The first person I ever saw play the berimbau was Airto. He and Flora were playing a concert in New York in 1984, I think. He opened the concert. He walked out on stage, carrying a berimbau and a bag full of other percussion instruments. He started to play and sing, and the whole crowd was spellbound. It was amazing how much sound he got out of a simple looking instrument. Just marvelous.
