most of my favourite singers have kind of bad technique - it's the timbre I think, or maybe that's the wrong word. John Lennon is the best example I can think off. I like a bit of gravel sometimes.
I think once a singer make the song their own and tell the story thru their own eyes and feeling, it will come from the heart and people will LISTEN! They are drawn into your feelings and feel what you feel when you deliver a song. That is my personal approach, especially the ballads. Even faster tunes becomes real when you live the song....people will live it with you.
Hey! you're great! I always have fun singing, but this was a doble dose of fun! Loved it!. About what makes a great singer, it's already been said, but for me it is to feel the song, the music, the words... to really feel it, the emotion will be natural. And also, no less important, it is to sing with one's unique voice, I mean the sound and the way of singing.
Oh!, by the way! I laughed soooo much with you in minute 5:57!!!! Lol !!
I like singers who understand the content of the songs they sing; which a lot of singers do not. I like rich tones, and projection, but can't stand overcooked performances. I also like resonance - a lot of singers resort to vibrato because they are off pitch, and can't find that resonance. Being a front man is a whole different ballgame though - being a great singer doesn't make you a good front man.
I really like J'Lostein :] She's unique and she has a great voice! Check out J'Lostein Transparent (Original Song) Btw The SINGERS' Show is awesome! Thanks for your advice it has really helped!
Awesome video Eric..loving the shows, the humor and the talent...i so agree with you all, joy is medicine to the soul, and that plays a huge part in singing. your awesome! i'm learning everything you got to give to us who want to learn from you..blessings eric!! blessings!!!

Man, your advice about "laugh into it " is phenomenal. I was doing vocal exercises for a long time, but this advice just blew my mind! It complements every aspect of singing. I think this is the No.1 thing that singers should master and then build everything onto that. This was so simple, but very powerfull, I'm very thankfull for that.... Greetings from Belgrade, Serbia
Ahh man, the reverb in the room was kind of messing up the great harmony....that was great at :15 to 17:, the end high harmony by the female I believe..beautiful...
A good singer can convey musical information with or without accompaniment. The best singers don't need instruments, backing tracks, or any other musical input to move you with their sound.
Oh i love what micheal said about range like whitney houston did with the I Will Always Love You Song live she hits notes so high it took me a week to hit lol.
To me great singing is having command of your voice to control tone, riffs and being able to emotionally convey the song to draw people in. I like a variety of singers but my all time favorite singer whom I feel embodied all the things aforementioned is the late great Ella Fitzgerald. I absolutely love her singing.
One question!! :) Michael was talking about live singing, and improvisation.. Is that something that anybody can learn, or not?? Because, for example.. I saw one amasing french girl Caroline Costa (you should really hear her voice and her cover Elle ).. When I try to play with my notes like that, and giving my versions of song .. Somethimes i'm goin' out of tune.. :( Its a shame.. She is 14, and has a feeling, and i'm 18, and i'm not.. :( What i'm trying to ask is , is that feeling developable?
Love the show. Great idea. 5:55 - 6:05 lmbo. Michael stopped Tina mid breath. A good singer to me is someone with vocal dimension as well as range. Dimension as in ease of belting being done as effortlessly as softly singing a melody. I love the belting though. Loved Whitney in her prime, Kelly Clarkson during and a while after American Idol, and David Phelps, he's just ridiculous. Also love Melonie Daniels' voice up until her mix into soprano. Sistah can belt.
soul baby. if you got soul you already got me. it don't matter how high you can go or how fast you can riff or run. all you need is soul. no soul equals no substance
Know your own voice, capabilities, flexibility and uttermost important is knowing yourself and combine them to create your own uniqueness from your self.
great singer? - Effortless/power, great control, good ears! Like Pavarotti or Celine Dion - Smart usage of vibrato (no too much like Beyonce) - Finding a comfort zone (range) a stay here - and obviously things like timber and emotions
For the Q & A, what makes a singer great to me is what Tina B. said - emotion - drawing me in, also a singer's tone, range, power and control, as someone else commented below.
You guys are CRAY-ZAY, and so am I! LOL :Love the show! It's GREAT that you created this show to give props to other singers and just talk about singing and other topics as well. I have so much love for y'all!!! ♥♥♥ Keep up the good stuff!
To me what makes a good singer is 1.) Emotion, 2.) Control, and 3.) Originality.... There's too many singers out there who are influenced by certain singers and you can tell cause they try to imitate their sound. That annoys me alot!!!! There's already a Christina, there's already a Mariah, there's already a Beyonce... Find your own sound.
@Dezzy23 I agree with you. Nothing's wrong with being inspired by another artist, but blatantly trying to sound like someone else does no one any good. I wish more people would appreciate the unique beauty of their own voices, instead of trying to mimic the beauty of others.
@Dezzy23 Uggghhh! I agree! Being Filipino, I know there a lot of female Filipino singers who try too hard to be the original when they cover Mariah, Whitney, etc. Being inspired is totally okay, but imitation is not going to get you to your full potential. Despite this though, I confess that I fall into copying my fav artists' voice from time to time but I have made it my goal to find my own voice, it's kind of my natural tendency to imitate what I'm hearing :P
Hi guys, love the show and the playfulness. This is a great idea, creating discussion via a nice little impromptu show. I think a good singer, is someone unique and genuine. When you hear them, they sing something that you don't doubt is them. A perfect generic rock or pop sounding singer, or punk pop, or country, is not gonna make it in with the greats. You gotta be you through and through and I find that's a difficult thing to achieve!
sir eric could you please make a vid showing how to execute that really fast run Scott hoyang did :) in the parts " it's written all over your faacee~ " PLEASE? cus im into those kind of singing but whenever i try the same run i always fail in singing some of the notes so i end up having a sloppy run :( . thx. in advance :)
@TheR00Z Thanks! We want u guys to feel relaxed. These days, everyone is so damn afraid of being JUDGED that they miss out on the sheer joy of singing. Making music is supposed to be an enjoyable experience.

