Thanks for the response. The entertainment industry still plays an important role, they have the power to, as well as entertain us, influence the masses. Brad and Angelina making adoption a more socially accepted concept is an example, as well as events like comic relief. I think a lot in the entertainment industry see the fame they have as a responsibility. But then again, I am an optimist, there are a lot of negative roll models as well.
Thanks again for taking part in the discussion. :)
I do in fact agree with your points and really have nothing to add that you didn't already cover. Only one more thing... your eyes from 1:00 - 1:05 look super scary! Sorry, other than that you look lovely as ever :)
All the others are just making deals to get fat and trying to live.
From that point of view I guess you could say that these are also unnecessary.
The world does not need Depp and Brangelina but without Playwrights, writers... etc. it would probably stagnate and eventually perish into a cold dark place... Not to take literally though but the result would definitely mechanic, don’t you think?
Hard working doctors probably don't even watch that much entertainment, they only have limited time, which they use for sleep and more important things than to go to the movies.
Same could be said about scientists.
But honestly most of them are not making the world better, there are only a small percentage of people (like in every expertise and area) who believe in their work/ craft and acknowledge the responsibility that they have taken on.
Of course entertainment is valuable. While a lot of jobs like physicians and engineers etc. focus on making life possible, the arts are what make life bearable. Quality of life is as important as sustaining it.
yes! this video is exactly what i think about having children, this whole video was very well put :) and i often think that the best kind of way of taking action to change the world is when ordinary people just do little good things over a sustained period of time, like regularly volunteering with a big charity - although celebs putting on one-off benefits and stuff is great, i think its much more impressive when a person just dedicates a bit of their time each week to a cause.
@yearofbeingbrilliant That's it exactly, celebs are comfortable enough to do one off events. That said lots and lots of very wealthy celebrities do give generously on a large scale, but it's not publicized a lot. I admire those people that really dedicate in any way they can!
That makes me happy you are willing to adopt as there are so many children that feel unwanted and need a loving mother and plus you get to skip the whole giving birth pain and the 'ups and downs' of your hormones from pregnancy :)
Interesting topic. While I agree with most of the points you make, I do strongly believe that actors and the film industry can be a gateway to the mass population becoming aware of world wide issues. Yes it is a shame that this is a necesity for engagement and it is also sad that for many of the films, the issues are the backplot with the main focus being on a relaitionship or some other tantalizing topic!
I guess another problem would be actors and films can limit the effect incidents have on something. If someone goes to the cinema to watch a heartwrenching film about Rowanda for example, they may go in, aware that they are watching a film (and with such, there are often preconceptions of detachment and fantasy), pay attention to the issues for that hour and a half then leave again and return to mainstream society where the focus is on....as you say...who won the X Factor!
@WaistcoatDave That's it, theatre and film is at it's core just story-telling - whilst most plays and films hammer a message, some are more successful than others at leaving a mark on people. The world of celebrity however, is completely useless to everyone and has no purpose other than to make money!
@straightfromschool I'm a Student Social Worker as well as a film lover and I am a big believer that to tackle big social issues, both nationally and worldwide, we first need to bring attention. Due to the fact that the majority of people fall in love with the celebrity culture, as annoying as it is, we can use it....celebrity endorsments do help.....celebrity presented tv shows and films (I mean Al Gore did preety well in an Incovieniant Truth (Ohhh Spelling!)
As long as the message being put through is one that is valid and thought through rather then just being "the usual" entertaiment, then it can really serve a helpfull purpose! Tis just annoying that the society we live in and the importances that it holds mean that this is a necesity almost to get recognised, at least in the mainstream! (Sorry if I'm babbiling and for the spelling mistakes, no sleep in a longggg time)
I know this isn't on the acting topic and you don't have to answer if it's too personal but I was wondering if you could expand on your not wanting to have children? As a woman I can't imagine not feeling the desire to mother, although I hate how anti feminist that makes me sound :P
@TheFelicityCullen Haha! It's not anti-feminist at all, it's just personally I don't like the idea of having children. Pregnancy sounds horrendous, as does giving birth...and I'm not that good with kids anyway. Just me though, I know that lots of people know they want kids one day! :)
interesting stuff as always Olivia :) the world is a pretty apathetic place when you think about it. Lot of us prefer to live in ignorance of our own or each others problems. Dunno exactly how I stand on 7 billion or what my thoughts on it are, though a lot of the points you raised were excellent. The resources thing is my biggest worry I think
you don't want children?? this revelation has ruined my plans for you.
also fuck the scientists!! when did they last help anyone??! i don't care about black holes or what is at the bottom of the ocean. the only bottom i care about is yours!!
anyway although i disagree with everything you said, great video

Some call it entertainment others are able to see bits of truth in “it”.
Just a matter of perspective and how one perceives the world... I guess.
