well, it depends on what to build, area of engineering and avalible resources. There  is no standard answer to that. Ideas will come all the time - engineering is always a full-time job, as even if you spend a few hours in the firma, your brain keeps working all the time on solutions. Sometimes ideas come while taking bath or so. It also depends if the first prototype works - or a lot of debug is required - especially in software and electronical engineering

Just think this way: moving money on wall street is seen as being more rewarding in real hard $ then working hard as an engineer - at least that is the perception. It is just wrong that making things which sell is seen as a worse job then moving money from A to B with no added value in the end but a good salary. How much marketing did Apple do for the iPhone and how well does it sell? How much did the key engineer in Apple get for this vs. the finance guy? What counts more for Apple?

I personally find the potential quite exciting, and I don't know why you'd study geology! :P
