and demenstrated here.... war..

but, to love war you have to understand it...many people don't consider this to mind they think war is just a bunch of shooting, like a game of call of duty, now that's fun because you know there's no one really getting hurt but lives are lost in a real war and to those who've lost someone it deals great pain to them.

  • I know war don't worry on that.

I love it in every way and fashion man can wage it. After all.

"Death solves all problems, no man no problem"-Joseph Stalin

  • no man no problem but if their still alive you can solve it

  • Ah yes, but I like my ideology better and intend to follow it respectfully my kind sir.

  • so follow your leader. apparently getting rid of you would solve some problems, lol.

  • Your saying we could have reasoned with the fuhrer by that logic.

  • WE are seeing too many scenes like this one. Lets do what we are goig to in the mideast and lets bring our troops home!!9988cancer

  • Hopefully, our troops will come back safely. I fully support them!

  • Done at my grandfathers funeral 2 years ago and at my best freinds grandfathers funeral...never anything more moving...

  • This was done at my great uncle's funeral a couple of years ago.He was a WWII vetran.

  • @ConfederateAvenger my papa served in WW2 too. he was in the 36th infantry while in Germany. he died on Sep 18, 2008. i miss him very much. :*(

  • My brother was in the army and was supposed to go into his 3rd tour to Iraq but committed suicide about 2 weeks ago. We had everything at his funeral and the 21 gun salute makes you jump no matter how many times they fire. And then the taps make you start bawling. Military funerals are very emotional.

(And why are there 8 shooters?)

  • I saw many of these veterans recently and asked why and they said "because we aren't 29 anymore and we wanted to make sure we had enough!"

  • OMG I'm so sorry about your brother...

  • I'm sorry, I have a family member in the army who is in Iraq right know

  • just came from a friends wake, had full 21 gun salute, runs a chill up my spine every time i hear it, but honorable to know someone who served and gave his freedom for us to have ours, god bless our heroes, the ones serving and the ones that have fallen

  • why are their 8 shooters? 7*3=21, 8*3= 24

  • i remember this song and the 21 gun salute from my grand pas funeral. every time i hear it it makes me want to cry.i know 2 or 3 people overseas and i am proud to know them. when i am done with colege i am gonna enlist in the navy just like my grandpa! GO USA!!!!!!

  • Well...since you are going to go to college, you might as well enroll in ROTC so that once you graduate you will be an officer instead. No disrespect to the enlisted soldiers, since my father was enlisted before becoming an officer, however, you'll already be a few steps ahead if you go to college.

  • god bless all those who served in the military. this song brings tears to my eyes everytime i hear it.

to all those who have commented of diseased loved ones: May they rest in peace and god bless their souls.

  • yeah TAPS is very emotional, my grandpa was ninety one and is a vet from WWII and i promised him i would play for him sometime but he passed before i could, and so they had me play taps at his funeral. i broke down before i even played, and it was so hard to do it but it was my best performance i have ever done and i hope he is proud.

    love u pops

  • I just attended one of my friends funerals. He was 31 and died in Baghdad. When they did Taps, I cried and it just hit me. He gave his life for our freedom. The emotion that came over me and the tears that ran down my cheek as the folded the flag and gave it to his parents.

God bless those who gave their lives for us.

  • ummm a true soldier picks out his mistakes fast enough to get the job done right, if we maintained that attitude in everything, humanity would be living in collapsed caves and would of yet to have created fire.

  • i had to listen to this when my grandfather died it is sad to listen to

  • PFC Donovan Dewayne Witham KIA Baghdad Iraq 21 August 2007. May he and all others who paid they ultimate price for freedom rest in peace.

  • This gave me the chills. When my father died 3years ago, this honorable ritual was played at his funeral. I held myself well until after I heard the gun salute and taps started playing.

    This is beautiful.

  • My dad plays Taps, he is the only Navy bugler in South Wisconsin... he plays every Memorial Day here.. also, whenever a vet dies.. which is about once a week now.. i am very proud of him...

it's sad to see the World War 2 Vets that come crying when he is done playing Taps..... they come up to him, and congradulate him...

