Perhaps this stands as one of the most profound commentaries on Freedom of Speech and of the Press, especially when mapped against his prophetic comments on Net Neutrality, which Americans, in large part unaware, just lost barely a month ago! @ jkiene: Individual freedom plays a major role in my definition of a high standard of living. I'm all for property ownership as well. However, Im not sure if "owning" is the appropriate term to describe the average American's relation to the house he or she lives in. Technically speaking, most peoples houses are owned by their bank. So we are talking about the illusion or prospect of true ownership at best.
Now even this bubble has burst for many during the mortgage crisis because the system was simply not sustainable in the long run (much like many other aspects of the US economy). How much property does the average evicted family own now? Also you forgot to take the different building standards into consideration: What you call a typical American house might not even pass as a woodshed over here.
Apart from that, I find average property size to be a really bad indicator for the comparison of living standards in Europe and the USA. Given the respective density of population thats like comparing apples and oranges.
You may not have thought about it, but if for example every family in my city lived in a house with 1500 square feet of space, there wouldnt be any room left for roads, parks, schools, stores, restaurants or anything else. So that wouldnt really benefit anyones standard of living at all, would it?
Americans on average also drive bigger cars, eat bigger meals and have bigger asses than Europeans. Would you derive a higher standard of living from these facts as well? You may have the space to support such irresponsible behaviour in the States and that would be fine if you found a way not to pollute the entire world and use up all its resources in the process.
But if you tried to transfer this lifestyle to Europe, you would make a complete fool out of yourself, trying to squeeze your Hummer into the average parking space or your super-sized McButt into a public restroom.
Where many people live close together, it becomes obvious much quicker, what kind of behaviour is sound and sustainable or not. From energy use to waste management: The people are immediately confronted with the consequences of their collective lifestyle.
Im sure this also affects the way people treat each other and might explain why modern Europeans are generally more open to diplomacy than aggression as a means to solve conflicts. Even though our society is very competitive, the close proximity to ones neighbors might have led to greater social awareness and a sense of being in the same boat after all.
How can a country have a high standard of living if the same cant be said about everybody that lives in it? In a truly rich country, the poor ought to be relatively well off, too. Otherwise it would merely be a country with some rich people in it. In what way would that be different from any third world dictatorship?
You can call this position communist or socialist all you want. I actually consider myself to be more of a greenish libertarian, but thats beside the point. You might be surprised to find out that I think quite highly of your country, or more precisely the values it was founded on. Ive experienced many cool things and met great people when I used to live and work there. So by no means would I call everything American bad nor do I consider everything to be just swell in Europe. Im actually all for equal opportunity as opposed to forced equality. However, if you truly believe thats what your country provides for its people today, I would seriously have to doubt your mental capacity. Like most Europeans (and many Americans) I have hope in Obamas ability to bring about SOME change and repair SOME of the damage done by the Bush administration. What makes you think that the standard of living is so high in the US? People are employed but get paid peanuts and have no health insurance. Have you ever travelled to the civilized world (i.e. Europe)? The unemployed over here have a higher standard of living than the average US worker. Also there are other factors that make life worth living: Free press, culture, a healthy people and environment, good education for all etc. The US is behind even third world countries in some of these regards.
My definition of High Standard of living is freedom from big govenrment, Property ownership, not apartment living. Not individual restriction. Your arguments would be relevant if media choices were still constrained by the limits of terrestrial broadcast. On the other hand, the modern day reality is internet, wireless, satellite and cable technologies are giving people access to more "channels" than they can possibly manage and absorb. I defy you to come up with a plausible scenario whereby "someone with vast amounts of resources" is going to monopolize literally thousands of commercial media channels.

Nowhere did I say that all opinions should be weighted equally. The point is what is produced in the marketplace of ideas should be allowed to stand or fall on its own merit, without interference from the government. We already have laws on the books to cover libel and slander, as well as predatory and monopolistic behavior. To put it another way, if Amy Goodman was on 50kW flamethrowers instead of Hannity then whack-jobs like McChesney (and their nutty followers) would think everything is fine.
This does not preclude someone with vast amounts of resources from monopolizing the media or influence people in a way that does not benefit society. Any person (Amy Goodman included) has a responsibility of their content and the government should care how these "public" air waves are used. Sophists in Greece should stand as a warning that because someone knows how to appeal to the "market place" of ideas, does not mean they are not dangerous to a democracy(i.e.Adolf Hitler).

However, Im not sure if "owning" is the appropriate term to describe the average American's relation to the house he or she lives in. Technically speaking, most peoples houses are owned by their bank. So we are talking about the illusion or prospect of true ownership at best.

How much property does the average evicted family own now? Also you forgot to take the different building standards into consideration: What you call a typical American house might not even pass as a woodshed over here.

What makes you think that the standard of living is so high in the US? People are employed but get paid peanuts and have no health insurance. Have you ever travelled to the civilized world (i.e. Europe)? The unemployed over here have a higher standard of living than the average US worker. Also there are other factors that make life worth living: Free press, culture, a healthy people and environment, good education for all etc. The US is behind even third world countries in some of these regards.

Your arguments would be relevant if media choices were still constrained by the limits of terrestrial broadcast. On the other hand, the modern day reality is internet, wireless, satellite and cable technologies are giving people access to more "channels" than they can possibly manage and absorb. I defy you to come up with a plausible scenario whereby "someone with vast amounts of resources" is going to monopolize literally thousands of commercial media channels.

Nowhere did I say that all opinions should be weighted equally. The point is what is produced in the marketplace of ideas should be allowed to stand or fall on its own merit, without interference from the government. We already have laws on the books to cover libel and slander, as well as predatory and monopolistic behavior. To put it another way, if Amy Goodman was on 50kW flamethrowers instead of Hannity then whack-jobs like McChesney (and their nutty followers) would think everything is fine.

This does not preclude someone with vast amounts of resources from monopolizing the media or influence people in a way that does not benefit society. Any person (Amy Goodman included) has a responsibility of their content and the government should care how these "public" air waves are used. Sophists in Greece should stand as a warning that because someone knows how to appeal to the "market place" of ideas, does not mean they are not dangerous to a democracy(i.e.Adolf Hitler).

This man speaks about balance. Why don't the news outlets hire commentators who are not puppets of the administration complete with golden seal of approval? Let us know that maybe there's another viewpoint. Not hearing it is dangerous. I know it's unlikely, but not getting a strong dissenting opinion could result in going to war, complete with Commanders in Chief standing before a banner reading "Mission Accomplished," when five years later, it still is not.

Organizations like Working Assets, tobacco companies and big corporations all donate to the ACLU, which in turn uses that money to buy the favors of those who serve in Congress -- who vote to unconstitutionally fund the activities of the ACLU under the Civil Rights Attorney's Fees Awards Act of 1976.
