Daley states that Epstein discovered the Beatles, when actually, their first manager, Allen Williams, booked them in the Indra Club in Hamburg, Germany, where they signed a contract with Bert Kaempfert, who produced their first recording, My Bonnie, which reached #32. They then signed on with Epstein as their new manager, who got George Martin to produce them after Kaempfert released them from their contract with him. So Epstein was just one of many who discovered the Beatles.
What year was this ? How the hell could anyone in showbusiness not know who Brian Epstein was in the mid 60s ? The manager of the most famous group in the world ? I ask you !!
Who would guess that Brian was having serious problems with drugs and homosexuality from his very professional and classy appearance here??? You just never know...
OK, I adore John Daly. ADORE him. But this has got to be my least favorite clip of his. First, he gets the guest's NAME WRONG!!! Then, he yammers on and on and doesn't let Barry...er, I mean Brian, tell his own story about discovering the Beatles. Poor Brian could barely get a word in edgewise! I would have loved to hear him tell the tale, he was so charming with such a lovely accent. Shame he died so young.
Brian Epstein ( the creator of the Beatle Mersey Sound) while he books them in Germany, France, & other European Countries. In U.S.A., George Martin took charge after Brian's death as a Roadie Manager.
whatever Brian was or wasn't is irrelevant in his personal life. He was a great manager and helped many young musicians like THe Beatles get organized and rise to fame to create great music and conquer the world
Oh! Look! In this episode of "What's My Line?" to be special guest is Brian Epstain, the manager of the Beatles.
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! THERE'S THE DIVINE PAUL ANKA, TOO!!!!!! Paul met the fab Beatles and all together they made a picture! I love you all, my beloved idols!
He had to sign in as "Mr. X" because by this time (Summer of 1964) his name had been mentioned often in the U.S. press, although since he wasn't a member of the group, his face wasn't well known.
3:11 "Are there any moments, Mr. Epstein, when you feel a little sorry about the whole thing?" Unless you lived during the time (I did) you simply can't imagine how much animosity most people over 30 felt towards the Beatles. Musically and stylistically, they represented such a massive paradigm shift that anyone already conditioned by society couldn't get it. When they appeared on Ed Sullivan, my parents kept saying, "They have to be kidding!" and "It's just a fad. It won't last."
@racookster Yes, I do remember the negative reaction from the elders! I do remember the Beatles being rediculed and presented to us youngsters as hooligans. It was the hair..... the epitome of insubordination.
@racookster You're overstating a bit one one point:
that Arthur Fieldler (Boston Pops) and Leonard Bernstein came out in support of The Beatles did much to molify the older generation/s. And that The Beatles did songs such as "A Taste of Honey" and "Till There was You" persuaded many who "hated" rock 'n roll to give them a chance.
A DJ on a major radio station began playing "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in 12/1963; at one point he said, "I don't think they're going anywhere." WRONG!
Several books have indicated that had Mr. Epstein lived longer, the Beatles would not have broken up when they did. He had a talent for arbitrating the differences among the group members. Fascinating man and, of course, died much too soon.
emh26 has a very good point. Superstar status is not the same today as it once was. The mystery guests on this show are and were utter giants, really inaccessible to the ordinary person, and the magic of the show was based on that very inaccessibility!
When the question is asked whether Brian ever booked Paul Anka's tour, Paul raises his arms to the heavens, as if gesturing "From your lips to God's ears." Cute.
What an interesting show. I don't know that it would work today, cos celebritites are all over the place, even managers and anybody to do with anybody famous. I'd never heard of this before. Thanks for the post.
@eheaven3 Wasn't genius. Brian had been turned down by every other label in England. George Martin ran a small label (Parlophone) and was known at the time for making comedy/novelty records, but not pop or rock and roll. A music publisher suggested to Brian that he ask Martin to listen to the group's demo recording. The rest, as they say, is history.
@observer9670 Brian Epstein had visited Capitol Records in the US, in effort to persuade them to release Beatles' records in the US. He told them he was going to turn the process around -- for decades US records dominated foreign charts. They thought he was crazy and turned him downn.
I think I can detect a slight hint of a "pseudo-American" accent in the way he says No before they find out that he's British...he surely tried it since he took acting lessons. Even the "Mary had a litle lamb" part doesn't sound British at all...I wish the host would have let Brian introduce himself in the end. I love Brians voice :3
at 3min it sounds like paul anka says Robber, when the others say creator , discoverer of the beatles. interesting, can anyone please decipher what he says and put me right on this?
i think Anka does say robber (twice, in fact) but he was severely impacted by the "bristish invasion" and in a very odd litigation with RCA at the time. He was kinda famous for his temper and loose lips.
He says 'barber'. This is in connection with the well-timed image Epstein crafted for Beatles with the haircuts and so forth. Which as you know became a popular fashion as much as the music itself at the time.
oh yeah i can hear that now, thx ! i thought he might have been refering to the tension and suspicion that often exists between musicians and management.
