I have major anxiety problems, and as a Christian they were worse because I was worried about being perfect and going to Hell. I don't worry about those things anymore. Life is good. My personal opinion, as an atheist: Just because you are an atheist doesn't mean you're overall intelligent, and just because you're religious or spiritual doesn't mean you're overall unintelligent. It seeks proof for everything it claims by doing repeatable experiments. In one of these, scientists replicated the circumstances in which they thought life could originate. Religion has done nothing but help my mother through her life and I have no problem with that at all. In fact i think it's a great thing if used for the power of good. i just don't believe in it. @geeflyboy And as for benefits, I can honestly say I'm much happier and relaxed as an atheist than I ever was as a Christian. I have major anxiety problems, and as a Christian they were worse because I was worried about being perfect and going to Hell. I don't worry about those things anymore. Life is good. I'm good to others and I try to make the world a better place, but I forgive myself for my mistakes and don't obsess over eternal damnation. :3

atheism is not an ideology. it is a position on the subject of theism. it is not in and of itself a body of thought. it is simply the stance that god does not exist. nothing else.

My personal opinion, as an atheist: Just because you are an atheist doesn't mean you're overall intelligent, and just because you're religious or spiritual doesn't mean you're overall unintelligent. My father is a Christian but he was invited to join MENSA. Although it is worth mentioning that 95-98% of scientists with degrees are atheist, agnostic or religiously skeptical.

Christianity is plainly and simply implausible, and thus will never be proven correct. 1st: I think it's hard to survive in today's society without being open minded about beliefs. Since it's pointed out later that atheists know more about the Bible than believers, I guess that's a mute point, isn't it?

As an atheist I find some of your comments offensive. I know many atheists are often offensive to people with a religion. Many people are atheists are so because they cannot believe in a god when there is so much pain. Religion can often provoke violence, anti-gay hate, the Israeli Palestine conflict, violence against women. Religion is not always bad however when people oppress their beliefs on others, or start problems between religions, religion becomes a issue of both science and morality

If you see a cross turn your head. If people say God bless America or thank God, just be tolerant. When you can prove there's no God or the origin of life and the universe let me know. YES religion can be used for BAD. Satan loves that. But if you're ignorant of Jesus how do you know?

Faith does not necessitate humility, it says "i have a personal relationship with the most powerful being in existence and the whole universe not only revolves around me and my brothers and sisters but was CREATED for us." More intellectual dishonesty.
You, geeflyboy, are being a bigot towards atheists. Not only are you demonstrably intellectually dishonest, you're a hypocrit. I do apologize for writing so many posts to this video, but willful ignorance and so much dishonesty is frustrating.

I get atheism makes gay OK, no consequences for sin. However evolution says procreation and survival. Even science says homosexuality is aberrant.

America founded by Christians, fact! Sure some were, some definitely weren't. Some WERE atheists. To deny that is to be intellectually dishonest... detecting a pattern here?

You're not seeing the problem with religion, only with other religions. You for some reason see your religion as different from every other one out there, and are in fact an atheist to all other religions, you don't see the intellectual dishonesty with this?

OH SHUT UP. I HAD NO FEAR BEFORE I WAS A CHRISTIAN OR AFTER. I know 1000's of Christians over my 50 yrs and NONE of them are fearful. I can tell you from age 24 when I started reading the Bible (between undergrad and grad school, masters engineering & mathematics) it was all TRUTH & JOY and ADDED to my life. Also, your comment about people killing despite Jesus instead of for Jesus is just your opinion, if you think otherwise you're being intellectually dishonest... again. The ways of interpreting the word of a god are as numerous as the thousands of religions that have come and gone and are no longer believed in because they're seen as foolish.
I don't agree with a lot of what Maher is saying here, I am not as forceful as he is, but you're being even sillier.

Actually, you're DEAD wrong! Evolution is not a "theory" it is a scientific fact! The "I've never seen it" argument is pure lunacy. Noone in the scientific community says it happened "too long ago to be seen." In fact, there are SEVERAL cases of evolution happening over much shorter periods of time as in mere DECADES. MANY people have also killed in the name of Christianity as well. Rape, murder, torture, genocide have all been in the name of religion for THOUSANDS of years. That is a FACT!!!

Atheism/Agnostic/Apatheism seem to be the most logical train of thought. It really comes down to whether you believe in talking snakes, burning bushes, Noah's arc and other mythological shit or you don't and anyone who does should not be taken seriously.

As a Christian, you need to be told not to kill, and there is a punishment from god if you do. I as an atheist, do not need to be told by god that killing is wrong. I don't need the fear of god to prevent me from doing such things.

If you know history then you'd know that the great civilizations of Islam is what brought christians out of The Dark Ages and taught them Astrology, Chemistry, Science, Math, Hygeine, Hospitals, Health.
