I HATE it when people cough or moan. Or do a cough- moanish sound. Don't know how to describe it really.

im forever wearing headphones, at home, at work (luckily i do admin and can usually get away with it), in town, i do try and put up with stuff if at restaurants or family gatherings. i hate noisy children, i hate people thumping when they walk, dragging their heels is an absolute killer! door slamming, some people laughing, another girl at work has a thing for hiccuping very loudly with her mouth open, licking their fingers after they eat.. it never ends! please comment on these x
I actually took a ladys pen from her work desk and binned it, she continually clicked it, i was so close to saying something many times, in my head i was fantasising about ripping the pen from her hand and stamping on it and smashing it, then shouting shut up in her face. but obviosuly i couldnt do that so after a week or so i took it and tried to be away from conversation if she mentioned her missing pen!
Sorry to post again, but through all these posts...is there any advice? My closest friends do not know I suffer from this, and though most are well-mannered and eat "normally", I just can't tune out their noise. How could I tell them? I don't want people to tip-toe around me, or avoid spending time with me because they don't want to enrage me, but at the same time I hate how my mood automatically spoils once any offending noise happens. If I had kids, what would I do if they made these sounds?!
@coookieeface to u i am exactly the same i telled my best friend about it well ive tried but she is not the sharpest knife in the drawer i dont want ppl to know because i thhink being called a freak and a crazy gurl is already good anought kets not go to sick gurl but in a way i went them to know the suffering
Just to add, I think people still need to learn manners/sensitivity toward others, especially in situations where even NORMAL people would expect quiet, like during an exam or presentation. Nobody likes it when people chew/smack gum during an exam, tap their pencil, breathe loud as if they're exercising, etc. Even "normal" people get frustrated at this and lose concentration, so it's about 100x worse (I'd say immeasurably worse, due to the rage) for those of us suffering from Misophonia.
Thank you for making this video. I'm in my 20s and have had this since I was a little kid, yelling at my parents to stop making such horrible noises. But it wasn't THEIR issue, it was MINE. They weren't being loud, but it seems like the slurping, smacking, crunching, snoring, etc. is amplified and made to drive me insane. I'm a very peaceful person, but these noises make me wish such awful things. Until now I felt like nobody understood just how much anxiety and rage these noises make us feel.
To me it is a lot worse with close people, yes, specially my mum. I do feel like described in the video the hatred is so high sometimes that I do feel like killing yes and I feel so guilty but I just can't help this, is that bad, I want to scream... I have this problem too. I have such a hard time at work. I get irrate! I start slamming things around, slamming my office door. I finally have to leave my office and go outside for a while. I take some ativan which helps my anxiety. Sometimes I can barely get through the work day...

It really does rule your life (I'm 40). As I watch the video, all I can say is, "ME TOO! I GET IT!!! YEP, SAME HERE!!" I have a cousin w/ the same thing. Thanks for the video!!!

@strpure2833 Im 13 too, your lucky you can eat dinner away from your family, I get annoyed at ALL eating sounds, and sounds like biting nails, swallowing drink and food even people breathing. I just look at them and go completely mental. I just found out about this and I did some research and read somewhere that this can also be sign of high intelligence and matureness. I definitely agree with the mature part. I seem to have had it as long as I can remember. Im glad I'm not the only 13 year old.
@musiecs sometimes breathing bothers me too... i have to eat in my room or ill go insane...at family dinners i have to ask if i can eat in another room also... at restraunts i sometimes have to use my headphones which really sucks... also schools the worst... all these bitchy kids like "ANYONE GOT A PIECE OF GUM?! I have had it for 40 years. I now explain to my friends and I wear ear plugs when I go out to eat or at movie theaters. I found out about it about 8 months ago and thought I was the only person in the world with this problem.