We should never let anyone take away the joy of singing from us, because without joy.. what's the point in singing?
Yay! I'm looking forward to follow this show! I just have to say, I have been using your warmups for over a year now, and they're absolutely great! I've put some videoes up myself of me singing. I know i have a lot of stuff to work on, but if you could give me some tips, that would be great! -- Thank you again for all the help you have provided me, and all other singers out there, with concerning warmups and other techniques!
YO Eric you gotta look up this dude named Phill Wade. This dude is amazing, his videos are amazing. My favorite video is his 12th jam session its awesome.
To me a good singer is someone that has vocal range and vocal control. Also someone that can make me go THERE(where ever they are emotionally during the song) when I listen to them sing the song.
Hey Eric, I love watching your channel. Anyway, I just wanted to suggest the singer by the name of SHASHAJONES !!! I lovee her. She can sing her butt off AND she writes her own original songs as well. PLEASEE check her outt. I think she will greatly appreciate it.(:
I would love to hear you talk about 'projecting' the sound right at 'the sweet spot' with the use of good articulation, and tongue position. I know that you pointed out the NG position of the tongue.. but im just curious, i hope to hear from you.
I have a suggestion for the next vid!! :D Listen up ^^: Pronunciaton (Am I spelling this right? lol) I see several artists having their tong flat while singing, even at high notes like Eric Benet, and pulling up their upper lip 'the cry'. While Pavarotti has an arch in his tongue while singing which I've seen in Nessun Dorma.
I've got a question that's been on my mind lately and this is for Eric or any other accomplished singer; when did you find out you were good at singing. Not when did you know you wanted to sing, but when did you tell yourself "yes, I am a good singer"
Emotion first. Something about how someone connects to the words of a well written song clicks for me. Some vocalists have raspy voices & some are big belters. I love it all when the emotion is in it. You can tell if they don't know what they are singing about.
Nice show idea btw. I'll be tuning in!
You know i love you guys though so that was a given. Gotta link up one day still! I'mma rent a car & start driving over! lol
aFTER FORTY years of imagining i was a singer, i am now actually becoming a good singer because i have been practicing a singing lessons cd. i have alot of original songs, more in a rock genre. all i ever did was play on the street. go to my channel to see a "Undiscovered street musician", Judgy...
I like singers that can convey emotion well. While I like singers who don't have really strong voices like Maria Mena and Regina Spektor, I find myself more drawn to singers who have powerful voices like Tiffany Evans, Jessie J, and Charice. I really like singers who riff tastefully. I, also, like singers who don't always sing about sex & drugs.
This is my new favorite show on here! You guys are great! And what makes a good singer to me is artistry, someone who isnt afraid to step out of the box a bit and do something creative with a song. :)
what makes a singer great is definitely talent and knowledge of their voice and how to sing well and healthily, but something that matters just as much is their ability to communicate with their audience through their music, and their drive to sing and their love for it. :-)
@NickVmusic1 WHOAAAAA!!!!! Slow down there, Judgie-McJudgington! We are not "showing off". We're just having FUN. Is it suddenly not OK for music to be fun? You music snobs kill me. We've all spent many years developing our instruments, and we enjoy using them - BY GOLLY we've earned it! Furthermore, I've dedicated my life to helping people LIKE YOU realize their full potential with FREE vocal advice. Get over yourself.
