@GeforcerFX I think if you benchmarked them with cpu only benchmarks you would find a different story.

Even the Core 2 line is only about 1GHz faster clock for clock, I.E. a 2GHz Core 2 about equals a 3GHz Pentium 4 on single core applications. Seeing how the Core architecture is faster than the P6 architecture of the Pentium 3 clock for clock I don't see how a 1.4GHz tutlian is faster than a 2GHz faster p4.

Those tutlian p3's were great and were so fast the early Pentium 4's weren't needed!

The whole point of the P4 was very high clock speed to achieve performance.

@GeforcerFX The Willamette was rushed out because the Athlon was such a good chip. If people were 'wanting something new' they wouldn't have held on to their P3's like you already said.

Intel have behaved in a disgusting manner time and time again, and thanks to the weak minded consumer, they will continue to get away with their monopolistic business practice for generations to come.

So rest assured, you will have plenty more rushed out and poorly made Intel crap to go with your other garbage.

@GeforcerFX No we do not use BTX cases do we? Hmm *checks pc case* nope, no BTX here, maybe you should look at the spec sheet for your motherboard? Basically a chip which gobbled up so much power was totally unnecessary back then, and cpu's would have progressed on to bigger and larger coolers over time to what we have today without the red hot P4s. In fact my 'precious' Athlon was one of the first significant steps towards providing adequate cooling due to the lack of thermal protection.

You clearly haven't looked at benchmarks, you don't know about characteristics concerning different core architecture, you think having a red hot inefficient and over priced cpu is a good thing, so I coclude your either a troll or an Intel fan boy.

@GeforcerFX Intel had to bring out a new socket to support the Northwood core, making all of those motherboards built around socket 423 complete garbage. A Duron could put pace the early P4's, thats how rubbish they were, so I don't understand how you conclude a P4 could perform with an Athlon. The jump to 2ghz was nothing special as the CPU would do less work per clock cycle, it was made to clock fast to look good on paper. If they 'learned from there mistake' it couldn't have been that good!

@GeforcerFX A little bigger heat sink? it was extremely inefficient due to the inherent problems of the architecture, hence why Intel wanted to bring out the BTX form factor to try and combat the thermal issues suffered from the P4. The reason why BTX didn't take off was because Intel stopped pursuing the P4. Netburst didn't work when it was brought out, the Willamette core was rushed out to try and combat the success of the Athlon..

@GeforcerFX The P4 especially ran far too hot compared to the Athlon 64, Hyper-threading was a sham as it ran single threaded applications slower on a lot of your highly loved benchmarks, Netburst is a joke hence why they haven't carried over to any new generations of processors. The way Intel have behaved as a company with regards to business ethics is a complete insult to the consumer. So yeah, I'd say based on the contributions of the two companies, the Athlon was far superior.

Synthetic benchmarks are not the definitive proof as to whats better, and even if they were I'd still side with AMD. Every time AMD brought out a new line of cpus, I knew full well that I'd buy a product that would offer significant improvement over its predecessor. Intel couldn't offer that, and built its products around marketing gimics. Their platforms have a lower life span...

@GeforcerFX It basically took the size of Intel, along with their lack of business ethics to remain competitive against a tiny company like AMD. If company sizes were reversed, Intel would have gone bust before bringing out the Pentium D. So yeah, factor in the whole story of everything that was going on at the time, and the P3 and P4 sucked compared to the Athlon.

My hardmodded 1.47 P3 project is almost done..Just installed Windows 98se with 512mb of the fastest ram i could find for the board.Iam using an ATI Rage Fury Maxx Dual GPU video card(DX7) so i can play Quake 2 and MCFS.Ill have a vid soon..Its a classic old school machine with all the good stuff from the period

By the way...I like it too, get out what old hardware can run...I tested a year ago an old Notebook with an non MMX 1st-gen Pentium, 150MHz 48MB EDO-RAM 2GB HDD how Win2000 runs...what it brakes down is the low RAM but it works fine till the RAM runs out. :) Its like an Williamate 1st-gen Pentium4 Celeron 1,7GHz with Vista...you can use that CPU with a good GPU and fast HDD as game PC but don´t use MediaPlayer...it will be the only running prog when used and this with low speed vids, music run.

Windows 2000 dont have that much stuff but its VERY stable and is built of the NT Kernel (Like XP and Vista/7)

i made my own p3 system a p3 1ghz 512mb 133mhz 80gb 133 umda hdd soundblaster live5.1 xfx 7600gt 580m i can run fear combat on it but not smoothly my cpu heatsink is replaced with a better one then the standard and there an 120mm fan above it cant read the cpu temps motherboard dusnt let me:( also from a compaq deskpro

We also putted Windows XP Professional on it.

Works perfectly now. But we have no antivirus, just because; when you won't go to those familiar sites where you'll be cought up by a virus, then why would you need a antivirus;).

Maybe it would be good if you're gonna tweak Win XP, like close some start-up program's etc.
