what people dont get is the hawaiian island chain will not go BOOM and shed rocks into the ocean like that. hawaii is a hotspot in the oceanic crust, and the molten does not have to burn through the very viscous continental crust. and hawaiis volcano vents all the time leaving nothing to build up. plus where it does not have to burn through a continent it does not explode it is just very runny lava.

But currents, ocean topography, and the coastal geography all determine how a tsunami will manifest, so distance is not an exclusive factor. An event underwater could trigger a destructive wave as well as a land based event. Either the event or the wave could be more destructive depending on many factors.

Mauna Loa is on the east side of the Big Island, facing away from the rest of the Hawaiian islands to the west. The first part of the video shows that correctly. Right after the wave is created at 1:34, they flip Mauna Loa over to the west side, right where Kona actually is, to make it look like the wave would have a straight shot to Honolulu.