thank you SO much for posting this, im 25 and feel like a bitch all the time for not being able to have an explanation for my noise sensitivity. I try headphones and am told im being rude, I sleep with my arm distorted over my ears to create a suction, i frequently run to the bathroom and run water to have a moment away, any door openings, utensil scraping, typing especially, dogs barking, train tracks, ive literally become agoraphobic. i have panic attacks and just want to go deaf at times!!!
@chirpz1999 you and me both bitch; i just wear earbuds anyway untill i have another solution because people realy dont know how much rudeness they themselves get away with. if they complain, tell them your issue. if they have a problem with it, get in their face. dont take a swing, but make the point that theyre not going to like you if they dont respect your issues. i find that the more i hold things in, the worse it is for me.
THANK YOU for posting this video. I cannot believe my insanity has a name. I'm 43 years old and have been suffering with this since childhood. I used to get so mad at my brother when he would smack his lips while watching TV, and my parents would tell me to just leave the room if it was bothering me. I spent a lot of time in my room. Strangers don't bother me as much as my family members. Have you found anything helpful besides earplugs? I have prayed for God to make me deaf.
have you heard about a new website that has been put up for this condition? soundsensitivity.info
The website discusses the idea of Selective Sound Sensitivity or any other name you would like to name it as, I suggest you have a look. There is a forum there as well where you can join and share your experiences with others. I have also found a way to cope, even better, I have found a way to reduce the reactions, the spark. Its on the forum, GOOD LUCK! R
I think it's more down to the feeling of being disrespected by bad manners. Inane noise bothers me. My dad is the worst offender, he has every disgusting and noisy habit I can think of but the worst is the chomping and lip smacking. Sounds like keyboard typing are OK because they're necessary sounds - its noise that shouldn't be generated at all that generates the anger.
I have the EXACT same hate for bad drivers cutting me up, or people with bad body odour who decide to sit next to you.
For everyone who has posted and believes they have this, consider joining the site sound sensitivity dot info. I believe our strength is in numbers. And of course we can all support each other on the forum.
I am sooo glad I found this. I am 16 now, I think it started when I was around 10, with the sound of my mom eating and I now have various triggers. But I just found out I'm not the only one :)
My mom gets upset when I copy her (or my dad's) movements or sounds which is perfectly understandable, but now I can show her what it is and hopefully get some understanding.
What I hate the most is that the triggers are the strongest by people I love/like. It's really frustrating...
Unfortunately, the condition likely will never be cured, or even treated. If it has to do with nerve malfunctions, it would be extremely difficult to treat. Plus, because the condition is so rare, the funding is extremely limited. If I wanted to find a treatment for it, I'd have to begin research myself, frankly.
Dude, the worst is mexican restaurants. Those CHIPS. Movie theaters: POPCORN. Recently I went to see Tron: The Legacy and I couldn't fully enjoy the movie because this guy a few seat levels down was chewing on his straw.
If you see a specialist about getting some implant-earphones who give a low level white noise in the inner ear, cuts out alot but your hearing still ok to a certain level.
My triggers : lip smacking (involving eating or otherwise), gum popping, nose whistling, heavy breathing (really any kind of sound involving breathing, which has led to some negative feelings toward smokers and obese people), shoe scuffling, silverware clanking and scraping on plates, crinkly bags and crunching sounds, sniffing (OH GOD I HATE SNIFFING), people typing too hard on keyboards, and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm missing. I also HATE repetitive visual stuff. this sucks. : (
I hate hearing most people speak because of the sticky saliva clicking along with breathing sounds. I hate people who chew loudly in restaurants as well. I need to medicate with a drink just to relax.
Just discovered yesterday that this is actually a condition after googling 'can't stand listening to people eating'. !I've had problems with this since I was a child and I totally understand the rage you feel when the noise gets into your head and takes over everything so that you can't concentrate or relax. I get so tense I have told people that I can't bear to listen to them eat, or have had to get up and move away. Slurping, throat clearing and even breathing affect me aswell.
Has anyone here ever tried treatment from audiologist? I really want to try it but I'm a bit skeptical of the benefits. I don't want to waste the money.
I have to admit, the constant sound of that bird chirping in the background of the video started to get to me. I almost had to chuckle to myself. God this sucks....
