what is the black square hiding? Why is it there? And how come nobody from the news or public seems to even notice a big black square on the screen?

it does smoke all the time but i've never seen that little light that looked like fire

Just googled it and found this:

"The flames you can see by the tail is the exhaust from the orbiter's APU and is normal."
