I looked carefully and I can see the statue; seen through the box it is displaced slightly to the left (screen left) relative to its actual position when the box is lifted. This is a very poor performance, too. The effect is much, much better than it looks here. Many different small objects can be made to appear in this method.

The statue is faintly visible after the background is replaced for the last time, and the reverse side of the background iplate s never seen.
