Jane Espenson who was writing for Buffy during the Sixth Season also worked on BSG's Fourth Season. According to sources she worked on every episode so that may be where the connection came from. I had almost the same thought when I first say this episode too.
Ha, this song was playing in my head as I watched the finale. Very well done, and a nice song matching that ending! Now if only the next episode would come out... ;)

Okay Ron Moore must have talked to Joss Whedon when he planed the "first arrival on Earth scene"... song and images fit amazingly well.
And that Lee uses these exact words later....... cannot be a coincidence ;).