Awesome show, guys!! Definitely part of a balanced breakfast, yo... As far as what makes a good singer: Vulnerabillity and emotional honesty.... we all know thats where the real power comes from!!!
good lyrical flow makes any singer sound great, but i love singers that know how and when to use vibrato to the point where it sounds beautiful and not overdone
There are so many different type of singers that I like but I think there's an almost intangible element that makes them actually great! It's a mix of so many things but I guess most important would be interpretation. Fantasia comes to mind; no matter what she sings, it's always on point.
What a beautifull harmonies! You guys are amazing! I'm a mexican performer! I sing mariachi ay ay ay mamacita!!!,me llamo Ivonne and I would like to get some training ma vocal has some quality! But I think I could became a great singer!! Can u help me get ur riffs and runs dvd's? Ill pay, I really need to start soon!I live in NY and u can visit ma channel! Give me some fee back plis! Thanks
I believe artistry is the most important skill a singer can posses. A beautiful voice is not everything. But being able to inject yourself into a song (by style, emotion, altering the lyrics and melody etc) is not something every singer can do, which is of course unfortunate. Bob Dylan is great example of such an artist, he had no beautiful voice or efficient technique, but he was a terrific singer.
a great singer is one who is able to convey the meaning of a song with her outward expressions;facial, emotional etc. and can can manipulate their voice but do it at the right time and not too much of it.
Hey everyone! I think tone, range, and having control of your voice are all key points to being a great singer, but I agree with Ms. TinaB, emotion is really what captivates me and makes me want to continue to listen. I've been watching a young man by the name of Durand Benarr. I believe you all will be thoroughly impressed with his vocal abilit.
I love it when a singer can convey the emotion of the song. Even if the lyrics can not be understood (eg. another language) you can still get a sense of what the song is about :)
@melodic21 - I recently saw Chrisette Michele in concert and she was GREAT! I loved it. She exudes passion and her personality is contagious...her runs, tone, everything...I would love to see her live again...she sounds great on CD, but see her live if you can!
Awesome show. The laughin' technique really works. What makes a great singer to me...ummm. I love jazz singers..ppl can scat & that tone. Ppl who can manipulate there voice if that makes since. Pls look up mishal moore, rochelle hanson, jenny suk on youtube. They are my examples...rising stars. Thx Eric...pls teach me that jazzy scat & tone. =)
What makes a singer is you seriously without you, have no music So Have fun and bring it the way it comes out!

I think a GREAT singer is everything; emotion, range, belting, all of those components are essential to being a "great" singer...

Texture of the voice , control of power (belt), musical choices and application of runs-make a great singer to me. ex. Layla Hathaway

I think voice control is what makes a singer a good or bad singer...

good lyrical flow makes any singer sound great, but i love singers that know how and when to use vibrato to the point where it sounds beautiful and not overdone

There are so many different type of singers that I like but I think there's an almost intangible element that makes them actually great! It's a mix of so many things but I guess most important would be interpretation. Fantasia comes to mind; no matter what she sings, it's always on point.
Eron Anthony (Easings) is a good up and comer.