People just don't listen until they hear it from an expert. Since I was 4 I've had tinnitus and around when I turned 13 my tinnitus got much worse and I developed hyperacusis and misophonia though I didn't know the names, I just thought I was bothered by people eating. When my tinnitus got bad enough I got my mom to take me to a doctor who diagnosed me with misophonia. Now my family respects my requests for them to chew with their mouths closed, avoid family dinners and eat less crunchy food.
it's so amazing you actually feel the way i feel. Like its extremly crazy.
Like EXACTLY HOW I FEEEL.
even though you have to suffer everysingle day of your life, when you cant get away... just bring a i pod with you EVERYWHERE !!!! keep it in your pocket and turn that bitch up as loud as you can.
I pretty much always leave the room whenever people are eating, and sometimes I get called out on it. I don't really offer an explanation anymore, because I've never met anybody who's understood, even a little. Most people will actually do it more when I let them know it bothers me, even so called friends. It's so annoying that it happens and I wish the cause was better understood and/or there was a cure or viable treatment.
You could not have described this any better. I have repeatedly said similar things to my friends and family when I leave the room while they eat. The "it's not you, it's me" is all too familiar, but I still think everyone thinks I'm just kidding around. Drives me nuts! If you continue to organize folks to get some research done please let me know how I can help.
I almost cried when I saw this. Hearing that someone out there has this is great. Everyday almost every moment I am affected by this. I believe I have it in such a strong way! Before I took anti-anxiety medicine I had it so bad that if I heard even a muffle of a sound I would lose it. I hate anything to do with eating even clanking of forks and spoons on plates. I cant stand to hear breathing, wheezing, snoring, when people say "mmm". Thank you for making me feel like I'm not alone!
so I have this - like crazy. my husband hates it because I can't handle him breathing too loud! I lose it. about tons of other things, too. I can't go to movies, etc.
I am so glad you made this video! I just started researching this last night, and found out that I am not alone in this. It has been difficult because family members or friends just think I'm being mean when I tell them I can't stand the sound of them chewing, or get angry at gum smacking. I also get angry when people sniff or clear their throat. I thought I was just an irritable person, but it makes me feel better already to know I'm not the only one. I've been living with this for years.
There was this article in the montreal newspaper where I live that talked about misophonia a couple of weeks ago. And before that I though I was alone. My mom kept telling me to read the article but to me it was just something about people that were "annoyed" of certain sounds, so I ignored it. But then one night I broke down, crying, cause I couldn't take it anymore. So I read the article, sobbing all at the same time, cause it was all about me, about what I have. I'm so happy I'm not alone !
Thank you singularityrush for posting this very personal video. I have suffered from misophonia (or 4S) since I was 12. I am now 55 and I still cringe with rage whenever I hear someone slurping or chewing noisily or with their mouth open (even the word 'slurping' gives me the shivers). Your video and the comments may help me explain the condition to others.
I am laughing big time, and at the same time, i am relieved. I can recognize myself in this video and in most comments people have made. Since i am young (now 35) i have this problem,. The worse sounds to me are eating noises, especially hard food crunch (carrots, celeries, chips, etc). I also become irritated with squeeking floors, squeeking doors, bag noises. Over the year, i am better at controlling my rage, as I rationnalise things better.
Thanks for making your videos and explaining that it's not just finding a noise irritating it actually makes you wanna smash things and cry.
I today stumbled upon this term as I am sitting in my office now and earlier a workmate was crunching crisps really loudly and I randomly looked on google to see if people felt the same and came across hyperacusis and eventually misophonia and it describes exactly how i feel.
I've been experiencing this since around the age of 12 I think, I'm 20 now.
I have this as well. Mostly with cracking/popping gum and other mouth sounds. Repetitive sounds bother me as well. Is anyone else bothered by whistling? It really makes me crazy too. I don't know if that is part of the disorder.
Whistling? Yep. And leg jiggling. And the sight of someone's jaw moving as they silently chew gum, and.... there are lots of triggers. Chewing noises is the "classic" core trigger, but many other sounds (and sights) may be triggers too.
I read a navy manual once that said whistling was banned on board ships partly because it drove other people on board crazy. That manual was an oasis of sanity to me ("See! I am right! Whistling in public *should* be banned!") Just make me dictator for a day...
Man, we are on the SAME Page! My husband has restless leg syndrome and at night he drives me crazy with his jiggling legs...I kick him somethimes...hahaha, but I can't sleep. Whistling is horrible and should be banned...I was on a cruise one time and this old man was whistling away...I said out loud, "Oh my God, no one wants to hear that!" I don't think he heard me because he didn't stop. It is so good to hear that I am not the only one and I think that helps me deal with this issue better!
