As MSHA ultimately determined in its report regarding the Crandall Canyon Disaster, the mine actually was engaged in "retreat mining" at the time of the collapse. In fact, there had been extensive retreat mining in the area. Al Davis, the man standing next to Murray, was the MSHA District Manager at the time of the disaster. He knew that the operator was performing retreat mining, but he never said a word as Murray spread this misinformation. Shame on him.

It is my understanding that One of the deaths was an MSHA inspecter ... to make sure everything is safe as possible while the rescue workers was trying save those men it was an accident that everyman there including the inspecter knew all too well the dangers that were involved.

MSHA when ivestagating an accident sometime will ask the other miners questions too find out their credibility their experince and such, to make sure every miner is a certified miner because there are things you have to know before you step foot into a mine. I believe that that Robert Murray is angry because when he hears the reports then they are inacurate and the reporters are uneducated when it comes to mining and they don't fully understand the details so they fill in the blanks.

they might come back the next day and they will look at the same things they looked at the previous day and if a piece of equipment or problem is still there then they will write up a violation. if there is a death then we close the mine down and report that death MSHA will then come over to the mine and inspect it very closely and determing what the actual cause of death was and if there was anything illegel going on at the time of death.

if you look at the books and records for all the mines your going to find out that every mine indeed has violations if the inspector decides that there is too many violations then they can actually shut the mine down until all or most of the violations have been fixed.. sometimes they will point something out and tell you something is illegel and needs to be fixed right now or as soon as possible( for example a light on a piece of equipment needs to be replaced).

when i was being trained to work about 10 years ago one thing they tell you in training is if there ever is an accident of any kind you first make sure that the conditions ARE SAFE before going in for rescue you check the roof, ribs, and eqipment involving the accident so that there won't be another one...

While coal mining is a dirty, dark and hard occupation, it provides a welcome alternative - American - energy source.
