This was an "innocent passage" through Soviet territorial waters in accordance with "Admiralty Law" or "Law of the Sea". A simple straight line passage by any ship, including warships, through straits through territorial waters is expressly allowed by maritime law as long as it is not an attack. The Soviets took the opportunity to deliberately collide with the Yorktown in violation of this law. Ramming back would have been an act of war and that's what the Soviets tried to provoke.

In the Black Sea, Soviet territory, Soviets were the overwhelming marine and air power (don't forget their air forces nearby) and could sink the Yorktown at will. The provocation maneuver was to get the Yorktown's commander to deviate from Admiralty Law conditions that allowed the Yorktown's transit through the Black Sea such that they could legitimately interdict the Yorktown or escalate the confrontation to Soviet advantage.

US is not a country which can say, 'OK, you had a legal reason to sink our ship.' They were never treated as such by USSR. At least, US used a chance to demonstrate that they not only have, but also will use a nuclear weapon. While USSR did not use it even when Chine attacked.

Very little was known or predictable about the radiation and fallout consequences until they were used. Without that experience, the Cold War might have resulted in the US, Soviets or some other country using nuclear weapons when they had become 100 to 1,000 times more powerful.

In the case of KAL 007, what was legal was not morally right

The Yorktown commander would have been well aware of this or he woudln't have been commanding a cruiser on a freedom of navigation mission through Soviet territory. He did the right thing by not responding in any way.
USA military ships, due to overwhelming military domination of USA, practised invading Russian territorial waters for deep radio prospecting soviet territory. I see the Russian captain forgot (as normal) that a bigger ship will pull a smaller ship into it if enough room is not between the two ships. Just by the tape you can see the Russian Navy is at fault. But this isn't the first time this has happened.

We were exercising our right of innocent passage - I was there on the USS Caron and also have the whole video tape of the incident. Funny thing is, they sent a fricken frigate to ram into our destroyer - could have put a band aid on it to cover the tiny dent they put there. Also as for the Yorktown - there was no fire - there was slight damage to the harpoon missle - if there was a explosion, then it would've taken out the russian ship along with it

This was an "innocent passage" through Soviet territorial waters in accordance with "Admiralty Law" or "Law of the Sea". A simple straight line passage by any ship, including warships, through straits through territorial waters is expressly allowed by maritime law as long as it is not an attack. The Soviets took the opportunity to deliberately collide with the Yorktown in violation of this law. Ramming back would have been an act of war and that's what the Soviets tried to provoke.

In the Black Sea, Soviet territory, Soviets were the overwhelming marine and air power (don't forget their air forces nearby) and could sink the Yorktown at will. The provocation maneuver was to get the Yorktown's commander to deviate from Admiralty Law conditions that allowed the Yorktown's transit through the Black Sea such that they could legitimately interdict the Yorktown or escalate the confrontation to Soviet advantage.

US is not a country which can say, 'OK, you had a legal reason to sink our ship.' They were never treated as such by USSR. At least, US used a chance to demonstrate that they not only have, but also will use a nuclear weapon. While USSR did not use it even when Chine attacked.

@DenisSG1981 The Soviet motivation was two things: 1) Discourage legal but annoying transits like this one by making them risky, especially to countries besides the US 2) If possible, provoke the Yorktown's commander into doing something that would clearly violate provisions of the Admiralty Law that allowed Yorktown to make this transit. so the Soviets could legally insist on boarding and towing it out of the Black Sea with the threat to disable the Yorktown if the commander didn't comply.

@jalind1 Insofar as experience with nuclear weapons goes, it is probably a very good thing that everyone got a good look at the really evil devastation and death they cause when they were very small. Very little was known or predictable about the radiation and fallout consequences until they were used. Without that experience, the Cold War might have resulted in the US, Soviets or some other country using nuclear weapons when they had become 100 to 1,000 times more powerful.

The conventional and massive incindiary bombing of Japan commanded by Robert McNamara and Curtis LeMay totally destroyed many major cities and killed far more military and civilians than the two atomic bombs did and had no effect on convincing the Japanese government to end the war.

It was the two bombs with intelligence suggesting the US had more combined with the Manchurian invasion that caused consensus to accept Potsdam, i.e. the decision to surrender in accordance with Allied demands in the Potsdam Declaration. Hostilites, for the most part, ended on 10 August 1945 except with the Soviets with whom hostilities continued until 2 September 1945.

@jalind1 The US had at least two more atomic bombs that were going to be available, one on 19 August 1945 and another by early September 1945. Tokyo was the top candidate target for the 3rd bomb although a definite target had not been chosen. Japanese interrogation of a captured B-29 pilot extracted false information that the US had about 100 atomic bombs. Whether the Japanese really believed that or not is conjecture, but it created serious concerns about how many the US had readily available.

Union, as annoying as it was. Universally recognized Admiralty Law made the Yorktown's Black Sea transit legal even if it was very annoying. Otherwise the Soviets would have responded very differently. For example, the Soviets legally shot down civilian (KAL 007) and military (Powers in a U2) aircraft violating Soviet territory. In the case of KAL 007, what was legal was not morally right

The Yorktown commander would have been well aware of this or he woudln't have been commanding a cruiser on a freedom of navigation mission through Soviet territory. He did the right thing by not responding in any way.

The russians were fed up with US navy ships entering their waters so they had PLANNED this. The captain didn't just so happen to decide to do it. Gorbachev himself approved this long before the incident.
Comes to show lack of respect of both parties towards each other since US and USSR at the day couldn't agree what constitutes the boundaries at sea.

We were exercising our right of innocent passage - I was there on the USS Caron and also have the whole video tape of the incident. Funny thing is, they sent a fricken frigate to ram into our destroyer - could have put a band aid on it to cover the tiny dent they put there. Also as for the Yorktown - there was no fire - there was slight damage to the harpoon missle - if there was a explosion, then it would've taken out the russian ship along with it

A lot of this crap went on in the Cold War and it still goes on with China and other countries. Their Soviet motivation was to strongly discourage Innocent Passage transits of the Black Sea by the US and other countries.
