took my first flight on eastern 727 lga to dca the shuttle.b-727 were great but when took my first l-1011 flight out of lga all i could rember how huge the inside was and when those engines spooled up and starting rolling you had that wonderful engine sound.and a slight smell of jet a .the 1011 was the greatest bird every built.every minute everyday an eastern jet was on the way....

Not only were these great airlines but in the 50's and 60's it was a great time to grow up. People were responsible, most law bidding, had morals, America was at the top of the world in almost everything. God it was great. Now we are the laughing stock of the world, broke, uneducated all because of greed. Ask Lorenzo. Just like he sold out Eastern our representatives have sold us out.

Brings back lots of great memories growing up in Miami during the 50's and 60's. Miami then had approximately one quarter of the working population then worked for the airline industry in Miami. My father-in-law and neighbor worked for Eastern and my brother-in-law worked for National and then Pan Am. A good friend worked for Northeast. These airlines are all gone but not forgotten. Those were the days!!!

@elkhunter4817 Same here, was born in the Gables in 1960, and grew up with Eastern. Whether it was at school, or at church or just about anywhere, you knew someone who worked for, or who's parents worked for either Eastern, National, or Pan Am. Too bad all those days are gone. Miami is just not the same town it used to be, especially without the airline industry.

In the seventies, and until the mid eighties, Eastern's operation in SJU was huge. It controlled most of the flights, and offered many excellent destinatinons. Then American took over and it has been the biggest carrier since. I surely miss those EAL's beautiful and efficient L-1011's. Thanks for posting.

@billace90 Yes indeed, SJU was an Eastern fortress hub for their Latin America route network. Then in the late 80's EAL sold the latin American network to AA, which resulted on AA taking the Eastern Air Lines terminal at SJU. Currently due to the AA schedule cuts now AA has left their SJU terminal with most gates unused (Gates 3-8) and now they use gates 9-16 (or so). Many will surely miss Eastern in Puerto Rico.

Amen! Frank Lorenzo looted away all of the South American routes and the LGA-DCA / LGA-BOS shuttle, which made money for EAL. For those of us that spent a lot of wonderful years working for this airline, it changed radically when Lorenzo came onboard and drove it into the ground. For those of us that loved the airline, it WAS a family we will never forget! Thanks for the great video!

Nice clip. 30 years ago today I went to work for them. After 10 years I walked away with some great memories but the greatest lesson was that our governement totally failed the people allowing the back door sale and breakdown to happen. It was a huge scam and it hurt many people who never recovered.

Too bad it is so forgotten and the truth never really came out.

My first trip on Eastern was in 1974 from MCO-RDU. it was my first time flying.I flew on a 727. I flew Eastern every year until 1982 between those two points . It made me want to fly when I had a chance ever since. Eastern was a great airline. I finnaly flew again this past July and I didn't know how much I really missed doing it. I really looked forward to flying L-1011's from MCO-ATL, it was a great plane.

Please don't bad mouth the loon. It's a decent bird and every once in a while--sort of looks like a DC-9.

Lorenzo managed to wreck 2 airlines and still doesn't care. Pond scum, well eventually even turds sink back to the bottom.

The mechanics union leader, I think his name was Charlie Bryant did not get along with Borman, they hated each other. So Lorenzo sold off Eastern piece by piece to Continental. That's how I remember it. I worked for Eastern from Nov 30, 1964 to Nov 30 1987.

Eastern was such a great airline in its day. I miss them.  I didn't like when they reduced the cheat lines on the fuselage. The thicker ones gave it a classy look.

Time has clouded your memory. I was there, I experienced it all. Eastern was going out of business, the unions refused to budge, so the doors were closed. Sorry, that's the way it was. No opinion - all fact.