  • dont ever try and pick out mistakes your not a true soldier! check yourself!

  • This literally made me cry. My grandfather was a corporal in WWII who served in Germany. He passed away 8 years ago in April from a heart attack. They played Taps and did the 21 gun salute and present Arms for him. Every time I hear this I think of him.

Thank you to all the veterans who served in the war. Past and present.

    Corporal Carl Edward Hughes' grand-daughter.

  • Very moving! This Memorial Day buy a red poppy and thank a veteran! We are free because of them!

  • absolutely right.God bless those brave men and women.

  • thts awsome

  • Thanks for posting! It is so hard to stay still when the rifles are firing(I was shot at when I served)and then when taps are played(it makes me miss the deceased even more). May all who served rest in peace.

  • ... That was a 24 gun salute... 8 guys firing not 7, whoops.

    That's alright it still counts.

  • It took more than a year for somebody to notice and make comment - haha. Shhh, even the family didn't notice but I did at the time! Good eye!

  • all of you are making your respected branches look bad i suggest you act maturley even on the internet

  • why arent the reples working?

  • All the branches of the military deserves the same respect and gratitude its just some others do diffrent things. For me i am a united states army soldier i work with the k-9 military police unit.

  • very nice song

how is the name of the song?

  • Everytime i hear this song i mourn for those who have died in battle and i mourn for their families. God Bless the U.S.A.!

  • sorry i had my numbers backward im a lil dislexic. i ment 7 men firing 3 shots apiece

  • turkey lips 17 you are a dipshit its 3 men firing 7 shots apiece that equals 21 you obviously havent been to a funeral where the do 21 guns. gosh people are stupid

  • i have been to many military funerals, the28 is right, even if you are solid as a rock, Taps and the 21 gun will make you cry... It is truly a soldiers goodbye...

  • It's hard to play a bugle at a funeral. It's hard to keep yoursel from crying. He did a great job.

  • OK I heard the apology so don't worry

  • Too amny times did I hear this after I returned from the states, after many of my fellow soldiers died in that hellish jungle. I will never forget those brave men who paid the ultimate price to defend me and fellow Americans. I always pray that thier souls may rest in piece, for because of the events I witnessed from 1965-1968, mine does not.

  • heres my address :

    Army School of Infantry

ITC Catterick, Vimy Barracks, Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, England UK.

Go to the gate and ask for Cpl Batley. When can i expect you?

Oh and by the way, i believe it is spelt IRAQ. Does mommy know your using her keyboard again?

  • seriously did you just make all of that up because i have never heard of a army school in england unless that is were you were and i could care less if you were in the army id still kick your ass!

  • you've never heard of an army school in england? where do you think troops train? and you couldnt kick my ass anyway. you'd probably miss and hit a friendly tank as usual. or take out a building with friendly troops in.

  • u took the words out of my mouth, i dont apresheate lolifes like him.

  • Umm what happens when the bullet comes down and hits someone?

  • there blanks

  • May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

  • I don't know why this person received so many poor comment ratings; he's absolutely right. This youtube video portrays a 3-volley salute, not a 21-gun salute. Look it up if you'd like, but don't try and tell me I don't know the facts on military custom.

  • Dumbass there are 7 people firing 3 shots. 3*7 equals 21 hence a 21 gun. I know this because my dad was in the Old Guard and told me.

  • Maybe in math class, but not when it comes to military custom. In cases like these, some good, solid research I'm afraid trumps your dad's (and now your) misinformed notion of things like a 21-gun salute. Do us both a favor, look it up; and don't call someone a dumbass, it shows your level of immaturity (and it look especialy bad when you're the one with the facts screwed up). I have a key question to leave you with: what happens to your "Professor Facto" formula if only 3 or 5 men fire rifles?

  • nicely put GoNavy. i'm quite certain his dad was not in the old guard. i was a funeral detail oic and had to get schooled on the diff. b/w a 21 gun and a 3-round volley.