When did this episode air, because I understand that in the last few years of the show's run, they did their broadcast from the Ed Sullivan Theatre, where of course the Beatles' historic first television appearance in America took place in 1964.
The "guy on the right" is my adorable Bennett Cerf! As for the "Epstein" pronounciation, that went on for 20 years. I was little Beatle nut in '64, read all teen mags, didn't know who Brian was either then. What's funny is that the audience, probably middle age or a bit younger, didn't scream or get excited, were more excited about Bennett's passport than the Beatles, who they thought were stupid, like my parents. Poor Dorothy didn't have much longer to live, face swollen..alcohol.
Considering he was so famous, it must have annoyed Brian no end how often people would get his name wrong...aside from Mr Daly's obvious 'Barry' Epstein gaffe, the panallist on the far right addressed him as 'Mr EpSTEEN' in the American fashion, even after Mr Daly had correctly pronounced his name 'EpSTINE' (correct in England anyway).
Kilgallen was all over the Beatles story in her columns in 1964, She was very close to pop music, and even reportedly had an affair with Johnny Ray in the 1950's. But she probably never actually met Epstein prior to this, although she certainly knew his name.
Poor Brian. Very well I know how it is like .. when somebody is mispronouncing your name. it is irritating! Barry... ehhh (sorry for possible mistakes)
Brian Epstein was the "fifth Beatle" as told by Paul McCartney. Fascinating man! He died way too young! Soft spoken, articulate and genuinely a very nice man. He was gay at a time in Britain where it was against the law. He died on August 29th, 1967 of what has been said of a drug overdose.
He died on August 27 1967, of a very slight accidental Carbitral (bromide sleeping pill) overdose ~ according to the official coroner's report. Carbitral was at that time believed to be a VERY SAFE medication for his chronic insomnia. Thanks for your kind words, Cidigirl!
Considering the way the Beatles were going and eventually went, I don't think they would have listened to him much longer anyway even if he had not met an untimely death. They didn't listen to anyone in the later years and it cost them a lot of money. Anyone remember the con men who took the Apple corporation for bundles of cash with hairbrained ideas?
Some insiders said, they suspect John Lennon as Bi-Sexual (Read The Book of Horst Fascher-The man who brought the beatles. In this book the autor tells his observations about John having Sex with Trannies) and so, this could be one reason why Mr. Epstein had such a faible for the Beatles...
@OropherThranduil Well i don´t know anything about this vacation. All i´m talking about are facts of a book, where the autor is one of the first busines-friends of the beatles, in the time he was leading the "Star Club" in Hamburg. He tells about all details and all experiments they did that days. And his "caught in the act" of John and a tranny is not a guessing, its a fact.
actually nobody knows what exactly happened bteween john and brian.
because there are only 2 people who knew it first-hand, and i don't even think brian told it to his poersonal assistant, and john never really said it either.
@Cidigirl John took it hard about Brian Epstein & John & the other Beatles decided to take a holiday to go to India & learn Enlightenment while George got into Hari Krishna consciousness movement.
Bennett underestimated the beatles. I think many older people at the time didn't quite get them. Dorothy was complimentary and kind in her remarks though--and genuine.
02:49-02:53 ...And Brian corrects him very subtly, embarrassed, and at the same not wanting to draw attention. Even so, the look he gives Mr. Daly for mispronouncing his name is eloquent enough :-)
Just heard it now...what an embarrassing situation for both, since the host gets his name right in the end he probably noticed his mistake at some point...idiot :( poor Brian, it's like calling John Lennon Jimmy Lemon or so.
JImmy Lennon was the Uncle of the Lennon Sisters of Lawrence Welk fame - Jimmy sang as a night club & big band singer & announced Boxing from the Olympic Arena wearing a Tuxedo and announced each boxer..IN THIS CORNER WEIGHING !#& POUNDS - etc- Mr Daly refers to Brian as "BERRY?" ...totally mispronouncing the name - did you see the look Brian gives him @ 2:51 ...honestly these "adults probably had never listened to a complete song of the Fab Four - when this was recorded-
Summer 1965 -- music night. Manager of the Beatles, then mystery guest Liza Minnelli and guest panelist Paul Anka all in their early luscious periods.
Fascinating to watch Dorothy Kilgallen at the height of her ( 1:29 ) bad cop routine. As a Broadway news reporter, she knew a lot about all kinds of music: notice that she was more up-to-date / sympathetic with mid 60s British rock n' roll than Cerf seems to be ( 3:13 )
Daley states that Epstein discovered the Beatles, when actually, their first manager, Allen Williams, booked them in the Indra Club in Hamburg, Germany, where they signed a contract with Bert Kaempfert, who produced their first recording, My Bonnie, which reached #32. They then signed on with Epstein as their new manager, who got George Martin to produce them after Kaempfert released them from their contract with him.

To have the Beatles themselves on the show would have been great, but who knows what they would have said, especially John.

It would have been great if they had actually had the Beatles themselves on WML! The thought must have crossed someone's mind at some point.
