regardless of what the lyrics or lyric sheet say, he clearly says "skull"...i always understood it as "soul" but if you think about it, it makes more sense and rhymes with "dull perfectly.

Sounds like the song belongs in a zombie movie that way, not really the symbolic romantic thing, like having your soul cut into. So you can't exactly say, "Regardless of the lyrics" for this one. I think Bruce wanted it that way, hence his own lyrics. And it was always clear to me that he sang "soul" to begin with, even after 20 years.

although skull is 'less' poetic that's not the point. Bruce is the boss and very male oriented in his music. Bruce speaks very closely to those that just break their backs and scrape to get by in life. For me personally this song hits right home but again to me skull is much more fitting. Its not supposed to be poetic. Its gritty and real, that line is meant to hurt and it does.
