  • AWESOME! :)

  • I have to say this is the most beautiful, graceful dance I have ever seen.

    Wow!

  • Any details on what the belt is made of? Is the skirt one sari that has simply been folded in an Indian way like an Orissi costume? If so how did you learn? Were you self taught or took classes? Books or articles you recommend? Thanks for responding....

  • This is the best belly dancing costume I have ever seen! I also like to make my own costumes and jewelry. I have a few questions for you although I will not be duplicating anything of Mata Hari's, I would like to learn a little...Is the jewelry Indian that you then altered, period stampings and replicas, or middle eastern elements creatively put together, or some of all 3?

  • @ssopasa Thanks! I made the costume attempting to replicate the look of her actual costumes with elements that I could find and piece together; most of the jewellery is filigree metal pieces, rhinestones, and found jewellery pieces that I assembled using photos of Mata Hari for reference. The bra and belt are fabric with the above elements stitched down.

The skirt is one sari that has simply been folded and stitched; I just made it up with my best judgment, no special training.

  • How did you make the headpiece? I love it so much! Love your costume to!

  • FABULOUS job on the costume and the dance!! love all the detail work you did on it. just amazing!

  • WOWWWWWWWWWWWW I love dance and costume! Everything Great!

  • I think this was very nicel done :) Bravo

  • Very very very VERY nice!

  • Gorgeous costume (very accurate reproduction!) and gorgeous hair!!!!

Have you any detailed photos of your costume? It is to die over!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Congratulations, the whole performance is very successful. At the turn of the century you'd have been the toast of Paris - and possibly the spokeswoman for a patented hair tonic. Costuming note: I've seen Southeast Asian costumes where gilded stiff leather was used to imitate metal filigree.

  • beautiful

  • This is so gorgeous!!! The costumes are fabulous and look just like the pictures I've seen of Marta Hari. Your makeup and dance moves are exotic and beautiful and so is the music. I love this!!!!!!!!!!!

  • looks like arm dancing to me lol cute still though and like the costume!

  • Why is this a mata hari dance?? the only things that made mata hari dancing so special and famous was that she striped while belly dancing and that she was naked in the end... and this was truely not that intense and erotic like mata hari wanted the dance to be... sorry...

  • @SirTannerham If you read the description, I am a costumer and was mostly interested in replicating her costume, and since I also bellydance I brought the two interests together. I am not trying to replicate her exact dancing because nobody knows exactly how she danced, and because I am not interested in stripping. If that's what you're looking for I'm sure there's other videos out there for you. :P

  • u looks scary! just like mata hari

  • I love the costume. I plan to do a Mata Hari costume someday. My only concern would be dancing in that skirt, especially if you were using it on a faster song. It seems like it would be pretty easy to step on.

  • Great music. Love the costume. Very concentrated SouthEast Asian Influences on the outfit. :)

Mata Hari.

  • love the costume!! please a really loved that song can you tell my the name?

  • @NuhadRS It's "Dunya" by Niyaz. Many Youtube videos have a little music-note symbol under the video that shows the song name. :)

  • @Sarcasmhime jeje yes i just saw that, thank's anyway for answer!! :)

  • were did you got the head dress? the whole outfit is so better than regular belly dance costomes.

  • @936justme

I made the headdress and costume myself.

  • your costume is beautiful :) do you have any advice on how I could make something like that? a link or a step by step guide? thank you :)

  • Unique!

  • wonderful!!!!!congratulations for this beautiful moment!!!!!!!!!!

  • oh wow what a lovely recreation of the costume!! That one was always my favourite costume of hers. And the hair!I would be jealous if I didnt know how much hair as long as that gets in the way ;) Really, great job on everything in this piece, music, choreo, costume, expression.

  • HOw did you make the top and the belt its so pretty.

  • Great job in bringing her to life, what fun to see "Mata Hari" move instead of just the still photos. What did you use for the top? Maybe you can tackle La Belle Otero next!

  • Glorious! The dance and costume, that is. I am quite the devotee of the historical Mata Hari and am most impressed.

