This was a good movie, but it can't hold a candle to the greatest western of all time, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES. Then comes the 2nd greatest of all time, HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER and then the 3rd of all time, THE GOOD-THE BAD- AND THE UGLY. I don't give a shit who says what, these are the facts.
well u sure killed the hell outa that fella today!!,,,lol,,classic man!!! classic!!!! seems like what a real veteran gunsiner woud tell ayoung wannabe who is full of shit, clint knows what they done's not right and that the kid is really remorseful but putting on like he likes his deed, clint kinda sarcasticly blows smoke up his ass by acting like hes pulling for the kids new murdering career,,lol,,great scene
I think the point of the movie is that, unlike what most westerns teach us, killing is not as fun as it looks, nor as easy on the people doing the shooting.
That is the best Western ever. Under the tree is legendary. No smart dialogue. Like being with your mean Irish Dad. People are going to learn from his experience, One he thought he'd finished with.
This depressing shit the best Western ever? Have you forgotten about High Noon, Shane, The Dollars Trilogy, Once Upon A Time In The West - all classics?
@83phatman They were Assassins, not bounty hunters. The difference is The Law places bountys and pays the bounty hunter who brings them in dead or alive.
A dark look on westerns. Portraying the horrors of murdering someone and proving that people cant be generalized by being eather good or bad, instead its in the decisions they make
My favorite is, unfortunately, the obvious one: "Its a helluva thing killin a man. You take away all he's got.... and all he's ever gonna have." Its so simple, yet such a profound explanation of the true weight of taking a life. When you take a minute to really think about that quote, it blows you away. Yours is great too though! I love the way he delivers that line.... "We all have it comin kid."
@contrabndsuprman That line "We all have it comin' kid" was simply the greatest line Eastwood has ever delivered. Clint knows how to dominate a scene and when to let someone else do it.
I have watched this scene 100's of times and I really don't know what to say at this point. It's so poweful, so full of pathos of our American idea of the hero. I can only say that Mr. Eastwood, truly, deserves the praise he gets.
Couldnt have said it better myself, man. Im glad to know there are still people out there who can read between the lines and appreciate the message of a film like this, and not just get a hard-on for the shooting and killing like so many assholes today. : )
Boy, Clint Eastwood is sure a storm of a man. I betcha he'll talk your head off if you let him. He doesn't say much here, but get him talkin' about his exclusive golf course that he owns in Carmel by the Sea, and he'll say some downright deep thoughts.
this line wreaks with dark religous undertones......i think this line was meant for everyone watchin' unforgiven rather than the poor kid suckin on the bottle of whiskey...its a truly great line, delivered with compassion (for the kid) and authority (for the rest of us)...!!!!
Kurr, your no different then myself or anybodyelse watching this video, well, except for the fact that your trying to convince everyone that youve killed, "Its a hell of a thing killin a man", and you dont Know jack shit about it, ya fuckin tool.
Whoa Whoa wait a minute , Clints No1 in my book when it comes to westerns but John Wayne is a very close second. If ya don't love the Duke then you haven't seen too many of his westerns. John Wayne has some of the all-time classic one liners too. Here's one for ya, some dude does something to the Duke and he says " Don't make a habit of doing that to many times And one more will be too many" Great John Wayne line. Watch his movies. Old but great. Love them both.
I honestly cannot stand john wayne in pretty much any movie. I used to love sands of iwo jima when I was a little kid...but now...bleh...The only movie I can stand now is the searchers. Which I must admit I do love that movie. Otherwise clint all the way.
watch...."john wayne and the cowboys"...."true grit"........."rooster cogburn" and maybe the "horse soldiers"...but, the movies i loved as a kid, are almost impossible to get into now.."escape from new york" "gilligan"...no wait, i still like escape from new york...and yes, that is not the Duke.,,,but just sayin and all
@baccaruda1970 NO! The point is those that are chastised as villains are usually the heroes. Munny does everything based on a relationship to another person. Lil Bill and Bob do everything for fame, money or power. Munny is a hero thats why this was an Oscar winner.
@cowboyjak224 Well, for an antagonist, Gene Hackman's character is just a sheriff trying to keep bad shit from happening in his town. Munny is a former mass murderer who rolls into town to collect a bounty. I think one of the best scenes in this movie is at the end where he's dying and he says, "I don't deserve to die like this! I was building a house!" and Clint just says " 'Deserve' has nothing to do with it."
@joesomenumbers Yeah I love how they switch the roles in this movie. Its obvious that these are both bad men but Lil Bill is definitely more on the side of law and order as he says he was trying to build 'a house' or a city with laws that were obeyed. He has principles like, he won't shoot an unarmed man where William Munney would. This movie is a great narrative about human morality.
If the movie's argument is beyond your intellectual capacity, don't blame it on Hollywood, let alone on Americans. Blame it on yourself for failing to get the whole point of the movie.
It is antithesis of the classic western. There are no white or black hats, instead only complex situations governed by complex dualities. No man is heroically good or heroically brave - all men ultimately wear a varying shade of gray.
Not sure where you're from champ but i think you live by proxy of our constitution. I think yours is probably a rental. You would run screaming to your mother if you had to experience five minutes of the serious circumstances which gave you the privilege to be an ignorant punk.
I usually dont curse but here it goes. This is the greatest FUCKING movie of all time. its interesting to watch this scene and no country for old man's coin toss scene with the old man at the gas station. thanks for posting the scene.
This is a truly great sequence. One of the things I always liked best is the way the kid answers "Yeah" when Munny/Eastwood asks "Dids you get him" You can make a great piece of acting with such small means. One can hear in his voice how scared he is, and that he's probably in som e kind of state of shock after what he just did (shooting someone taking a shit isn't exactly heroic if any killing could ever be), but it hasn't sunk in yet. That short "Yeah", it hurts to listen to it...
You get some people it's like flicking a switch: you see the world drop away behind their eyes and then they're ready to do anything, don't think a thing of it when they come back to themselves. Others build up to it with anger or something else and they feel it more. Then you get those people that never come back from it, just walk around always ready to kill, 'step away,' tends to be all you get by way of warning from them.

