It probably was the pilot that was pitched to the network. Go back and check the early episodes of The Simpsons, even Family Guy, voices and drawings change.

Pilot episodes that are pitches are often crumily drawn to save money. The networks knows the animation will improve, they just need to see/hear what the show will be like.