  • grandpa passed away 3 days ago :( was a general in his days..R.I.P Grandpa Cline..Ilove You SOO much

  • R.I.P all who has server in the Army

  • My father passed away almost a week ago, this past Thanksgiving weekend. He was an airman in the USAF in the early 1960's, and we had this same tribute done for him Tuesday. I wish we had recorded the cermony somehow. But I do have his flag in a case now along with 6 of the shells fired.

Thank you so much for this video post. It still brings me to tears. RIP Dad...

  • The 82nd Airborne did this for my friend Donovan along with Taps it was highly dignified and very well done.

  • my grandfather passed away in may. he was in the navy during ww2 and we had taps and the flag for him. it was a special moment hearing that and then weeks later being in bootcamp for the navy. we still have the flag today in a nice glass case

  • if all alse please play taps when i go!

  • It reminds me of the time of by beloved dog coggie. I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!

  • This isn't a 21-gun salute. It's a 3 volley salute.

  • 3 vollies x 7 guns = 21 gun salute

  • That's fine on a math test, but not in military protocol.

  • that is miltary protocol. They dont line up 21 guns and only fire once. that would look wrong to me.

  • Turkeylips 17, fortunately for the military, they don't rely on your poor ass judgment and debilitating brainrot to determine what "looks right." Military protocol (which is to say military CUSTOM) calls for a 3-volley salute as a military rite during the funeral of a deceased servicemember, not a 21-gun salute. I'm sick of civilians arguing MILITARY matters with MILITARY personnel.

  • Well, i wouldn't really be a civillian, being a Soldier in the finest Army in the world. I have attended several military funerals, including one for my close childhood friend Ben Ford, the 76th British Casualty in Afghanistan. I have only ever heard the '3 volley salute' as you call it, be called a 21 gun salute. Maybe our diffing militaries have different descriptions?

  • All Military Funerals receive a 3 Round Volley, not a 21 salute, which is reserved for the president or foreign heads of states who have died.

The 3 round volley and the playing of Taps is reserved for military personnel.

    God Bless the USA,

    US soldier

    37F Psychological Operations

    Persuade, Change, Influence

  • the 21 gun salute is 7 men firing 3 times.

  • The turkeylips17 "21 seconds of shame" is 7 thought processes destroyed by 3 brain cells.

  • thanks for your sacrifice!!!

my brother was kia March 23, 2006 in Iraq with the 175th Airborne Army Rangers...you dont understand the true cost of war until you see a flag draped coffin go by followed by a 21 gun salute!!!

  • My brother died 12-03-06 in Irag 5th Special Forces Group. That was the worst day of my entire life. I agree with you but I think the final roll call was the worst. It was so final.

  • My friend PFC Donovan Dewayne Witham was killed in action North of Baghdad Iraq on 21 August 2007. RIP Donovan ''Greater love has no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends'' John 15:13 NIV

  • My grandpa died last year or so, He was in the military. They played taps... Folded the flag.. I played some of my piano solos... I almost cried during Taps, though. Taps is truly one of my favorite songs...

  • My dad was a captain in Desert Storm and when he died he had a 21 gun salute and taps and I couldn't help to cry.

  • I have heard taps at the last 3 funerals i went to.... i cannot hear it without tears coming straight to my eyes. I usually can choke them back until that first long note.....

  • Brings a tear to the eye.

  • a 21 gun salute is for the head of state. three rifle volleys has historical roots in the revolutionary war time when there were real battlefields and they would cease fire to clear the field of dead. when each side was ready to resume fighting, they would fire three rifle volleys over the battlefield to signify that they were ready to roll. the regulation says that either three, five, or seven rifles may be used for three rifle volleys.

  • sad

  • what service is this

  • Its the VFW (veterans of foreign wars).

  • wasnt there 8 gun men?

  • Shhh, nice of you to notice but I'm not telling the family!

  • There is no 3 gun salute, what you heard was 7 men firing 3 times = 21 gun salute. No difference for enlisted man or officer. These men did a great job

  • It is a 3 gun salute.

The usual for an enlisted man.

21 guns is for a head of state.

  • Very nice Taps!! and a live bugler!

  • i love this country and hope that we can fix our problems and dont say we have none

  • Nobody said we didn't, but every nation does.
