Louis had resumed performing on a restricted basis the previous summer at the Newport Jazz Festival. His doctor forbade him from playing his trumpet. In spite of this he started playing the trumpet again and touring. His appearance here on the Johnny Cash show in 1970 is evidence of this. Louis remains seated no doubt because of his frail health. He continued to tour and his health continued to deteriorate in the coming months. He died the next summer in July of 1971.
