  • the dubliners hands down, sinead does do the song justice tbh

  • Awesome.

  • Pairt II: Chorus Grainne Mhaol is coming over the sea, Armed warriors along with her as her guard, They are Irishmen, not foreigners nor Spanish... And they will rout the foreigners! Chorus May it please the God of Miracles that we may see, Although we only live a week after it, Grainne Mhaol and a thousand warriors... Dispersing the foreigners! Chorus

    Oh-ro You're welcome home...

  • Hi, I'm french. I love this song... But the lyrics...! XD It's hard to read some irish because the pronouciation have no relation with what you read ^^. But it is really a very beautiful song.

  • @beber: Yes the pronounciation does relate to what is written :-/

The sounds don't relate to the French/English way of writing, that's all.

  • Beber, The Blue skin north african....Beautiful

  • The letters are pronounced differently.. I have only just got to grips with it - after 8 years! Read the accents.. It's cool.

    Great language..

    Tony :-)

  • Wonderful song, wonderful landscapes, it seems like Uruguay, the country where I live... Thanks for upload this.

  • brillant video

  • I have to say that the version by Cruachan is a hell of alot more interesting.

  • love this song 4m the first day i heard it.have ta so tho the wolftones sing it betta..still love it tho

  • musica mais harmoniosa e muito boa

  • How's Sinead's accent? Is she a native or did she just memorize the words?

    (I know she's Irish)

  • She just memorized it.

  • Accent's not the best. She's from Dublin which was and is the most anglicised part of Ireland.

  • the galway accent is the best i think, sadly I dont got much a accent as I live in ulster I still got one like

  • Check out Darach Ó Catháin's version. 'Tis in the Connemara style.

  • uhm mate, everyone in Ireland speaks English (and have for centuries now), have no idea what you mean by ''anglicized''

  • There are online dictionaries that can help you out with that sort of thing.

  • You simply don't fetch. We speak English, have for ages, that's all there is to it. Some people have this curious idea that the more you speak Irish the more Irish you are. If so, then about half of Ireland isn't truly Irish as they can't hold a decent conversation.

  • I would maintain that an entirely English speaking area is more 'anglicised' than an Irish speaking one. Hence, Sinead hasn't a great ear for the lyrics of the song. I made no mention of relative values of Irishness.

  • Ok, I get what you mean. And I agree, her accent is a a bit shoddy, though not utter rubbish (although I don't speak irish very well either as I've lived half my life in Canada) cheers

  • jimmyandjody -I am wondering why are you saying her accent is shoddy, Sinead has a normal Irish accent, she comes from Dublin and has a Dublin accent and that is the way she speaks Irish. One doesn't have to have a Gaeltacht accent to be considered "correct" in Irish.

  • I'd have to disagree there. Her Irish pronunciation is very anglicised. This is not not meant as criticism of Sinead who sang it beautifully, but the fact remains that Dublin because of it's history is the most anglicised part of the Republic and this is reflected in the accent.

  • Jimmyandjody, would you not agree that Irish is a beautiful part of your culture and that it should be incouraged so that it won`t be lost forever?

  • Irish is lovely and should be encouraged, understand me. However, your level of Irish in no way determines how Irish you are; I'm from Cork, but as I lived some time in Canada I never really learned much Irish (did learn French though!).

  • Furthermore, I don't think of Ireland as ''anglicised''. We speak and have spoken English for centuries now, so if anything the revival of Irish in Ireland (because it was essentially dead)is Ireland being re-Irishcised. Like I mentionned, some have taken on strongly, but most barely scrape by in Irish.

  • plus, it's huge fun to jabber away in Irish in front of clueless tourists (well, I stutter more than anything, but I try)

  • True, I live in Dublin, just comming back from Inis Meain. What a pitty...Many Irish people lost their identity.

  • A beautiful song in all renditions I have heard and seen. I also saw The Wind that Shook the Barley! Erin go bragh!

  • im so glad i found this. im doing a research paper on grace o'malley =] thanks for posting

  • At 2.50 was represented IRA´s most mortal weapon. I hope, it will be Guinness, not M-16 or Uzi or something

  • the bass in it just ruins the song! fuckin disgraceful

  • I love this song! :) Who is the singer?

  • sinead o'connor

  • thx! :D

  • It's a revolutionary song about the pirate queen Gráinne Mhaol. You can find translated lyrics through google. Look 'em up.

  • Ok.

  • But look uo gráinne too learn a bit of history!

  • the wind that shakes the barley

  • She`s got a bit of an accent!! Ach tá sé físean hiontach!
