i just started first week of outboard inboard marine mechanics and my dad has the same engine on his boat...2 problems...1 its got a blown up gear case, and the rebuilt one is in the shop waiting...with a bill...2... my dads a straight up 24 beer a day drunk, and he will NEVER pay the bill and get the part because it is about one weeks worth of alchohol survival to him...lol im contemplating to just steal it and light his boat on fire... any suggestions?
why does yours have a modern BIA bolt hole pattern bracket? Mine has the clamps on it, and I bought a jack plate for it, but the clamps are in the way.
@crazyfingerz27 The boat will do 45-52 mph depending on which lake it is on and how many RPMs the motor can reach that day. It averages 5200 RPMs max however it has gone up to 6000 RPM. GPS speed that day was 50 mph.
heyy i have the same motor and i don't know anything about it. where is the serial number located on this motor and can i have yours for refrence that would help me out alot thanks...
I just finished installing a 1968 Thunderbolt 1000 on my 1992 19 ft forester pontoon boat and will be testing it out on lesser slave lake, alberta, canada this wkd!!!
had a few merc straight sixes.. the fu----- #3 cylinder always failed, they say #3 had more advanced timing for a smoother idle, another foolish quick fix.
thnks for sharing vid 'must be last year of red bands . these six in line can sometimes suffer fuel starvation when trimmed up in shallow water ,but not a big problem
I had that exact same engine and it lasted all of about 45 seconds. That's how long it takes to blow one up when the water pump isn't working. Happend very first time on the water. Three cylinders had about 30 psi compression and the block was cracked :(
nice sidewinder, have a copy of it a 1967 tahiti with a 1971 merc 800 on it .not sure if its the right year since the sidewinder came out in 68 i think . can anyone verify this
It was owned by a kid on Winnipesaukee NH. The kid lived in Burlington Ma. and his dad made him sell the boat because he thought it was dangerous. If your boat had the tripod which was homemade it was probably yours.
@REDneckCLOWN A 250 on a bass boat with everything done to give it speed might go 90 mph. A 115 mercury on a 16' aluminum boat might go 50, so how could a 115 go so much faster? I mean that propr can only turn up so much and only propel that motor so fast even if it's on a 2x4. But it can't go 98mph. Because it just can't turn up that much. Maybe if it turned up 8,000. So maybe that's what you're talking about a racing motor. Then different story.
Nice running engine, but I've heard some bad things about those tower of powers... a lot of them blew up in the top cylinder because not enough oil would get up there. My grandpa purchased his first large boat in 1974 and was asked if he wanted a Mercury or Evinrude 135. He asked which was better and they said the Mercury is faster, but the Evinrudes are more dependable and lasts longer.. He chose the Evinrude 135 Silver Starfile and ran it for 26 years... Evinrude/Johnson ruled in those days!!
lmao do you know anything about outboards? that straight six has a greater power to weight ratio than any two stroke or four stroke on the market today. i would stack a old Merc Tower against an Etec or Verado of the same hp any day
my dad had a 90 horse just like this one on a 15ft hydra sport bass boat and it ran about 55 mph, an a 115 horse on tat boat and ran 63 mph. these were good motors back then.
Their still good motors now. We raced a new Jet Ski with 6 extra gallons of gas, a ski, wake board, four people in the boat, and an anchor and the Jet ski barely had us.
yamahas 350is not really 350 hp we tested it in our shop and was no where near 350 on a dyno suzukies300 and the verado300 are far better motors and weigh about 200pounds less but nothing copares to a 2 stroke
man i have this exact same engine... i just took it out on the lake today and for some reason at open throttle it is going really slow compared to the old 85 evinrude v4..... please help ... idk if it needs some throttle adjustments or the timeing is off... some advice?..... thanks man..
The older ones have a much greater power to weight ratio. My '82 Mercury 80 has much more power than the newer ones, because its a inline-4. Newer ones only have three cylinders and they are much heavier.
Nice engine, a pair would look lovely, But yamaha are the rolls royce nowadays!! No doubt about it. The've just built world's first 350 hp 5.3ltr v8 outboard. Nice merc though.....

The old Mercs are the best. Low, flat wake, perfect for skiing. Wish I had one.

back in the 70s we had one on a 18 ft mark twain . We were always Johnson
Evenrude folk .But It was a very hard to start engine .Once it got hot it was hot.
I think it was just a fluke we probably could have gotten the cold start bug fixed.
Really a cool power plant .As always I was just a kid I could not appreciate it .
like I do now.
