I'll bet if someone had strapped a concussion bomb to Fred Travalena's chest and gave him 24 hours to track down a better copy of this, he would've managed to do it! - 1b2s
(But he died the same day as Michael Jackson in 2009, so I guess we'll never know!)
Jermaine and Devo just locked it down. They knew so exactly what they were doing with this. The thing is just dripping with vibe. Jermaine on vocals workin it into some serious "down" Devo music. The presentation is so far out you got to just shout.
Devo didn't produce Debbie Harry's "Kookoo", but they did perform on it. "Kookoo" was produced by Nile & Bernard from Chic in 1981. It's a great LP! I was surprised to learn about this Jermaine/Devo track!
ETI on BoingBoing net said: "Jermaine called up Devo and introduced himself, and they hung up on him figuring it was a joke. Then he called back and explained he was for real and wanted them to add a little of the Devo magic to his album. Mark and Jerry sang backup.
I remember hearing this for the first time on the Electrifying Mojo's radio show on WGPR in Detroit. Mojo was all about unity of the black folks and the white folks through music."
Im pretty sure they produced and played (perhaps all the music besides Jermaines parts and vocals) on these songs and maybe even the entire album. They also produced a Debbie Harry album right around the same time called Koo-Koo .
This track is just as fresh as the day it was baked. Devo should be producing hip-hop and R&B now. The result should at least be as good as T-Pain. Love it!
I remember that this was recorded in the covered wagon theater at Knott's Berry Farm.
It was a Halloween special, and (all of the members of) Devo also performed Peek-a-Boo, and possibly That's Good.
I've got the vinyl EP of this song: Devo actually performed on the record.
I half-remember that Devo also performed a second song with Jermaine. I don't think they were miming their own music, and were REALLY goofing around in the background.

Jermaines songs are boring I have tried to like them but I cant.. If you play his songs today they sound outdated. MJs songs dont they always sound fresh timeless sorry..
@Diamonds7771 Why are you talking about Michael? This isn't Michael's song. If you TRIED to like ANY of Jermaine's songs, and it ALWAYS failed, why were you watching THIS one. That makes no apparent sense.
@lilbush98 That's the problem with MJ fans. they are shocked when a fan of Jermaine Jackson notes their preference for Jermaine over Michael! What they fail to realize is the fact that to Jermaine Jackson fans, his tunes are catchy! Diamond7771 hasn't realized that some folks like a full mature voice. Diamond couldn't fathom our anger at the loss of Soul Music and true Electronic Sound as a genre. She thinks the world is all about Dancing!
@Diamonds7771 Why compare, they may be brothers but two different types of artists with different sounds. Jermaine actually is quiet talented in his own right. One should not down play, you may not find his sounds as catchy as Michaels' but their voices are so very very different. I love them all. Each of them are talented in their own right.
Ok This is Jermaine's song right? Then WHY the HELL are you dumb ass people talking about Michael? Leave Michael alone dammit. Last time I checked, this was Jermaine's song, not Michael's. I love the Jackson fam and all, but give Jermaine that respect. Goddamn, let Michael rest himself in loving peace.
I agree, I so wish all these people would stop comparing and trying to create division. It's not right. Jermaine NEVER tried to be MJ, he was and is an artist in his own right! They are different and Jermaine never tried to copy Michael, his music was always unique and his sound was Jermaine's sound. Michael's style and sound was his own. Jermaine will never replace Michael, you don't have to accept him. But he has his own fan base.
Exactly, they both started off at the same place, in 1969. This IS Jermaine's song, not Michael's. Jermaine probably doesn't give a damn what you people are saying because he knows the truth. Both of them are very unique in their own wonderful way.
@HaliB75 They make it seem like Janet is the only one who loved michael....people these days are crazy!!! the whole family loved each other and not only michael and janet the only one talented. I love jermaine's voice not so much of MJ's because of his style of music. People need to get a life.....I love michael once again but he's not the only talented person in the world
@lilbush98 I know thats right, I love the whole jackson family but alot of fans make it seem like Michael is the only one to come out with good songs.....um hello not!

Fabulous collaboration; the groove is smooth. Brilliant idea - they got together and it was solid gold. Dress in tux and gown to this one, mon. The flow is right on it, from beginning to end... flawless. These guys crafted this so nicely.
I dont ever recall any stories about how Jermaine hooked up with Devo in the first place. I remember Devo were one of the acts who popularized music that became known as New Wave.
If Jermaine would have stopped making babies and focused on his career (he IS talented) he would have continued to have a sucessful career. But, he instead got lazy and started bugging Mike about $ and touring.

Jermaine Jackson and Devo?! I'm surprised the world didn't explode right after the performance. The dance is the 80's shuffle. It's basically the dance you did when you couldn't dance that good.
OK..I had no idea this was Jermaine and Devo...I used to really like this song back in the day...YOutube is sooooooooo what MTV wanted to be!! Thanks YOutube
That is Fred Travalena who introduces them. He is the greatest impersonator of all time. The Vegas mob offered him a fortune if he would sell his soul. He refused so the mob hired another guy to steal his act. Cheers to Fred for not giving in to the mob.
not that broke i think.. but he should of lasted way longe in music... he disaapeared in the mid 90's... as he type of music kinda died then in the mid 90's
Janet pays his child support for the youngest 2 because they still live at havenhurst. The babymamma for the youngest 2 took him to court and he didnt have to pay because they couldnt tell his income.
Hahaha how they chose to be called Spud and Pud DEVO!!! They didn't want their real names to rub off Jermaine's target market!! I'll mute the vocals and see how the whole song ends up, sounds like a good club mix
Wow!! I used to love this song. I actually have the 12 inch single.. I've never seen this performance before tonight! Thanks so much for posting this. You Tube rocks so much harder than MTV...

you just totally made me remember the 6th grade dance so much more with the drop down lasso, omg Im flashing right now!!!

The collaboration is incredible. It's smooth, it's funky - it's got verve. This was meant to be. The tune has an understated, silky groove.

OOh I loved this song when I was a kid. And the beat still affects me the same. It's still a snapy tune that's still danceable.

Jermaine Jackson and Devo?! I'm surprised the world didn't explode right after the performance. The dance is the 80's shuffle. It's basically the dance you did when you couldn't dance that good.

omg! this takes me waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back. lol it's a good house cleanin' tune.....lmao

I'll keep that in mind. Pink Floyd's Bike and Interstellar Overdrive certainly did that on a couple of occasions

That is Fred Travalena who introduces them. He is the greatest impersonator of all time. The Vegas mob offered him a fortune if he would sell his soul. He refused so the mob hired another guy to steal his act. Cheers to Fred for not giving in to the mob.