Thank you for the support and the background information about the Navy manual...that is really interesting. I bet many more people have this than we know. Maybe it is not an illness, but an issue of other people just being completely ill-mannered. Oh, oddly enough it does not bother me when my dogs and some other animals are making loud noises when they are eatingbut barking dogs do bother me.
yeah dude, its the whistling for me. Talk about instant rage. Thing is, does not bother me on TV for example...only "live" shows. You can form an orderly Q behind me as I have dibs on dictatorship.
Yes also to whistling (see my comment to Part I). I get caught very uncomfortably between being overtaken by tremendous rage and realizing that most of world doesn't consider whistling in public to be any kind of egregious offense. I'd love to scream at the person to stop whistling, but that wouldn't be socially appropriate. Is anyone else bothered by hearing others' music devices, like through apartment walls?
Okay.....44 years old and just realized today that there is a name to what I have been experiencing for 20+ years. Thanks for the video.........I am also one who moves at movies, restaurants. Gum chewing is the worst, but so are things like pen tapping and clicking, foot tapping....anything repetitive. And, chewing in general is the worst. So, let's share therapy information. I appreciate you stepping forward and posting this!
Hi There, My sister suffers from the same condition. It's actually called Selective Sound Sensitivity Disorder or 4S. There is a yahoo group with approx 1000 members with this condition, may I suggest that you join this group if you have not already done so? My sister has found the group very supportive.
I have this, and i can't stant the sound of lip smacking. it's annoying as heck and it distracts me when i try to concentrate on doing work in school or other stuff.
Just posted to Part I. Thanks again for your making these videos. I've given many a pen-tapper a dirty look. When people (usually teenagers) "play the drums" with their fingers or hands...wow...that puts me over the edge. With people I've known, sometimes I've pressed my hands atop theirs to "make it stop." The intrusiveness, the invasiveness, the repetitiveness, the inability to stop it...it's torture... singularityrush - are you still using your YouTube email? - would like to correspond.
I'm a 20-year-old from Minnesota who has misophonia. It's ruled my life since before I can remember. I found a therapist who specializes in tinnitus and misophonia, and I've been seeing him for the past five months. He's confident that I will get better. For now, dorm life is so difficult. I carry clay earplugs wherever I go, and wear them whenever I'm in my room because of the loud guys who live above me. Finding a place to study on campus is nearly impossible. I hope so much to get better!
My 12 year old has had misophonia since he was 6 years of age and it is specific to my (his father) chewing, drinking or lip smacking. It tends to be more pronounced when he is tired, stressed. He typically either pulls clothing over his ears, avoids me when I'm eating and exaggeratedly mimics me when eat to let me know how upset he is becoming.
I have misophonia. The sound of chewing drives me INSANE. I'm 13 and it is unbearable!! I don't sit with my family for dinner because of the chewing. It just makes me feel so angry and sad.
Just wondering, does anyone else scratch their palm or arm or thigh or anything when they hear the sound? Because I do and it makes it minorly (very very very VERY minorly) more bearable.
I know a 16 year old girl who has misophonia. She used to scratch her face angrily whenever people sniffed near her. Several other sounds upset her too. I have misophonia too and I sometimes have to pinch myself hard or dig my fingernails into my skin in order to distract my mind from the sound. I prefer the pain of long hard pinching to the sound of someone chewing - it is that bad.
I used to work with people with mental disorders. I'm sure there are drugs that would help, but I would bet money that a disciplined schedule would help more in the long run - a daily routine. I would stay away from violent movies, tv, etc., or things that would aggravate your mental faculties.
Knowing nothing of your spiritual life, and this may sound wild, but it may be spiritual in nature - a demonic 'cling-on' for lack of a better word.
I have the same thing (mildly) with mouth noises - an irrational anger. I'm pretty sure it's a mental disconnect, kind of like when you touch your eyebrow and feel a sensation in your neck or some strange thing that isn't supposed to be. I guess 'disorder' is the correct term.
You are correct! There is not much research on Misophonia, Hyperacusis, Tinitus, and other hearing issues which is not very encouraging when you look at how long we have suffered and how much more of this suffering we will have to endure in the future.
i have had hyperacusisfor 4 yrs now it does cause me o be very short and angry when it is at its worst mine had started when i lost my hearing due to a steam cleaner i was using the dr put me on high doses of steroids that gave me my hearing back but now i am stuck with this! mine is really bad i can open my windows or go out side without ear plugs and thngs are still to loud for me imjust ltting you know your not alone charlene

