I am applying for a permit to transport my python to school programs and have found the process to be 100 times more difficult and time consuming then it is to get a permit for my concealed weapon, and a permit for a suppressor for my gun.
@roonuv Thanks for your comment. Nobody in the reptile community is saying that the pythons in the Everglades are not a problem. In fact, they are the ones on the ground there in Florida spending their own money to have the right to enter the Everglades and remove them. We want the Everglades Pythons gone! What we are upset about is ban at the federal level on interstate sales & transportation. Why should small business & pet owners throughout the country pay for the problem in Florida?
What has/will the reptile community do about the decline of other animals attributed to the pythons? You cannot dispute the fact that these pythons do cause havoc. I'm with the government on this one. Sorry.

I present over 500 live reptile programs to schools and other organizations in the state of Oregon and Washington every year since 1991. It took me 22 years of hard work to get to this point and they just destroy it with a flick of a pen. I have a home, wife and three children who depend on me.
a whole 9 species of snakes banned??? let me say something. lets say a little boy has a pet snake and his family has to move. he's be heartbroken that he'd never see his pet again!
The HSUS CEO has been quoted saying that he is not an animals lover, that he dosesn't believe in pets, and that the HSUS will not try to prevent the extinction of any pet animal because it is something that humans bred, not nature. They are trying to make all pets illegal, not just reptiles. This is just the start, they will be going after the bird and fish people next, then it will be out cats and dogs. Everyone should be doing something about this, it is about us loosing out rights.
this makes me so mad i love big snakes and i just got my first after working with them a lot for a long time now if i move i cant bring my pet this is really sad
You people aren't getting it. It is ONLY 9 right now. It WILL get larger. They will expand this ban to attack dozens, if not hundreds of animal species. This is literally a test run to see how easy it is to get away with this, and depending on the ease, (which is great at the moment) they will simply add animals to the list. The ball python is in the top 20, I promise you. From there, it will go to all constrictors. The mentality of "It doesn't affect me" is foolhardy.
I talked earlier in the month to a field biologist surveying a small colony of feral Nile monitors in S. Florida and he has been down there for months and has never seen a Burmese python. While I am sure some are there, I don't think it's the threat it has been hyped up to be!
I think this ban is a good thing. Not from the aspect of a non legit study, but so it weeds out most of the people who don't provide the right care for these big snakes. I feel bad for them. I'm sure the animal that little billy gets will soon loose it's luster in most cases. There are plenty of snake species that don't get so big. One way or another, seems like lots are there and are competing for the same food source as our local snakes. Same goes for our bigger wildlife.
@boching It's not like the old days anymore.... 99% percent of the time Little Billy isn't getting a Burmese Python anymore. He is getting the Ball Python or Corn Snake. They are much cheaper. When you are young cheaper = better for many kids. Most the people getting these are experienced owners... Or at least over the age of 18 or have Parental consent.
@keithdude6488 I think people are buying smaller snakes lately but think it's just cause the bigger ones are not around too much any more. They were not that expensive anyways. At least the more popular ones like Burmese python or a Reticulated. Their are still snakes available that get big. Unfortunately, most parents and adults don't take proper care. I think you should have to have a class license to have most reptiles and birds that get big or require lots of care. It's a shame.
@boching I guarantee you the bigger ones are still around and thriving in collections. Thing is 99% of breeders won't be selling large constrictors to small children anymore. You can't ban stupid. I think people need to take responsibility. We don't need big brother stepping in on every issue.
@keithdude6488 I just think that there should be restrictions on who can buy exotic critters. This will weed out the people who will loose their interest after a month. So people who are responsible collectors can still enjoy them. I don't think most breeders are the problem. Mostly irresponsible pet stores. I'm not for big brother restricting everything either.
@boching Hasn't history shown that the only people hurt by those restrictions are the proper keepers? If the idiots want to get it they will. If they are stupid enough to get an animal they can't care for they will be stupid enough to get it illegally. Ex. Idiots who killed their child in Florida, All the illegally held hots, it doesn't end.
@keithdude6488 Yeah but I think it's the better option for the innocent ones here. Unfortunately it would hurt the breeders but, if we really love there amazing animals it's the best for them. It will definitely weed out most "impulse buyers", and will educate the ones who don't know how to care for them properly. Not just snakes, the other animals like Iguanas and monitors. Their will always be idiots. Nothing we can do about that, but i think it would be best for the animals.
@boching and if this is where it is going to stop, then we would probably just be disappointed and work with it. But we truely believe that this is not going to stop, already there is a proposal going back to the whitehouse/congress to ban all boas, (including the small ones) and all pythons (including balls and childrens). Hell, I have seen some proposals that include all snakes, including gaters and corns. This isn't about which animals we can keep. It is about loosing our rights.
@MrsWalkers1994 I don't think this has to do with taking our rights away. Yeah sure on some level they maybe do, but with snakes? I feel it's more for the animals sake. Regulations are good to some effect. What about the animals that are still being wild caught? If it is left unregulated, then what will the future bring for our kids? Will they be able to see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat? It does not look good to me. We can put our rights up our ass once it's all gone.
Ever been eaten alive by a fifteen foot long snake? I GUESS NOT.