Another joke scene, just like the final scene where Hackman inexplicably takes 4 seconds to draw after the misfire.
Eastwood shooting a short-barreled shotgun from 40 yards away wouldn't blow a hole in a wooden door.

Dude, you apparently have a problem with depth perception.
There's no way in the world Eastwood was only 30 feet from the doorway. Look at the size of the man in the doorway compared to the size of Eastwood in the camera shot. Camera's probably 10-15 feet behind Eastwood.
30 feet is 10 yards. Imagine you're standing on a football field 10 yards away from another person. Do you REALLY think the guy 10 yards away from you would look as small to you as the guy in the doorway?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
he is an ass, but this movie is a heck of a lot more than entertainment. If you watch this movie just for the fight scenes and the killer lines, then you must enjoy violence on an unhealthy level.
What are you talking about? The whole purpose of movies is entertainment, and no I do not just like the fight scenes, I enjoy the entire movie, particularly the inner struggle Eastwood has with coming to the grips with the fact that he is good at killing. It saddens me that you can not enjoy a movie for what it is, good luck to you.
Oh, I certainly enjoy the movie, but I also enjoy cinema as an art form. This film is a masterpiece on many levels, and while it has great lines and action, they are all to the purpose of making you think. I can enjoy Die Hard and Dirty Harry as great entertainment, but this film is disturbing and horrific on a level that I think puts it beyond the line of simple "entertainment." It's a movie that's easy to love but hard to enjoy.
In response to a comment made before: John Wayne had his particular style, and it was a great persona. Those who dismiss the Duke as "one dimensional" do not understand the essence of his movie persona. To understand it, watch John Wayne AFTER he dresses down a subordinate, or dispatches someone, etc. His reaction is crafted as a response to whether he had regret or enthusiasm for what he just did. Usually, it's regret.
I don't know who played "The Kid" in this movie, but he was outstanding. He really deserved more credit. He's the fragile inocent in the entire film. He really acted his ass off. He should have gotten nominated for best supporting actor.
Josy Whales is a great movie, but Unforgiven is much better- more realistic- much stronger human element when dealing with murdering other people- showed Eastwood's growth as an actor/filmmaker -- Whales had one great performance- Unforgiven had several- the John 'the duck' wayne does not compare to the mighty clint
john wayne was a macho bitch. no personality, no depth, just a big cocky asshole with a gun. He will always be just an actor pretending to be a tough guy.
THANK YOU!!!! I'm so glad to hear someone who has the balls to put the mighty John Wayne in his place. Sure, he starred in some entertaining films, but as an actor he was fairly one dimensional. Everyone wants to talk about him as if he's the "man's man", the epitome of the tough guy, blah blah blah, but lest we forget, he's a fucking ACTOR. You can say that about the characters he plays, not the man himself. You've seen one John Wayne character, you've seen them all.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Your right about that, not the Duke but this scene; Josey Wales is a superior movie to Unforgiven in my opinion and if people would watch it again they will see that there are scenes and dialogue used from it in Unforgiven.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time, but they should have made it more realistic how they I.D.ed Quick Mike and Davey Boy-all they had was the two cartoon drawings!
Also, I don't think The Kid would have been shooting that shotgun one handed a second time! It probably would have knocked him off his horse.
This movie is pure gold. Definately the best anti-western ever made (and one of the best movies period. Took out all the glory of those shoot-em-up cowboy movies.
Jaimz Woolvett as "The Schofield Kid" = very underrated. Ask Clint what he thought of him!

he is an ass, but this movie is a heck of a lot more than entertainment.

As one who grew up on John Wayne, I could not have said it better.

Outstanding work from Eastwood. And, the actor playing "The Scholfield Kid" was top notch. Never seen him in any other flick.

I don't know who played "The Kid" in this movie, but he was outstanding. He really deserved more credit. He's the fragile inocent in the entire film. He really acted his ass off. He should have gotten nominated for best supporting actor.

He was about the only one that didn't get nominated!!!
He was really terrific, but really they all were. That's what's great about healthy competition, Nobody wanted to be out-acted!

This scene sums up this whole movie basically.
One of my favorite scenes from what I consider one of the greatest westerns ever made.

Your right about that, not the Duke but this scene; Josey Wales is a superior movie to Unforgiven in my opinion and if people would watch it again they will see that there are scenes and dialogue used from it in Unforgiven.

great scene, towards the end. I'll always remember it:
"I guess they had it coming"
"we all have it coming kid"

This is a very good movie about an old merciless killer. It's the weaving in the words that makes it wonderful and interesting for me.
This movie uses some good phrases and ideas that I've never heard anywhere else.

Clint was with out a doubt the best cowboy ever. John Wayne a close second.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, but they should have made it more realistic how they I.D.ed Quick Mike and Davey Boy-all they had was the two cartoon drawings!
Also, I don't think The Kid would have been shooting that shotgun one handed a second time! It probably would have knocked him off his horse.

love this scene, this is definitely one of the best movies ever.

This movie is pure gold. Definately the best anti-western ever made (and one of the best movies period. Took out all the glory of those shoot-em-up cowboy movies.