thank you SO much for posting this, im 25 and feel like a bitch all the time for not being able to have an explanation for my noise sensitivity. I try headphones and am told im being rude, I sleep with my arm distorted over my ears to create a suction, i frequently run to the bathroom and run water to have a moment away, any door openings, utensil scraping, typing especially, dogs barking, train tracks, ive literally become agoraphobic. i have panic attacks and just want to go deaf at times!!!
chirpz1999 9 months ago 11

Emma8887 1 year ago
Unfortunately, the condition likely will never be cured, or even treated. If it has to do with nerve malfunctions, it would be extremely difficult to treat. Plus, because the condition is so rare, the funding is extremely limited. If I wanted to find a treatment for it, I'd have to begin research myself, frankly.

Dude, the worst is mexican restaurants. Those CHIPS. Movie theaters: POPCORN. Recently I went to see Tron: The Legacy and I couldn't fully enjoy the movie because this guy a few seat levels down was chewing on his straw.

If you see a specialist about getting some implant-earphones who give a low level white noise in the inner ear, cuts out alot but your hearing still ok to a certain level.
hemlock68 1 year ago
My triggers : lip smacking (involving eating or otherwise), gum popping, nose whistling, heavy breathing (really any kind of sound involving breathing, which has led to some negative feelings toward smokers and obese people), shoe scuffling, silverware clanking and scraping on plates, crinkly bags and crunching sounds, sniffing (OH GOD I HATE SNIFFING), people typing too hard on keyboards, and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm missing. I also HATE repetitive visual stuff. this sucks. : (
vivafulci 1 year ago

JoeDeceiver 1 year ago

Tiedyebutterfly09 1 year ago
so I have this - like crazy. my husband hates it because I can't handle him breathing too loud! I lose it. about tons of other things, too.

Your video and the comments may help me explain the condition to others.
himbo754 2 years ago
I am laughing big time, and at the same time, i am relieved. I can recognize myself in this video and in most comments people have made. Since i am young (now 35) i have this problem,. The worse sounds to me are eating noises, especially hard food crunch (carrots, celeries, chips, etc). I also become irritated with squeeking floors, squeeking doors, bag noises. Over the year, i am better at controlling my rage, as I rationnalise things better.
maffystovsky 2 years ago

I don't know if that is part of the disorder.
mktthatsme2009 2 years ago
Whistling?
I am right! Whistling in public *should* be banned!") Just make me dictator for a day...
himbo754 2 years ago
Man, we are on the SAME Page! My husband has restless leg syndrome and at night he drives me crazy with his jiggling legs...I kick him somethimes...hahaha, but I can't sleep. Whistling is horrible and should be banned...I was on a cruise one time and this old man was whistling away...I said out loud, "Oh my God, no one wants to hear that!" I don't think he heard me because he didn't stop. It is so good to hear that I am not the only one and I think that helps me deal with this issue better!
mktthatsme2009 2 years ago
Thank you for the support and the background information about the Navy manual...that is really interesting. I bet many more people have this than we know. Maybe it is not an illness, but an issue of other people just being completely ill-mannered. Oh, oddly enough it does not bother me when my dogs and some other animals are making loud noises when they are eatingbut barking dogs do bother me.
mktthatsme2009 2 years ago
yeah dude, its the whistling for me. Talk about instant rage. Thing is, does not bother me on TV for example...only "live" shows. You can form an orderly Q behind me as I have dibs on dictatorship.
aquabilly 2 years ago
I'm glad you mentioned that just the sight of someone chewing gum is a trigger for you... Same here!!! Arghh
iRiSHxRiDER 1 year ago

Jegudiel21ZX 2 years ago

HeidiJeanne 3 years ago
My 12 year old has had misophonia since he was 6 years of age and it is specific to my (his father) chewing, drinking or lip smacking. It tends to be more pronounced when he is tired, stressed. He typically either pulls clothing over his ears, avoids me when I'm eating and exaggeratedly mimics me when eat to let me know how upset he is becoming.
GHalverson123 3 years ago
I have misophonia. The sound of chewing drives me INSANE. I'm 13 and it is unbearable!! I don't sit with my family for dinner because of the chewing. It just makes me feel so angry and sad.
Just wondering, does anyone else scratch their palm or arm or thigh or anything when they hear the sound? Because I do and it makes it minorly (very very very VERY minorly) more bearable.
(:
BellaRose5 3 years ago

LegacyHDV 3 years ago
I have the same thing (mildly) with mouth noises - an irrational anger. I'm pretty sure it's a mental disconnect, kind of like when you touch your eyebrow and feel a sensation in your neck or some strange thing that isn't supposed to be. I guess 'disorder' is the correct term.

Hi, i want some information about your sickness because i think i've got the same sickness...

You are correct! There is not much research on Misophonia, Hyperacusis, Tinitus, and other hearing issues which is not very encouraging when you look at how long we have suffered and how much more of this suffering we will have to endure in the future.
