In the Bay Area, country music is played only on country stations, there is no crossover. I think what is happening to countrying going 'mainstream' is that they have to start to reach out to a wider audience and it isn't going to happen with the "old country" sound.

No genre of music ever sounds like the generation before ... look a rap ... does Lil Wayne sound anything like Biggie and Tupac?? No ... but that's not to say it's a good or bad thing .. if you're looking at country, look at the difference between Hank Willaims, Hank Jr, and Hank III ... it's still country. Music changes with the times...

I must say I like any music with strong melody. I'll admit though I prefer the kind of country music that doesn't really sound "country." haha When the twang is so strong, it sort of turns me off. I like the mainstream pop-country like Lady Antebellum. Plus, in the end, Lady A really can sing.

@lovingromance: New country has to become pop to sell more units. I don't remember country ever being played on pop radio stations. Now they are everywhere. When did a member of a country outfit ever frost their hair like the clown in Rascal Flatts. Music is all relative, since about five corporate entities run all of music.

I have to disagree with you. Garth Brooks was played on pop stations, as well as Dolly Parton. Elvis was on of the first, he started out country, but he and his songs became so popular they became mainstream hits. I believe all music is universal if you have an open mind.

I have to disagree with you. Maybe in Nashville they make it to pop radio, but not in Chicago or Minneapolis. All through the late 80s and all of the 90s they were not heard on either markets. The music markets are now saturated with bubble gum country acts--or idol contestants--or fallen acts like Hootie and Bon Jovi. As long as major labels can max profits, they will conglomerate any acts from any genre.
