People, i know this is great and all that but the first serve receive caught the top of the net making the ball go slower then he pushes it right after the bounces, thats why it got so much backspin in it, so playing a ball right after the bounce + hitting the net makes it come back even faster. Stop putting things in your head like this is amazing and all that, its just practice. Anyone who plays on a higher level then the average player can do this. Its the basics of returning a serve...

I read in Cheng Yinghua's article once that Chinese aim to use the spin in the serve while returning while convetionally all players return with the aim to neutralize the spin,

here it seems Ma is using the backspin in the ball in his push to create more backspin.

According to Cheng he believes that outside China only Waldner has the capability to return serves like that.

this is just a simple push! he didn't add any extra spin, he just reversed it. Also, the ball hits the net which took most of the speed off the ball. That explains why it stayed on the table.

@decoyla its really just right off the bounce, thats the only "easy" way you can play a short ball. The other way to play a ball short is by feeling and try to play it short, doesnt matter if you didnt get it right after the bounce but you really need a good touch to do this and mostly it will go to high. So to play a good short serve return you have to get it off the bounce. But i think its hard because if the oponent serves fast and long you already stepped in and you cant loop the ball.