  • i love your costumee =D

  • OMG! You look like you walked out of a John Frederick Lewis painting! Stunning O_O

    5 atars

  • How did you make the costume?

  • hotty and sweety.

  • sweety dancing.

  • this is so sweety and sexy.

  • your costume is AMAZING

  • I thoughly enjoyed this! Your are georgeous and very talented! Your movements are enchanting and mesmerizing! Great job!!

  • great costume!

  • Maral, I was so hoping to see you dance in this costume and here it is. You're totally beautiful! ~zina

  • You did a FABULOUS job, Maral. Some people just don't seem to get that a lot of what you had to work with, was a whole lot of nothing. You did awesome for what little historical "representation" and true records of visuals, to help you along.

  • i love this dancing

  • This is the second time I have watched this video...the costume, the movements, the timing of the dance, the make-up etc. very much describe and depict the historical researches of Mata Hari!...Very, very good!!!...Excellent work..thank you.

  • your costume is so beautiful! must have taken a long time to make! How did you make your top?

  • WOW...i love it.

    So enchanting~!

the costume, the makeup, the dance...everything!

  • I can tell that you really did your research!...especially in relation to your costume, your makeup, and your dance poses...very good!

  • While the costume is lovely, this is a mere recreation of still photographs, posed portraits, and not of her movement. Watch Nejla Yatkin's version, she demonstrates the movement better.

  • While Nejla's videos are beautiful and evocative, I disagree that she is any more 'authentic'. There is no footage of Mata Hari's dancing, and by contemporary accounts she was not a trained dancer (in fact some accounts by other dancers claimed she was a rather poor dancer who got by mostly on her exoticism). I simply chose to interpret her using my own modern bellydance training. I do not see that as a less valid choice.

  • Beautiful dancing and exquisite costume! What struck me the most is how long your hair is! It gave it even more of an exotic look. Kudos to you for taking such good care of it! My hair was pretty long at one point and it drove me nuts because I was constantly sitting on it or something to get it caught. The headpiece reminded me a little of the Valkyrie/Vikings because it curled upward. Beautiful overall!

  • You're dance is wonderful! I love your costume. Where did you get the headdress?

  • Thanks! I made everything on the costume myself except for the Indian sari used as a skirt.

For the headdress I hand-formed brass wire to create the frame and then attached various brass filigree pieces, beads and crystals.

  • @Sarcasmhime you are very clever. I wish i was so talented. I love your costume and your interpretation. From what i undertand Mata Hari was not a trained dancer and as you said got by on her exotic looks. I think you did a wonderful job!

Is there a site on the net where i could learn to make a bra top and head piece like you have done?

  • you are beautiful

  • She is a master. I would love to see her perform live.

  • wow! the music is beautiful and the costume is amazing!!!!!!!!! You look deep and mysterious - like a harem girl dancing for a sultan or something. Lovely.

  • Wow... Dancing - beautiful, costume - beautiful, hair - divine (is it all yours?). I'm only a beginning bellydancer myself, but I think you did a marvellous job! You're absolutly gorgeous and I could definitely stand to take a tip or two from you!

  • Mata Hari wasnt a good dancer, the great dancers of her time despised her, Diaguilev even refused to meet her

  • Yes, I did a lot of research on her to make this costume. She was neither a dancer nor a spy, just very naive, egotistical and ultimately misunderstood. However nowadays it wouldn't be a good performance to 'dance' like she did! ;)

  • but seems she was very good as a courtisan

  • you really look like mata hari, good work!!

    your moves are beautiful

  • oh my God who fine hair

  • You did a very nice job on the replica costume. there's one online everywhere, i wont mention where, that's terribly over done! I wish i could see it in real life. And great hair too!

  • Wonderful

  • costume is fine, dance is charming:)

only a small notice:maybe shoulders should be a bit more back and down, hip tucked under.

  • Yep, Mata Hari was tribal all along!!!

Always knew it. Incredible replica of her costume. Cool dance too! Well enjoyed!
