Exits the Arabic letters, each letter has a way out of the throat and mouth of his own, you can feel the experience in this arrangement from right to left
ع ح هـ خ غ ء ق ك ج ش ض ص س ز ط د ت ظ ذ ث ل ن ف ب م و ا ي .
Interesing, that in Hebrew it's ארוס , with an Alef not 3ayn عروس I think it's the only word where arabic 3ayn corresponds to Hebrew Alef. If somebody knows more such words (Arabic 3ayn-Hebrew Alef or vice versa) , please let me know! And thank you Maha for the best 3ayn explanation I've ever seen!
I know I am a dork for saying this. But, I am glad that my Arabic professor is going to be an old dude. Because I would be VERY unfocused in your class...haha. I now need a throat drop for "choking" myself. :-)
"Choking your self to make the sound?" I don't know, in Chinese culture they will considered that as bad Omen or bad luck, it is similar to pronounce Mandarin (Chinese) word of letter four (4), to pronounce that, you must say, ssssseerk (like choking yourself), that is why number four is really a taboo in chinese culture, it is like the number 13 in the western world. For me as Malay & Muslim, we just reduce the air that coming out of our nose to make the sound A'yn, that is easier than choking.
No, you're wrong, the reason why number 4 is a taboo in Chinese culture is because the Chinese pronunciation for number 4 is very similar to the Chinese pronunciation of death.
When I start with a normal a-sound and then try to restrict the muscle in my throat my voice fades into almost a whisper and I can't finish with that strength that makes the ع sounds so cool. Does anyone else have this problem?
She's right, choking or gagging, constricting the back of the throat really is the only way to make this sound. Yes your throat will hurt because you are using muscles not normally used in our speech, but like with any workout your throat muscles will get used to it.
Now, I want Maha to make one like this but for the ghayn, because that's the most difficult Arabic letter of all! I know it's like the French r, but in words like Raghadan and Nagham (Maha's sister) it's not smooth! lol
I'm having a problem with ع but i think i can pronounce it. I've listened to some native speakers, and I think I've got down their pronunciation, but I still don't know how you are pronouncing your ع. you said u use the uvula, but that would mean i should put the back of my tongue in the same position as ق and غ... is that right? or should I put my tongue in the same place as ح ?
the way i'm doing it is with the same position as ح.
i was in lebanon and i learned arabic i wish you could say me how is my prononciation of this tetter "3ayn" wa choukran and bravo 3ala darsik chi bijannin !
She is really lovely...Anyway the pronounciation of خ is also hard. I've read somewhere it is like the sound of when you moistening eyeglasses. So my advice is to wear sunglasses this summer and practice as often as possible :)
Thanks soooooooo much much much much, u are amazing teacher :) post more videos please, i will be so much happy.. i have a problem to pronunciate all alphabet :D but i keep trying!
I learned to pronounce this letter trying to drag the A sound inward toward my throat, let's remember the letters J and G are uttered from the throat, so I started to take the A sound toward my throat, and I also tried to pronounce the vowel A normally and later immediately in the back of my mouth like a gutural sound to be sure that i am making the sound from my throat and now i can make the 3 sound easily. My lebanese friend says i do it well.
غ is not very difficult to pronounce, it's found in several European languages, it's a French r, but weaker, it's a voiced version of the "ch" found in Loch in Scottish or in German and in Russian. But the ع is much more difficult to pronounce just because it's a very rare sound.
ahlan wa sahlan maha, ana ismee Juan u ana min Uruguay. Ohibbu al lugha al arabyya katheran!!! I love your videos and the way you teach is unbelievable.
I can honestly tell you that i am very lucky to have found your channel :) Keep up the nice work! Ma'a salama!

You are so full of energy... You are enjoying it, you are doing it with passion. Most of all, you are extremely beautiful, with a tinge of naughtiness and sense of humour in you. Keep it up.
all human beings can physically make the same sounds with their voice and mouth. its just a matter of determination so do not be afraid of new sounds in languages.
I think letter ع is one of the most difficult letters to pronounce. I remember teaching my brother when he was in first grade the alphabet, and he memorized them all except ع ^_^
@Rosslikeyou hahaha nooo, she's got it right. It's called your uvula. ('Uvulae' is just the plural.) Some people have to get their tonsils taken out, but I don't think you want to get rid of your uvula! ;D Peace.
Nice introduction to 3ain! Small note however, the phone is not made with uvula, which is the small droplet shaped thing hanging at back of your throat. Arabic has uvular consonants like ق which is made by rising your tongue towards the uvula. ع-sound is depending dialect either pharyngeal or epiglottal fricative where the root of the tongue or the epiglottis is pressed against the pharynx.
lol Maha, you're right: "uvula" (pronounced YOO-vyuh-la) is Latin. It means "little grape". :)
Some linguists say that Ayn is a voiced version of 7aa (ﺡ), like how "d" is a voiced version of "t" or how "z" a voiced version of "s". I don't buy that, I don't hear it as either voiced or as a fricative. It sounds more like a (voiceless) pharyngealized glottal stop.
The sound of A'yn comes from the middle part of the Throat. Qaaf comes from the Uvula area

In my case I don't know how to make the diference when pronouncing the different vocalisations of 3ain:
- with fatha
- with damma and
- with kasra,
and how can I know when is vocalised and when it is not (i.e. with sukun).
I don't know how to recognise and reproduce these different sounds of 3ayn.!!! :-((
Could you explain all these things in a futur video? That would be great!! :-)
