Great to hear this old Alma Gluck number. Do you have the actual record? If so, I would like to get the number off the label. I have temporary use of an amazing record collection from the Groos Family descendents of San Antonio and found a Gluck single side Red Label "Tu" which was uploaded with no filtering or cleanup. This lady was one of the world's most famous singers Cirda 1910~recorded in Ukranian, Russian, Romanian, Yiddish, Hebrew, German, Italian, Spanish, Eng., etc.
@preservationhall01 The label number for this would be 15397 and yes I own the 78. Tu was Alma's first recording that was recorded in 3/22/1911. Thank you for sharing, as I have not heard that recording before, I own about 15 records made by Alma.
Civil war or no civil war this rendition of this song is a piece of Music history
"Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" sung by Alma Gluck for the Victor Talking Machine Co. in 1914 was the first celebrity recording by a classical musician to sell over a million copies
Interesting fact: Confederate general Robert E Lee freed his slaves right before the start of the civil war. Both Union general Grant and his wife didn't free their slaves until they were forced to by the 13th Amendment much later. Something that's left out of high school history books.
There is also a most beautiful version of this song by American soprano Eleanor Steber posted on YouTube. It is from an early TV broadcast of the popular Voice of Firestone.
A beautiful rendition by Alma Gluck of this classic old and poignant song of the South. Naturally the dunderheads have to start commenting about the Civil War and who won and lost. Thank you for this posting.
we won the war!!!!!!!! yankees unite to crush the old virginian, slave loving ways. the confederate should not be honored it should be covered in a black shroud of shame.
@MegaLink117. As a matter of fact. The confederates should be honored. They fought for what they belived in and did the same thing as the the us did against the brittish. They secceded. And if you think that the northern states were so much better, why didn't they let colored men fight in the war in the start?
It was a white mans war. The coloured people allso didn't get the same ammount of money as the white people in the army and didn't get promotions until after the war. They are justas bad
This song was written by a black man named James Bland, the first to ever have a nationwide hit back in 1878. Little stuff like that should be looked up before commenting on the "pro-slavery agenda" of a song.
@MegaLink117 Why would you say such a thing? Are we not also Americans? I am a Virginian and I love my state not matter what you say to me. This song isn't supposed to be about the Civil War it is a beautiful song about a dear state and a place I call home. If you cannot see this simple fact than you are blinded by hate. Please come to Virginia and then maybe you will understand why this song was written. Virginia is a beautiful state that I am proud to call home.
@MegaLink117 Fool. This was written by a slave by the name of James Bland. Had the war been about slavery, how is it that three Union states remained slave states until the wars end? Seems Union victory did not last. The north is a rust belt rotting away from high taxes and ever dininishing freedoms while the old south booms. The union should be covered in a black shroud of shame for the way in which states rights and the US Constitution were trashed.
Sad this song fell victim to a 'PC' society. Something with so much emotion and feeling shouldn't just be swept aside by a small group of people who feel it doesn't belong. It's a part of Americana after all.
It saddens my heart that the virginia state legislature is trying to get this song demoted and replaced as the state song. All Americans should never forget our history. North and South.
It is the constant wish of liberals and the politically correct to place bad libels on the South and try to cover up the true history of the South.... Southern born myself and Southern at heart and soul. Deo Vindice
But you're also right wing and prejudiced against Liberals. I love this song, am a Liberal and am so proud of the progress made this century in race relations, labour rights, women's rights etc by the Liberals.
The South has a "dark" history which needs to be acknowledged but there's no reason why we should not also sing this song, if only to demonstrate how much progress has been made in the last 100 years.
No it doesn't. No worse than the north. By saying that you are saying all our initial presidents like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, James Madison were tainted. It saddens me how bad our education system is now with it's nationalistic agenda.
There are issues with any part of the country or the world for that fact. It amazes me how many people still dwell on the mistakes of the past and don't applaud the advances that have been made. Don't tell me Mr King didn't advance his cause because he surely did. Don't bury the past but learn from it!
Thank you, it was posted already but I reposted this due to it sounding better plus I put photos with it. Hope the other channel doesn't mind too much.

Don't be ridiculous - I guess you can't help it... who's "we", were you there?
This song has nothing to do with the "war" or "slave-loving ways". It has to do with the love of a place.
BTW, I was born and raised in New England. This is a lovely song, sung with great sentiment and artistry by a woman born in Bohemia...

The song has nothing to do with that. The presentation here shares the vocal talents of one of the best soprano voices from the early 20th century.

It's not much of a song. It's Gluck's exquisite voice and phrasing that makes it special.
