"They always get the intellectuals first, the teachers" That was an interesting statement. The round-up of intellectuals has been done by communist/socialist/totalitarian regimes - never by the democratic or republic government, which you mistakenly allude to.
Funny you should equate intellectuals with teachers. They are not one in the same. I can only assume you arrogantly see yourself as an intellectual because you teach.
@PipeDownification As arrogant as you trying to pass yourself off as a college professor. It's pretty pathetic that you try to denigrate Vassar's Women's Studies by having people believe you're part of or have anything to do with it.
@sarahkellett Yeah, there's only so much room for stuff, but textbooks are becoming less and less relevant so it's not so much as of an issue as it's been in the past.
I took my mom to Braum's only because the restaurant we usually eat at was too crowded. The ice cream machine at Braum's is so loud and my 82 year old mom's voice is so low that conversation is a challenge. I thought about a movie, maybe Avatar, but I couldn't imagine explaining who the green people are to mom. But hey, Braum's worked and Ghirardelli chocolate.
High school nicknames rock...I still use mine and you know what that is...heheh The textbooks really suck...even in the music departments...I'm constantly correcting things or scratching out things that really do not promote good learning. It's hard to bite your tongue when it comes to the folks' friends...argh!!! You did better than I probably would have...hehhe
Oh, man- hey the textbook thing is not going to be so much a problem now that educators are getting hip to the incredible resources made available to them online.
@ItalianStallionette Hell ya, dude- a hippie socialist with hidden agendas, for sure. It's a scary thing to some that I'm actually teaching kids to question everything and search the answers for themselves, eh? Don't tell anyone... ;o)
When the generation before ours was young it used to be that the news was more responsible for telling things as they were... Slowly the news became less in touch with reality. If you had grown up watching realistic news reporting, you had learned to trust it. Where would you learn to think for yourself if you have always been spoonfed by the news?
@fehquig I'm gonna date myself but, hey, I was a big fan of Harry Reasoner and Walter Concrite. Remember when they had a few minutes of each news program called "commentary"...? It's sad how it's now nothing BUT commentary disguised as news.
I'm actually transitioning into making videos in a professional capacity- trying to get a sense of who the audience is when it comes to my colleagues on a global scale. It's been interesting!
It's always hard at stuff like that - I always feel that if I keep my mouth shut the person spouting their rubbish will take it as agreement. Fox news indeed. Poor foolish woman. good for you - I hope your tongue heals from you biting it!!!
@Ghostwriter6967 That's kind of what I was thinking at first, but she really did think I was the one who needed schooling about the big scary world of subversive education...oy.
@combustication07 Yes! On your birthday, take her out and thank her for giving you life.
I know that sounds corny but that's been a tradition with us and she really has come to appreciate it. She tells me about the story of my birth and how I was as a little baby.
I liked your description of Fox News as a Fear Box. I've seen them talk about textbooks before. They put forth lots of bogus general allegations about the textbooks but I've never seen them point to a single specific thing as actually being wrong or not factual.
@3CoolKats Teachers are the big enemy when it comes to Fox, because we teach something that is a big threat to them...always check your sources..be critical in your viewing habits and know the difference between opinion and fact.
Reason and logic...BIG enemies of Faux News, indeed.
