All you have to do is download the fire clip from detonationfilms, import it into Vegas, then chroma key the black background and move the fire around using the track motion tool.

Dont chroma key it out. Go to compositing mode on the clip and select screen. works better.

after effects is more special effects. Sony Vegas is editing, that was just stock footage of fire, composited in. After Effects is your best bet for special effects.

It depends on what kind of work you want to do. Vegas is good for simple effects and is easier to use, but After Effects is better for really cool special effects like lightsabers and stuff like that.

I recommend getting a video converter then. There are a bunch of free ones, just google search "free video converter"

The way to get the file into Vegas is to go "file"-"import"-"media" and then select the file from wherever you saved it. If it says an error occurred, make sure that your computer has the ability to run that type of file. This same thing happened to me once, and I fixed it by using "mirror download" instead of the regular download. Hope this helps!
