The grills are for a fresh air system into the cockpit. Behing the nostrils are fresh air boxes that lead to vents on the dashboard.

i don't get why these cars have a front grill ..it haves the motor in the rear .its air cooled ....so why does it need the front grill

It goes to a vent inside the car at the base of the windshield. Thats how you defog in the winter, you open the vent and let cold air defog it.

It was fairly loud. There was something not quite right about that engine. The video makes it seem worse than it was though.

It was indeed a rough engine. The owner at the time wrecked it about a week after this clip was made.
After a brief time with a stock 1600 in there, it's now running an absolute beast of an engine. I forget the spec now but it's seriously rapid.
