well, color came out in the mid 50's but most could not afford it til late 50's earlie 60's. musics got that 40's earlie 50's feel. im gonna say 48 to 52. somewhere in there.
Actually, color film was available in the 1910's, and there were a few silent movies made in color, or had at least a scene or two in color. But like you said, most producers could not afford it since it was expensive. Black and White was a cheaper option that most directors were stuck with until the 1960's.

i have a copy of one of those from turn of 20th century,no name for it on videotape.
they also had coloured photos from around 1905 called autochrome.
